Starting With a Reef [Global Survival]

chapter 105 - The Ninth Day of Summer 02

While they rested, the two carefully examined the supplies they had collected from the giant metal tree.[Coolant: High-grade material. Regulates body temperature, protects equipment. Can be used to make cooling devices and repair mechanical cores. Must be stored in high-temperature-resistant glass.][Superconductive Cable: Can be used to construct electric grids, power devices, or fabricate generators. Essential material for lightning rods.]They each received 10 liters of coolant, and two strands of superconductive cable.Although they knew coolant could be used to craft many high-grade devices, without the blueprints or formulas, it could only be used for temperature control for now.Lin Zhu had someone forge two Obsidian Pickaxes and one Insulated Cutter. He happened to know someone in the Association had obtained a blueprint for the Insulated Cutter, and now that he had the superconductive cable, he wanted to get it made—just in case of electrical hazards. The underground cave most likely contained ore, so the Obsidian Pickaxes were clearly for mining. In addition to having Mu Zitang help forge several obsidian tools, Yun Luohe also sent some coolant to Si Qi, urging her to study it quickly and make some cooling equipment to send over.Mechanical Island was getting hotter by the hour. Yun Luohe wasn’t sure how much longer she could hold out.Just now, she had rubbed some coolant on her clothes—and immediately felt an undeniable coolness wash over her body. Her clothes radiated a chill that made her feel refreshed all over.If applying it like that already had this effect, how powerful would a dedicated cooling device be?As they stepped into the cave, a wave of stifling heat rushed at them—it was like walking into a massive steamer. They followed the green-marked main passage. Inside the pitch-black cave, bulb-shaped white fruits grew all along the walls, lighting the path ahead.Yun Luohe tried to pick a few, but no matter what method she used, the moment she touched them, they dimmed and stopped glowing.Even when she held them in her hand, they transformed into useless stones. She had no choice but to give up.Before long, they reached the bottom of the cave.It was a vast, open space. All around were various metal boxes and machines—some still emitting faint buzzing noises, as though they were still operating. But upon closer inspection, it became clear these machines weren’t connected to anything.Yun Luohe activated [Scanning Eye], surveying the environment.“These boxes probably contain various supplies. As for the machines… can’t tell what they’re for. But they all look ancient, like relics from a long time ago.”Lin Zhu said, “Let’s open the boxes first.”The boxes were bolted to the ground—completely immovable. They could only be opened on-site.They tried opening them, but each one required a key.Keys weren’t exactly something they had much of.Yun Luohe had recently obtained one from the Mutual Aid Association—a key fragment she had synthesized into a full key using the [Trash Can].Lin Zhu, on the other hand, had two keys. But with this many boxes, one or two wouldn’t be nearly enough. They quickly contacted the Trade Center and chat channel, trying to exchange for more.Yun Luohe hadn’t brought much with her this time, so she could only use Obsidian to barter. She also asked Mu Zitang for help. She’d repay him with supplies once they got back.Mu Zitang was now managing the Heaven’s Secret Pavilion and the Mutual Aid Association. The Secret Pavilion had stockpiled an enormous amount of resources—stored with several upper-level members—and Mu Zitang managed a large portion of it.So he was still quite well-off.Yun Luohe managed to trade for one more key from the Trade Center.Lin Zhu headed to the Lucky Emperor Association to get one more.To avoid missing any messages, they both kept their ◈ Nоvеlіgһт ◈ (Continue reading) light screens open, watching the channel while opening boxes.Yun Luohe picked two boxes at random.Truthfully, she wasn’t confident in her luck. But then again, maybe the contents were fixed—not based on randomness like the shell-opening mechanic. She opened the first one—it wasn’t bad.Refined Copper Plate ×2, Insulated Fiber Gloves ×1, Electronic Components ×2, Copper Ore ×5.Refined Copper Plates could be used to make conductive elements or upgrade tool durability.Electronic Components could be used to craft household electric appliances. She glanced over at Lin Zhu—his box didn’t seem to contain much more.So she opened the next one. This one had less in terms of quantity—but all of it was high-quality.[Quantum Cooling Patch ×1, Self-Heating Sleeping Bag ×1, Graphene Insulation Blanket ×1][Quantum Cooling Patch: Made with nano thermoelectric materials. Attaches to pulse points. Continuously absorbs heat for 6 hours.][Self-Heating Sleeping Bag: Carbon fiber heating layer. Lasts 72 hours. Maintains constant 25°C.][Graphene Insulation Blanket: Made from specialized material. Can block -20°C wind, reflects 50% of body heat.]She counted the boxes. There were eighteen total. If all of them were filled with supplies like these, this haul would be huge. But after half an hour...Mu Zitang only managed to synthesize one more key and three more fragments.Yun Luohe let out a soft sigh. If she were at the Reef Base, she could’ve used the [Trash Can] to recycle and upgrade them into full keys.Still—two more was better than nothing.Lin Zhu hadn’t done much better. He had started with two keys and managed to get two more. Just like her, he could only open four boxes total.Yun Luohe opened two more in succession.[Cold Light Stick ×2, Refined Copper Plate ×1, Dry Ice Pack ×1, Fluorescent Paint ×2, Solar Shade Canopy ×1][Smoke Bomb ×2, Flashlight ×1, Ore Detector ×1, Survival Watch ×1, Multi-Function Toxic Gas Mask ×1]Several of these high-grade tools would prove very useful.[Solar Shade Canopy: Made of titanium alloy and photovoltaic film. Reflects 95% of UV rays. Shaded area is 15°C cooler than ambient temperature.][Survival Watch: Integrates radiation detection, compass, and body temperature monitoring.][Multi-Function Toxic Gas Mask: Filters toxic gases, dust, and radioactive microparticles. Filter lasts 30 hours before needing replacement.]No doubt about it—Mechanical Island’s supplies were excellent.High-grade and highly practical.Judging by the item descriptions, some of these weren’t just for summer. They’d likely come in handy during other disasters too. After all, Mechanical Island was a Four Seasons Island. If they had the chance, they definitely needed to come back.Just this one underground cave had yielded so many valuable items.Lin Zhu seemed to have had a good haul too—his expression said as much. After packing up everything, they checked the Trade Center one last time. But when they couldn’t get any more keys, they prepared to leave. The remaining boxes would have to wait for the next person who came here.Who knew when that might be?—Just then, Yun Luohe spotted a strange machine. Its surface was covered in odd symbols and patterns, and it emitted a low hum from within. She walked closer and found that the machine had a slot—it looked like something needed to be inserted to activate it.“Lin Zhu, come take a look at this,” Yun Luohe called him over.“What is this? Looks like it can be turned on.”“Yeah, but it needs some kind of plug-in. I can’t tell what.”They studied it for a while and tried various methods—but couldn’t get it to activate.“Forget it. It’s getting late. Let’s keep moving.”The temperature was still rising. If they didn’t have coolant, they wouldn’t have lasted this long. They passed through a long corridor and saw a medium-sized pool ahead. The entire pool was filled with coolant. The silver coolant rippled slightly, releasing a cold mist that contrasted sharply with the high-temperature surroundings. The two were thrilled. But their excitement didn’t last long.Because they discovered—they couldn’t get close to it at all.Electric currents buzzed around the pool, and the temperature was extremely low. Approaching it would get them frostbitten.Yun Luohe’s Survival Watch read the coolant pool at -40°C.No way to extract it directly—unless they had cold-resistant, high-grade equipment.Even Yúntūn’s spider silk froze up upon contact with the pool.Forget using anything else. After experimenting for a while, all they could do was sigh at the sight of the full pool.It was right there—but unreachable. Frustrating.Coolant was critical for surviving high temperatures—one of the most valuable summer survival materials."Let’s check further ahead—maybe there’s something else useful.”Suddenly, a violent tremor echoed from deep within the cave. The ground started shaking.Yun Luohe’s expression shifted—she sensed something dangerous ahead.Lin Zhu said grimly, “Something’s coming.”“It’s burrowing up from underground.” Yun Luohe quickly drew her weapon, bracing for combat. As the tremors intensified, the floor quaked—until a massive silver mechanical creature emerged from the cave depths. Its body was made from an assortment of metal components. It looked like a colossal spider, with eight thick mechanical legs supporting its massive frame. Its eyes glowed a vivid red.Roubao glanced at Yúntūn and muttered, “Meow! This guy looks kinda like you.”Yúntūn hissed, “Tssst! No, it doesn’t!”The moment the mechanical spider saw Yúntūn, its gaze locked on.“What is that?” Lin Zhu asked, his tone tense.Yun Luohe shook her head. “Probably one of Mechanical Island’s native mechanical monsters. In any case—it’s dangerous. Be careful.”The mechanical spider scanned them with its red eyes. Its directive toward intruders was clear: eliminate.Even though it detected a familiar energy in Yúntūn, it still charged toward them at alarming speed.Yun Luohe dodged to the side and immediately ordered Yúntūn and Roubao to attack.Yúntūn fired silk to bind the spider’s legs, but its shell was far too hard—the silk couldn’t damage it at all.Roubao leapt forward, slashing at its eyes with sharp claws—but the mechanical spider reacted swiftly, evading with ease. Its entire body was forged from steel. Roubao’s strength might be considerable, but against a mechanical body, it wasn’t doing much damage.Lin Zhu called in his Flamingo. It spread its wings and swooped at the spider, jabbing at it with its beak. The mechanical spider swatted it aside with one leg. The Flamingo crashed to the ground, hard.Though the bird was tough and uninjured, it was furious. Its feathers were now covered in grime—it looked downright disheveled.“Chirp!!!”It flapped its wings and aimed a fireball directly at the mechanical spider.
