Gourmet: Midnight Vending

Chapter 40: Ning County's Grain Depot

Chen Mo really didn't understand. Chasing by car was one thing, after all, four wheels do run fast.

Chasing by bike was also understandable, at least there were still two wheels.

But what kind of mindset is chasing on foot?

And they've already run three or four kilometers, and these guys aren't even red-faced or out of breath, are they beasts or something?

Getting closer, Chen Mo recognized them; they were the students who went to the internet cafe at night and had their meals stolen by their roommates.

"Whoa, Brother Chen, finally caught up with you. What are you making? We could smell it from a mile away."

"Yeah, Brother Chen, if it weren't for your aroma, I really couldn't have run these four kilometers today. Amazing!"

The outrageous part was that one guy actually held onto the cart and jumped up to look, "Whoa, looks like braised meat!"

Chen Mo was speechless, prying the guy's hand off his cart window, "If you're going to run, then run properly. I've already got two bikes and if I have to drag you six along, we won't get to Ning County by tomorrow."

It was obvious that when the guy grabbed the window, Chen Mo felt the food cart slow down quite a bit.

Ma Qiang laughed awkwardly, "Actually, we didn't mean to. Today was a training day, planned to run ten kilometers, then heard you're not setting up today and going to Ning County, so we just..."

Zhou Hu howled, "So we doubled up on training! Running twenty kilometers!"

Round trip, exactly twenty kilometers.

Chen Mo had some admiration for these college students. Having been to college himself, he understood the principle that youth is just a past that you begin to miss before you've even experienced it. The whole process is filled with rampant appetite and desire.

If desire cannot be fulfilled, then damn it, only appetite can be satisfied!

"Buns. I wasn't planning to cook, but since you all caught up, I'll just use some leftover flour to try making some braised pork buns."

Upon hearing they were buns, the students howled in excitement.

Chen Mo gave a knowing smile, this age is really great, even something as simple as buns can make them so excited.

Pulling out a camp chair from the cabinet and opening it, Chen Mo sat at the back of the cart, crossing his legs and enjoying everything.

Ten minutes later, the braised meat reached its shining point, and Chen Mo stood up and turned off the heat directly!

[Perfect!]

In his mind appeared simple explanations, as Chen Mo peeled the eggs he'd cooked and soaked in cold water, while reading the text.

[The essence of braised meat lies in soaking. Long stewing only makes the meat softer, while maintaining the proper texture is crucial.]

Now that it was said, it seemed true.

After all, what's in the pot is minced meat, which is almost cooked after frying, and with low heat for over ten minutes it's definitely fully cooked.

The peeled eggs were tossed into the pot.

He had put them in after the water boiled, cooking them for only four minutes. Chen Mo learned this from his mom as a child, bringing one to class every day—a perfect soft-boiled egg!

The eggs were tossed in, the lid closed again, and left alone.

According to the recipe instructions, it needs to soak for at least half an hour before being used as filling, so there's no rush.

Perfect timing, LuLu turned around with an arrogant tilt of her head, "Boss Xiao Chen~ We've arrived in Ning County, where to next?"

Chen Mo entered on the map: Grain Station.

Thinking of Old Jiang now driving without using navigation, Chen Mo understood why Old Jiang told him to just ask locals once he got to Ning County.

"Follow the navigation."

"You're going to the grain station?"

"Yeah, why?"

LuLu handed the phone back to Chen Mo, "I know this! I'm from Ning County, and this grain station was from the eighties and nineties, it's long abandoned now."

"Nobody's there?" Chen Mo thought, Jiang Fei clearly told him it was there, wouldn't it be a wasted trip?

"People are still there." LuLu leaned against the dashboard, counting on her fingers, "There's someone making vinegar, making tofu, and grinding flour. I often went with my mom as a kid, got our grain milled there."

"People from Ning County buy tofu and vinegar from the grain station—cheap and delicious, all handmade!"

Bingo!

Chen Mo snapped his fingers, "That's right, we need to go to the grain station."

LuLu nodded, "Alright then, I'll drop you at the grain station, then I'll wait to eat a bun and head home to rest and think about Boss He's suggestion."

Oh right, Chen Mo remembered what LuLu said when she first got in the car.

Because recently He Chunming had been persuading her to work as a technician instead of part-time cashier, so she was quite annoyed and took a few days off to rest.

It seemed LuLu really intended to return to Ning County instead of wanting to start her own Xiao Huang food cart.

Chen Mo thought about it, feeling that LuLu's experience was quite rough too, "I think people should really give their all, effort can indeed change something."

LuLu turned the wheel, steering into a small road, "Boss Xiao Chen, you speak well and cook well. Your efforts surely pay off. Even in street vending, you stand out."

Although Chen Mo couldn't see LuLu's expression, he could vaguely feel her helplessness.

Having not known each other long, Chen Mo couldn't say much, so he went along with her words, "Yeah, effort may not make you stand out, but at least it can set you apart."

LuLu's back stiffened slightly, "We're here, Boss Xiao Chen."

Chen Mo jumped off the cart with a grin, surveying the area, which indeed seemed a bit shabby and desolate.

The so-called grain station was just an ordinary courtyard, with a row of residential houses at the edge that looked very run-down.

One of the house walls had a circle painted in oil with large characters in the middle.

[Grind]

It wouldn't be surprising if this was the place!

Chen Mo walked over and knocked on the metal door, but got no response, while the person next door was knocked out instead.

"Looking for Old Zhang?"

"Yes, is he not in?"

"Old Zhang went to see his wheat, should be back around seven."

The woman speaking glanced at Chen Mo, then curiously looked at the Xiao Huang cart and the group of odd people beside it.

"If you want, you can wait."

With that, she went back inside her house.

To complete the task, Chen Mo decided to wait a bit, just in time to start making the buns!

"Hey? Where did that girl go?"

"No idea, parked the car and left." Zhou Hu had already climbed into the cart, searching around but not finding the pot of braised meat Chen Mo had made.

"I say, you've got no boundaries at all!" Chen Mo teased.

Zhou Hu chuckled, "I'm a college student, after all."

"Alright, alright, hurry down, don't delay my work."

After getting Zhou Hu off the cart, Chen Mo took out the iron pot from the cabinet.

Not bad, it's already been over half an hour, the pot felt warm, likely still above fifty degrees.

This is the optimal temperature for soaking braised meat, soaking while also stewing.

After all, what Chen Mo made wasn't truly braised meat, the ingredients inside were already minced, and didn't require long stewing to absorb flavor.

Placing the pot back on the counter, Chen Mo opened the lid under the hopeful eyes of those who followed from Jingzhou to Ning County.
