The man stood up from the rock, raising his eyes to lock onto Modret and Axel the moment Modret called Axel's name.
"Wh—at? Hu—mans?" His voice was disjointed, as though he couldn't form coherent words. However, Modret, just a few meters away and with many hearing-enhancement abilities, was able to hear him clearly.
The man waved his two hands, gesturing for them to come to his location…
Many thoughts swirled in Modret's mind, filled with hesitation…
What if the man was a unique mutation involving celestials?
He could still recall Troy's case…
Perhaps the man was the boss of this celestial gate?
Modret's heart was unsettled. However, through the corner of his eyes, he noticed a figure speeding through the darkness, lightning flickering around him.
'Axel…' Modret whispered internally, glancing at Axel.
It took only a minute before Axel landed onto the ground with a loud crash…
The man stared at Axel for a moment before shifting his gaze to Modret and gesturing for him to come…
'System, activate shadow sense…'
Modret whispered internally. At the same time, he surrounded his body with null fire and lightning.
All sorts of defense abilities surrounded him as he took over Axel's five senses…
Immediately, an old man came into view.
The moment Modret took over Axel's body, the man's gaze sharpened.
He looked at Modret's main body, then at Axel.
"I… is… a… hu–man. No… need… fear…" His disjointed voice seemed to be conveying to Modret that there was no need for him to be so cautious.
Modret took the time to glance around, his gaze sweeping through the surroundings.
He noticed there were a few celestial body parts which the old man had used to carve pots and other miscellaneous tools.
There were also engravings on this part of the wall as well, and aside from that, there was nothing noteworthy.
Modret shifted his gaze to the old man.
He was clad in fur, and his body was riddled with scars, on his chest, legs, and other parts.
His face looked weary with dark circles under his eyes, and his hair was completely grey.
He looked completely harmless and defenseless.
But then, how had such an old man stayed in an S-rank celestial gate without dying, for who knew how long?
"No… need fear… body falls." the man muttered, pointing to Modret's main body.
'He also senses the moment I took over Axel's body.' Modret's heart was filled with alarm.
Nonetheless, he couldn't deny the fact that the old man was right.
He glanced around once more, his eyes lingering on the old man for longer before his consciousness returned back to his body.
Then, Modret glanced around, noticing the celestials that were trying to claw their way at him.
A burst of lightning and null fire erupted like a fountain of liquid from him, completely incinerating them.
Then, a sleek long black thread latched itself onto the wall a few meters away.
Modret grabbed onto the sleek shadow thread, using his Shadow Puppet ability.
'What the hell?'
Just before Modret used the shadow puppet strings to pull himself up, he noticed that there was nothing beneath the chunk of wall.
In essence, the wall was floating freely in this S-rank celestial gate.
After noticing this, the alarm and cautiousness in Modret's heart grew exponentially.
Finally, the shadow puppet string dragged him forcefully like a Spider-Man, throwing him onto the smooth stone surface.
Modret crashed onto the ground casually, then straightened himself up.
Standing beside Axel, he glanced at the man, his expression filled with puzzlement.
"Hu–mans, actually… alive." the old man murmured, his voice laced with surprise.
"What do you mean, 'humans still alive'?" Modret raised a brow, his face filled with questions.
"This—" the man pointed outwards towards the abyss, then continued.
"Endless abyss. Keep–falling—forever… Die after some time."
Modret's heart shook.
"You mean this S-rank celestial gate is called the Endless Abyss, and if we hadn't encountered you, we would have kept falling forever before dying after some time?"
The old man nodded.
"During era…" he pointed at himself, "humans… wiped out."
"During your era, humans were wiped out?" Modret was curious.
The old man did not nod or answer Modret, shifting his attention away from the Endless Abyss, and turning his gaze to move towards the flickering fire.
He sat down, and Modret couldn't help but have black lines running through his face.
The old man began rambling incoherent words, which even Modret with his enhanced hearing couldn't make sense of.
Modret frowned briefly.
"Young master, do you think he is telling the truth?"
"We can't be certain of anything yet. But he might be right about the description of this celestial gate."
"An S-rank celestial gate is already so terrifying, then what if there exist SS or even SSS-rank celestial gates? Is that one created to make one feel despair? Can it even be cleared?"
Modret could tell that Axel was filled with terror towards this celestial gate.
"Don't worry about it much, we will definitely clear this celestial gate."
Axel nodded.
He looked for a rock nearby and sat down.
Meanwhile, Modret moved to the edge of the floating stone…
'SSS-rank celestial gate, huh?' he whispered internally.
The abyss looked particularly endless, and below him, it was as if the darkness wanted to swallow him whole.
Modret chuckled at the thought.
'Swallow me whole? You're just an S-rank dungeon. My journey is just beginning, and not even gods can stop me from exploring the vast starry skies…'
After resolving his heart internally, Modret found a place to sit down nearby and begin recovering his mana.
In the fight previously, he had exhausted a lot of his mana reserves, especially when he activated all his defensive moves simultaneously.
Blue mana swirled in the surroundings and slowly entered into Modret's body, gradually filling up his cracked core.
'Thankfully, mana still exists here.' Modret felt his heart relax at the thought. If mana wasn't here, he didn't know what he would have done.
The entire place fell silent, and only the occasional screeches of different creatures in the distance faintly echoed into their ears.
Finally, just as he had been engrossed in cultivation for a few hours, Modret heard the old man speak once more.
"Me—can–lead you." He pointed up at the endless darkness.
"Bloodline—leave abyss…"
"What?" Modret raised his brows, intrigued. If his guess wasn't wrong, then…
His mind trailed off.
