Hidden Moth

Chapter 66: To Exist Is to Be Perceived

The second day, He Kao once again slept until noon. The quality of sleep for young people is just great.

He slept too late last night and played too hard, nearly exhausting his divine qi. If it were an ordinary person, they might be so exhausted they'd go straight to the hospital.

The big bedroom he slept in, located in the southwest corner, was originally occupied by his grandfather. It comes with an en-suite bathroom, just like a standard hotel room. Initially, he intended for Gao Xue'e to stay here, but Gao Xue'e insisted on staying in the small bedroom He Kao usually slept in.

After washing up and getting dressed, He Kao opened the door and came out, just in time to see Gao Xue'e setting the table. He wondered, "Did you go out and buy... breakfast?"

Gao Xue'e said a bit shyly, "I also got up quite late. Seeing you were still asleep, I went to the old street in town to buy something to eat. There are quite a few shops over there."

He Kao got up when it was almost twelve, and Gao Xue'e didn't get up early either, about half-past ten. It was supposed to be time for lunch, but she brought back breakfast items.

Small wonton soup, freshly fried big doughsticks, and this side's town specialty—mung bean paste-filled glutinous rice cakes. She also made two cups of Chonghe Drink, just one cup each.

He Kao: "Is this how you went out?"

Gao Xue'e: "I wore a hat and a mask, no one could recognize me. Besides, no one here knows me."

He Kao: "Dressed like this, you clearly look like a high-paid white-collar worker heading to an office building. On the old street in town, I bet anyone would take a second look."

Gao Xue'e rolled her eyes at him, "Didn't you pick these clothes for me?"

He Kao slapped his forehead, indeed, he'd given Gao Xue'e the outerwear he'd seen her wear to work regularly.

Gao Xue'e smiled and asked, "Do you think I'm too noticeable? If I want to stroll through the local farmers' market or something, do you have suitable clothes for me to change into... or another checkered shirt?"

"Thinking that programmers only wear checkered shirts is a stereotype. I do have some casual wear suitable for you to wear to the market, it's in that room. Didn't you see it?"

As he spoke, he walked into the room where Gao Xue'e slept and found a set of clothes from the wardrobe. Gao Xue'e took it and looked at it, laughing heartily, "When did you wear these clothes?"

He Kao: "This is the school uniform I got when I first entered high school. You can just judge if it fits or not."

Gao Xue'e: "So new, did you not wear it?"

He Kao: "Didn't wear it much, there's a story behind it too."

Gao Xue'e: "Let's eat first, sit down and talk slowly. I love hearing stories."

Is that so? He Kao remembered Gao Xue'e often scolding her subordinates with the phrase "Don't tell me stories, talk practical stuff!" Now she claims to love listening to stories. Ah, fickle woman...

He Kao is about six feet tall, while Gao Xue'e's bare height should be around five foot five, and with heels, she exceeds five foot seven.

When He Kao first entered high school, he stood about her current height. The so-called school uniform was essentially wholesale athletic wear, without even a school logo, typical of how rural places cut corners.

Even though it was given by the school, parents still had to pay for the uniforms. He Kao took good care of his stuff, always washing it clean. He already knew how to use the washing machine at home.

Each school year, the school would "issue" a new set of uniforms, requiring students to wear them on Monday morning flag-raising ceremonies. When he was in sophomore year, the freshman uniform, though a bit worn, was still kept well, so he wore it as daily attire.

He was growing fast then, wearing it was already getting small.

It seems like every class in middle school has a few bad kids, learned from somewhere else, bullying others, someone targeted He Kao.

Some bad kid mocked him for wearing small clothes, and even tore it on purpose during gym class.

As a result, He Kao didn't complain at home or report to the teacher, but after school, he intercepted the kid several times, bombarding him with mud balls and dung pellets, each time leaving the kid dirty and smelly.

At the time, Huang Xiaopang helped him by cooperating, like reporting news, keeping watch, supplying dung, and stuff.

He Kao didn't have other requests, just wanted the kid to compensate for the clothes. Actually, he had already gone easy since there wasn't much grudge.

Considering how the kid returned home, the parents must ask what happened. The kid claimed it was He Kao and Huang Si who did it, the parents weren't pleased upon hearing this and went to school to find the teacher, saying He Kao bullied their kid.

Clearly, there were two people, why didn't the parents tell on Huang Si? Because the main culprit was He Kao, Xiaopang was just an accomplice, possibly also because Huang Si's father was a policeman, a detention center director, a notable figure around the villages nearby.

Interestingly, the teacher didn't believe it at all!

In the eyes of the class teacher, He Kao had always been a well-behaved, obedient, good kid. More importantly, He Kao's grades were always among the top in his year, while the bad kid's were among the bottom of the class.

The class teacher called the bad kid over to ask, on what basis do you say that classmate He Kao bullied you? The bad kid slipped up, had to admit he tore He Kao's clothes himself... then the teacher asked his parents for compensation.

In such rural places, everyone knows each other more or less. Upon hearing this, He Kao's uncle said let's drop it, it's just a set of clothes, no need to compensate! He asked the big aunt to buy He Kao a new set of clothes, consisting of jeans and a checkered shirt.

The big aunt thought differently, after buying the clothes, she even went to the village entrance to scold everyone.

Mrs. Chen also gave He Kao a set of clothes, saying Xiaopang recently got fatter, couldn't fit into the original clothes anymore, but He Kao felt it looked newly bought.
