Rotting Land: Survive

Chapter 165: One Arrow Two Hawks

Even though it was just a fleeting glimpse, the flickering black shadow on the opposite side sent a chill down Hu Xiaodong's spine.

Zombies! There are zombies on the rooftop across! It's likely that those zombies are the staff from the epidemic prevention station.

Fortunately, the sheets and clothes that were hung out to dry on the rooftop offered some cover; otherwise, the situation on the opposite side could have turned chaotic due to my appearance.

Without thinking further, Hu Xiaodong quickly withdrew his head and leaped down from the wooden ladder. As his feet hit the ground, Wu Chao, who was waiting on the side, hurriedly approached with concern, asking, "Hu, how is it? Can we make it across?"

Frowning and shaking his head, Hu Xiaodong felt a bit dejected, "There's no issue with the distance, but there are zombies on the rooftop across."

"Ah! There are zombies?!" Wu Chao was equally astonished and at a loss, "Then, then what should we do now?!"

What to do? For a moment, Hu Xiaodong couldn't think of a solution. He instinctively wanted to find that slightly frail figure in front of him, but the result was…

"Creak, creak," In a moment of distraction, Dazhuang had somehow gotten onto the wooden ladder and was climbing up on his own. This truly gave Hu Xiaodong a big scare!

You should know that Dazhuang's emotions were extremely unstable at the time, and no one knew what impulsive actions he might take under extreme conditions!

Startled, Hu Xiaodong's first reaction was naturally to shout for him to stop, but before he could, Dazhuang's robust figure had already climbed through the opened floorboard.

Damn it! Without a moment's hesitation, Hu Xiaodong hurriedly followed him up.

The sunlight on the rooftop was glaring and scorching, making Hu Xiaodong instinctively squint as soon as he climbed out.

The scene of a swift charge didn't happen as expected; Dazhuang was crouching behind the pure white sheet, like a leopard lurking in the dense forest awaiting its prey, his bull-like eyes fixed intently on the rooftop across.

Silently lying down as well, Hu Xiaodong looked towards the opposite side. Through the cracks between the sheets, he could clearly see five mutated zombies shuffling on the rooftop across. From their tattered clothing, they matched his earlier assumptions—they were all likely staff from the epidemic prevention station.

In an instant, a broad story outline emerged in Hu Xiaodong's mind.

On the day of the epidemic, a large crowd of people with flu-like symptoms must have surged into the epidemic prevention station in front of him, seeking treatment.

During this period, unexpected human mutations occurred, and the unprepared crowd inevitably fell victim to monster attacks.

Familiar with the building's layout, the epidemic station staff managed to break through the blockades and escape to the rooftop initially.

They initially thought they could avoid it, but who would have expected that they couldn't escape the tragic fate of being infected and assimilated by the virus.

Someone must have been bitten during the escape. Having had similar experiences, Hu Xiaodong boldly speculated, because zombies do not possess climbing abilities. This disastrous collapse must have been broken through from within its own defenses.

"Do you have a way to take out the beasts across with a bow?"

Dazhuang's deep and emotionless voice suddenly sounded. Hu Xiaodong was momentarily dazed for two seconds, then hurriedly snapped out of his chaotic thoughts: "I can do it, but I only have three arrows left! So..."

"Then just go for it, use the bow to take down a few, and jump over to finish the rest, it's not difficult!" Dazhuang, with a resolute gaze, interrupted before Hu Xiaodong could finish speaking.

Feeling slightly drained, Hu Xiaodong wiped his sweat and, after a brief consideration, also thought Dazhuang's proposal might be worth a try, so...

Crouching lightly to the rooftop's entrance, Hu Xiaodong signaled to Wu Chao below to hand up his compound bow.

Wu Chao, already somewhat impatient from waiting below, immediately climbed the wooden ladder upon seeing his elder brother's signal, and handed the compound bow up to the opening.

Taking into account the issue of concealment, Hu Xiaodong didn't dare to stand up straight after receiving the compound bow but instead knelt behind the bedsheet.

He took a carbon arrow from the quiver and steadily placed it onto the arrow platform.

The sharp arrowhead sparkled with cold light under the sun's reflection as Hu Xiaodong gently lifted a corner of the sheet, slowly aiming it out.

The zombies were only a few meters from Hu Xiaodong's position; he could even see the chilling white bone within the torn muscle tissue.

Tilting his head slightly, Hu Xiaodong took a deep breath. After a moment of steady adjustment, he returned his gaze and then…

"Whoosh~" Like a well-oiled machine, Hu Xiaodong didn't hesitate after determining the target, releasing the release device decisively. The sharp arrow whistled through the air, rushing towards the prey ahead like a death knell from hell.

But…

With a "thud," the anticipated scene of zombies falling didn't occur because Hu Xiaodong's rapid shot had missed its mark due to the restricted view and posture.

Even so, the arrow still pierced through the zombie's neck at an angle, and with its unstoppable momentum, caused the struck zombie to stagger backward into its companion.

Seizing the opportunity, Hu Xiaodong swiftly drew another arrow and set it onto the arrow platform. All his actions were fluid and precise, like a finely tuned machine, without the slightest hitch.

Adjusting the aim slightly upward, and contemplating the wind speed, temperature, and other external influences, Hu Xiaodong confidently released the release device again.

Another resounding whoosh echoed as the sharp arrow traced a dazzling arc under the sun's reflection.

The entangled zombies struggled to stand, but what it didn't expect was that a streak of light was swiftly approaching.

The zombie's hand instinctively clawed at the air—perhaps out of instinct, or maybe a vague recollection, but it ultimately couldn't reach that streak of light.

Because in less than 0.1 seconds as its arm lifted, the light pierced through the midpoint between its brow, embedding itself into the skull of its companion behind it.

A double kill with one arrow!

Undoubtedly, this shot was perfect in accuracy, power, and angle.

Yet, Hu Xiaodong obviously felt no excitement from it. He drew another arrow, calmly taking aim at the target, and then…

"Whoosh~" The arrow shot out swiftly as per usual, but unexpectedly, a black shadow simultaneously flashed past Hu Xiaodong's side!
