Werewolf Leveling: Building the Strongest Pack in the Apocalypse

Chapter 216: A Curse

Looking at the queen begging for her people's freedom, I felt a mixture of emotions. One of which was a hint of admiration.

She put away her pride and her status as queen to bow to me. She wanted freedom but didn't have the strength to grasp it for herself, so she was doing the thing required, bowing to someone who could give her the freedom she wanted.

Personally, I would never make such a decision, but it was still admirable in its own way.

I approached the weeping harpy and helped her to her feet. My hand seemed to sink into her soft skin when I touched her.

Her face was flushed from all her crying.

"You are a good queen," I said as I wiped the silver tears from her eyes. "You are correct. This city is a bird cage, and I will free you from it. All I ask in return is your loyalty. I want you all to join my pack."

She nodded her head eagerly.

"Yes, we are all prepared. Everyone of us. We will gladly join your pack; it is our honor."

All the harpies surrounding us nodded their heads in agreement. The queen was the first one to offer herself to be turned, so with everyone watching, I did the honors.

She didn't have a hint of fear in her eyes, only joy from being able to find the person who would grant her the freedom she so desired.

I bit into her neck and pumped my venom into her bloodstream, rewriting her very being in the process. She released a moan and flung her head back as she allowed my venom to take hold of her.

Her eyes flashed orange, and her lips curved upwards into a smile.

Without wasting any second, more harpies rushed forward to be turned. They flooded into the building, overcrowding the place.

I turned them all, and soon a huge celebration ensued.

Queen Selice's eyes glowed with joy, and for a moment they were all just joyful, but the joy was soon burnt to ashes when the queen suddenly collapsed to the ground.

The thud from her fall caused silence to wash over the room until a sudden panic broke out.

"My queen! What is happening?" the rest of the harpies tried to rush to their queen, but before they even got to her, they too collapsed to the ground.

I watched the scene with my eyes opened wide, wondering what was happening.

Suddenly, the queen and all the harpies began vomiting strange black liquids. It flowed from their eyes and ears as they curled up on the ground in agony.

Their screams grew more twisted by the second.

'Could my venom be incompatible?!' I wondered. This has never happened before.

"Alpha, help us!"

"Spare us your mercy!"

They begged and cried for my help, but I was at a loss for what to do.

"Harpies, now I remember. Those are the spirits that were cursed by that arrogant angel. What was his name again…."

I snapped my head in the direction of Khalissi the moment I heard her speak.

Did she just say angel?

"I can't seem to remember his name, but he and Abaddon had quite the scuffle back in the day."

I stared at her, feeling puzzled by everything going on.

Is she messing with me?

"What are you talking about?"

She shrugged.

"I can't remember. It all happened a few thousand years ago. We demons don't memorize events like humans and the rest of you do."

"You said something about an angel," I quickly said, trying to cut through her nonsense.

Her pink lips perched into a smile.

"Yes, the one that killed that dragon. Well, that's at least what I think. There are no creatures here powerful enough to face it. Your world used to be fiercely guarded by angels. Why did you think we demons stayed away for so long? There was one angel that was especially arrogant. He placed a curse on the wind spirits of this world, turning them into hideous bird women."

So that's what happened. I thought that the Djinn was the one that killed the dragon we saw, but it turns out I was wrong. It was the work of an angel.

I desperately wanted to learn more about this history Khalissi spoke of, but the horrifying screams and the suffering of the harpies in front of me was my main priority.

I rushed over to the queen, trying to see if I could help in some way, but just then.

[Race evolutions complete. The curse has been evolved. Your harpies have now evolved into Valkyries!]

Once all the black liquid had been dispersed from their bodies, the harpies began to change shape. Their bodies glowed like molten lava.

It looked as if their skins were melting off their bodies as their limbs began reconstructing. This lasted for only a few minutes before they had changed form completely.

They were no longer the hideous bird monsters; instead, they appeared like beautiful maidens with black wings on their backs.

Compared to how they looked before, they now looked like goddesses. Their beauty surpassed most supermodels.

If it wasn't for their black wings, I would've thought they were angels. The most beautiful among them was, of course, their queen.

The black wings on her back obscured her delicate features. Her once tall figure was now slender, her waist slim and her hips wide.

Silky black hair cascaded down her shoulders. It looked and felt as if it was holding an endless darkness within every strand.

Her eyes were that of a newborn, like a bird just hatching from its egg. For a moment, I was captivated. The two of us stared at each other before her thin lips parted to speak.

"Alpha, you cured us. You lifted our curse?"

She finally pulled her gaze away from me. Her eyes swept over the room, looking at the other harpies, no, Valkyries, in the room with us.

I smiled and offered her a hand. She gracefully took it, and I pulled her to her feet. I then offered her my shirt to help cover herself.

The shoulder area of the shirt made it seem a bit too big for her, but the chest area was under a fair bit of pressure.

Now that her evolution was over, it was time I got some answers.
