Gourmet: Midnight Vending

Chapter 152: Thieves Stolen Goods and the Thiefcatcher

The true essence of delicious food always ends up in one situation: gobbling it down.

There's really no such thing as savoring it slowly; except for the first bite, Chen Mo and LuLu devoured it eagerly.

Slurping a mouthful of noodles, it was exhilarating, and they quickly followed it with a sip of soup.

Smack!

Chen Mo felt like the pepper was the finishing touch, adding a unique tingle to the already steaming lamb soup, unlike the usual chili spice.

A sip made his body feel warm and extremely comfortable.

The large bowls of lamb noodle soup were finished in no time, with even the soup all gone.

Chen Mo smacked his lips, "Tastes pretty good, huh?"

"It's really good, let's have another bowl!" LuLu replied heartily. Now that her live streaming career had started, spending 20 yuan on a bowl of noodles wasn't a big deal.

Dunzi was still asleep in the car, oblivious to the happenings outside.

Chen Mo took the two bowls to be automatically cleaned in the cupboard and casually took out two portions of flat noodles.

"Do you feel like something's missing?" Chen Mo asked.

LuLu furrowed her brow, "It does feel like something's missing, missing..."

The two of them faced each other across the dining car, both deep in thought.

Was the lamb noodle soup delicious?

Incredibly delicious!

Was it satisfying?

Absolutely satisfying!

But after eating, for some reason, there was a hollow feeling in the stomach. Technically, it was filling, but there was a void.

After pondering for a while, Chen Mo said, "Could it be that we're missing some bread?"

"Yes, yes! I was just thinking, we're missing some bread! Ideally, a dry baked flatbread to eat with the lamb soup would be perfect!"

Sure enough, Jingzhou people need to pair the main dish with another staple, otherwise, it feels like they haven't eaten at all.

"Next time, today I'm too lazy to deal with baked bread." Chen Mo continued stretching the noodles, having just one bowl of lamb noodle soup was not enough.

The noodles were placed on the chopping board, and Chen Mo skimmed the top surface of the lamb soup again, using a black ladle to pour the soup down.

If cooking two bowls of noodles, the richness of the lamb soup in the pot was still okay, and wouldn't delay cooking more noodles to eat. But if there were too many people eating, and water was added quickly, the richness of this lamb soup would be somewhat insufficient.

So Chen Mo wondered if places selling lamb noodle soup always kept several pots brewing at the same time?

Just about to pour the lamb soup into the pot to start cooking noodles, a strong voice interrupted Chen Mo's actions.

"Hey, Younger Brother Chen, you're really cooking lamb noodle soup early in the morning?" Yu Hui leaned over to look at the black pot, "Wow, this lamb soup is milky white. It has to be said, it takes Younger Brother Chen's craftsmanship, quick, get us a bowl!"

Feng the Second was also curiously standing on tiptoe peeking at the black pot.

In the pot, the lamb soup was boiling vigorously under high heat, the lamb bones at the bottom occasionally surfacing and sinking with the rolling hot soup. After several hours of simmering, the soup was so milky white that visually, it gave a thick feeling. Only when Chen Mo repeatedly scooped and poured it back did he realize it wasn't actually thick.

"It's indeed brewed well, let's have a bowl of noodles, we'll go to Jin Family Manor after eating."

In the middle of the Cultural Square, there were some stone tables and stools with chessboards carved on them, where the village elders usually played chess or cards.

Naturally, the third and fourth ones also wanted to eat. The four of them scanned the QR code to order food and found such a table to sit at.

They watched with anticipation as Chen Mo cooked noodles.

Just as the noodles were put into the pot, Chen Mo heard a deep, raspy voice, "Boss, a bowl of lamb noodle soup."

Chen Mo looked up and said with a smile, "Are you a local?"

Shao Hailong pressed down his hat, cautiously not answering, "It's twenty, right, here's the money."

He took out cash and placed it on the counter, glanced at the four sitting in the middle of the square, and then chose a spot far from them, near the dining car.

There, a set of yellow tables and stools was placed.

Shao Hailong sat, scanning around, feeling satisfied with his choice.

Dakang Stronghold was quiet today, with few people in the village, even fewer at this breakfast spot.

Chen Mo quickly scooped two ladlefuls of lamb soup, adding a portion of flat noodles to the pot.

Fortunately, the pot bought with the cookware was relatively large, able to cook about five or six portions of flat noodles at once.

While Shao Hailong waited, he sent a text message on his phone.

"9 AM, Dakang Stronghold."

It was now half-past eight; estimating it would take about ten minutes to eat a bowl of noodles, he'd give the other brothers some time for breakfast, so the action could start right at nine.

Waiting, Shao Hailong sniffed curiously, looking toward the dining car and the small boss inside.

"When he said 'fellow countryman' earlier, could it be he's also from Jin Province?"

"A Jin Province native with such skills, running a stall in the village? Geez, you see all kinds of people."

Shao Hailong shook off the thoughts, stopped overthinking, only curious about how the pot of lamb soup would taste.

With five servings of noodles being served simultaneously, Chen Mo skillfully added various seasonings to the large bowls, first ladling in lamb soup to melt the lamb fat in the bowls, then lifting the noodles into the big bowls.

Sprinkling a handful of chopped scallions and cilantro, laying three slices of lean lamb between layers of fat.

Yu Hui hurried over and sniffed the bowl, "Awesome! This is definitely the best lamb noodle soup I've seen in recent years."

Feng the Second, holding his bowl, was equally shocked.

He thought the helper Yu Hui brought back was just here to play, but unexpectedly, he was genuinely skilled. This lamb soup, looking milky white, actually, if you slightly shake the bowl, you can see it's a bit clear.

As locals who need a bowl of lamb noodle soup every now and then, Feng the Second knew very well the state of this lamb soup was different from the rich milky white broth usually seen on the market today.

That type of soup has undergone "traditional hard work" or is pasteurized, or too much lamb fat is added and then boiled vigorously. The soup base becomes so rich it looks like milk.

Those not accustomed to it will most likely have stomach issues from a bowl because, honestly, it's all fat and bone paste.

But Chen Mo's was different, not purely milky white; the extra broth made it look white, but when scooped with a spoon, it seemed a bit clear.

Feng the Second rushed back to the stone table with his noodles, "It would be great to have a bit of chili."

"Guess Younger Brother Chen didn't have time to prepare it; if he had, he would have mentioned it," Yu Hui stirred his bowl with chopsticks, watching as the lamb fat on the bottom melted, floating on the soup surface, instantly releasing the massive fragrance contained in the sesame oil.

Couldn't resist, time to eat!

Shao Hailong now had his noodles, lowered his head, and sniffed.

Those bits of cilantro and chopped scallions were indeed right on point for him, steaming with the fragrance of cilantro and scallions, mingling with the myriad aromas of the lamb fat, with the fresh taste of lamb soup at the base.

What enchanted Shao Hailong most was the rich wheat aroma!

No more pondering, time to eat!

Shao Hailong slurped a mouthful of noodles, feeling invigorated to the point his scalp tingled, exhaling hot breath from the heat.

At that moment, two young men with slightly weary expressions sat on either side of him.

The already small yellow table suddenly felt crowded.

Shao Hailong found it odd; with so many stone tables around, were these two crazy to squeeze in with him?

Then, he heard the fellow on his left speak.

"If you want to eat Boss Xiao Chen's food, you've got to do this. The closer you sit, the more you can eat later, if you're too far, it'll be too late."

Shao Hailong felt like laughing, there weren't even a few people in the square, such a boast. Even if it tasted great, was there a need for such exaggeration?

The guy on his right clearly didn't believe it either.

"Is it that great? Let's eat a bowl of noodles first."

Liu Yang turned his head and shouted.

"Younger Brother Chen, two bowls of lamb noodle soup!"
