My unbelievable life with CATS (Con and Thief system)

Chapter 45: Amy's risky visit

A moment later, Dylan left again because he had to work at the bookstore. After walking and occasionally teleporting into an alley to avoid being late, he saw two men in suits talking to the owner of the small bookstore that sold new and used books, where he worked.

He noticed a sedan parked in front of the shop. Then he paid attention to the two men in suits, who had fierce, manly faces and neck tattoos that disappeared under their collars, like mafia members.

He saw the bookstore owner, a man in his 50s, fat, wearing glasses, and dressed in work clothes, arguing strenuously with the two men. Dylan slowly approached.

"I told you, I can't keep track of every customer who comes in. How would I know if your little princess came here?" the owner yelled.

"No need to get worked up, sir. We're just asking because many people saw the princess coming here often, almost every day. If you haven't seen her, that's fine," replied one of the suited men, who was starting to look annoyed.

"Um... what's going on, Mr. Sebastian?" Dylan asked.

"Huh... Dylan, get inside. You're late for work," Sebastian yelled angrily.

"Yeah, yeah... I went home first to change clothes. Sorry," Dylan replied, stepping inside.

Suddenly, Dylan's shoulder was grabbed by one of the two men in suits. Dylan turned to see the man, who was wearing glasses, had slicked-back hair, and looked smart but fierce with a neck tattoo. He was wearing a black suit with white pinstripes and a black tie.

"You work here? Have you ever seen this person?" the man immediately asked, showing a photo on his smartphone screen.

Dylan was a little startled but tried to keep his expression neutral. The photo on the smartphone screen was of Amy, still wearing a middle school uniform, and her hair was long, though the same blonde color as now.

"Um... I don't think so, sir," Dylan replied casually.

"See! Even my employee hasn't seen her. Get out of here and stop bothering my shop," Sebastian added.

"Alright then. Sorry for the trouble. Excuse us," replied the man in the pinstripe suit.

The two men immediately turned, walked toward their car, and got inside. Not long after speaking in the car, they simply drove off, leaving Sebastian and Dylan standing in front of the shop.

"What was that all about, Mr. Sebas?" Dylan asked.

"They're looking for their 'princess.' They said the new chairman selection is coming up soon, and the princess's parents sent them to find the princess who ran away from home," Sebastian answered.

"Hmm... is that so," Dylan replied.

"They said the princess was often seen coming to our shop, but I don't know, and if you, who are usually at the front, don't know, then they're wrong. Now... hurry up and get inside and change, or I'll dock your pay," Sebastian said.

"Yeah, yeah... calm down, you cheapskate," Dylan replied softly, turning and walking inside.

"What did you say?" Sebastian asked, annoyed.

"Nothing, sir," Dylan answered, walking inside.

In the locker room, Dylan kept thinking while changing into his bookstore uniform.

"The chairman selection is close, huh... Judging from Amy and Clara's story yesterday, the potential leader is likely the head of that branch family, and that's why Amy was to be married to him. Is that right, CATS?" Dylan said in his head.

[That's about right, sir.]

"Well, as long as they don't know where Amy is, it's fine, right?" Dylan replied.

[That's correct, sir. Besides, Amy never takes off the brooch I gave her. I can track where she is and where she goes... so you don't need to worry. Nothing will happen to her.]

"I hope so. She's pregnant, and I don't want anything to disturb her pregnancy or harm my child. That's why I'm taking care of each of their issues, not just Amy's," Dylan said.

[I understand, sir.]

Suddenly, the locker door opened. Sebastian poked his head in and saw Dylan, who had just finished changing his clothes.

"Hey, someone is looking for you," Sebastian said.

"Oh... okay, sir, I'm coming out," Dylan replied casually, closing his locker door.

Dylan stepped out of the locker room, and his eyes immediately widened when he saw Amy looking through a pile of new light novels on the shelf. Dylan immediately came out from behind the counter and approached Amy.

"Amy, what are you doing here?" Dylan asked.

"Looking at books and looking for you to give you this. It was left at home," Amy answered, handing Dylan his smartphone.

"Huh... but why did you go to all this trouble to come here?" Dylan asked again, holding Amy by both shoulders.

"Um... Ellie and Maya are still tired, and Lena isn't allowed to leave. If you don't have your smartphone, how can we contact you? So I was chosen to deliver your smartphone... and because I wanted to browse for books anyway... I want to buy a few to read at home," Amy replied casually, with an expressionless face.

Sebastian walked up behind Dylan and examined Amy's face, who happened to greet Sebastian.

"Hey, aren't you the girl those two men were looking for?" Sebastian asked. Then he turned to look at Dylan. "You know her? You said you didn't know her! They aren't good people. If anything happens to my shop, you'll be responsible," Sebastian told Dylan.

"Huh? What people? What's he talking about, babe?" Amy asked, confused.

"Sorry, Mr. Sebas, I'll be right back," Dylan said, turning to look at Sebastian. Then he immediately turned and pulled Amy out of the shop, taking her to the alley between the building and its neighbor.

"What is it, babe?" Amy asked, confused.

"People from your family are looking for you. They said the chairman selection is close. They're likely your parents' hired men," Dylan answered.

Amy's face immediately changed. She quickly stepped forward and held Dylan's hand with her trembling hand. Her face looked terrified.

"We have to get out of here and go home before they come back or before my cheapskate boss calls those guys to save his shop. Come on," Dylan replied.

"But you're working," Amy replied, scared.

"Okay, wait a second," Dylan replied, releasing Amy's hand.

Then Dylan stood straight, crossing his arms over his chest and holding both shoulders crisscrossed. Suddenly, Dylan's body split, and Dylan became two people, startling Amy half to death and making her sway slightly as if she were about to faint. But Dylan immediately caught Amy, then turned to look at his body double.

"CATS, please go inside and work normally," Dylan said.

[Yes, sir.]

"Good, thank you, CATS," Dylan replied.

"Um... babe... what was that, exactly..."

"Keep this a secret from the others. Don't tell them I can split my body," Dylan said, cutting off Amy's words.

"O-okay, babe," Amy replied, who was shocked but also happy because she was holding Dylan's secret.

Then Dylan grabbed Amy's hand and ran out the back end of the alley, while his double, controlled by CATS, walked out of the alley and into the shop to work.
