Diary of a Criminal Investigator

Chapter 228: Shen Yan's Discovery

Forensic doctors are also human, and so are the crime scene investigators.

Some scenarios can be dealt with easily, but others are difficult to accept strictly from a human instinct standpoint.

In Qinzhou City, the seven skeletons within the Minghe Bridge, though spine-chilling, aren't particularly nauseating.

But now, even Liu Guodong and Wang Changjiang, the two elders, are frowning.

This scene is somewhat hard to accept.

The decay of a corpse has very distinct characteristics at different stages.

However, neither Liu Guodong nor Wang Changjiang has ever seen the entire progression of corpse decomposition in their careers.

They have seen many fresh bodies at the initial stage.

Bodies in the second stage of bloating, which present a giant-like appearance, they've also encountered a few.

But an animatedly decomposing corpse, especially in the late stages, is a first for them both.

By comparison, Shen Yan and Lu Chuan are somewhat better off.

The forensic teaching at Public Security University is vastly different now compared to before.

In the past, forensic doctors could only learn through books, specimens, or teachers' descriptions and some pictures.

But by Shen Yan's school days, video teaching had become a very common method.

Content that was previously inconvenient to show, or could not be clearly demonstrated, especially dynamic content, has become routine in videos.

Differently decayed corpses are not common within a province, but if viewed from a national perspective, such cases increase.

Thus, Shen Yan had experienced examinations of five different corpse forms during university.

The professor who taught them was also quite ruthless, repeatedly showing different forms and periods of differently decaying bodies to the class.

Having been through that baptism, Shen Yan is somewhat resistant to the current situation.

Lu Chuan studied crime scene investigation in college, though he didn't specifically study the morphological characteristics of decaying bodies.

He didn't experience video bombardment like Forensic Doctor Shen, but he has intermediate body insect egg identification analysis skills from systematic training.

Though the current situation is somewhat unbearable, according to Lu Chuan's skills and experience, this is a small case.

Liu Guodong and Wang Changjiang exchanged glances, then each looked at their own apprentice.

Oh...

It's tough to mentor apprentices these days.

They can't afford to lose face in front of them.

Wang Changjiang cleared his throat lightly, seeming to cough with a heavier breadth.

He inhaled more of the odorous air, causing his face to turn a bit pale.

But as a mentor, can he lose face at this moment?

Of course not!

"Shen, you can be the lead for the autopsy later to build your courage, and I'll assist you."

Shen Yan nodded, agreeing firmly.

She's fully armed to the teeth; her gas mask is faithfully fulfilling its duty, leaving her with no strange smells.

As a young woman of the new era, she is determined to become a modern forensic doctor.

Who says a forensic doctor must be covered in strange smells, working in a dark basement?

Forensic doctors can also exist under the sun and enjoy the beach and love.

Though some forensic doctors believe that the odor of corpses is inherently part of an autopsy, and how could a qualified forensic doctor not smell it?

But Shen Yan feels that having her mentor in this aspect is enough.

As for when Wang Changjiang retires, Shen Yan will have her own apprentices, and it'll be nice having them fill in.

The four of them worked together and stripped off all the clothing in less than ten minutes.

"There's a penetrative wound on the left chest!"

The cause of death for the decomposed body is easy to ascertain, since the body has not entirely rotted, and some wounds can still be confirmed by visual inspection.

"But there's an issue."

Lu Chuan picked up the white T-shirt that had just been removed.

"The clothes on the corpse have no signs of damage."

Liu Guodong frowned as he noted it down.

It's illogical.

The body has a penetrative wound on the left chest, initially identifying the cause of death as stabbing with a sharp weapon leading to excessive blood loss.

But why is there no damage to the clothing the body is wearing?

A sharp weapon pierced the body, yet there was no damage to the outer garment.

Why?

"First, when the stabbing happened, the hem of the clothing might have been lifted, but this is unlikely."

Lu Chuan spread out the T-shirt, analyzing based on his judgment.

"Judging by the location of the penetrative wound, it's basically at the heart's location, which is relatively at the upper part of the body compared to the chest cavity."

"What kind of murderer would pull up the shirt above the chest during a murder?"

"Moreover, the body's undergarment has no damage either."

Both the outerwear and underwear are undamaged, which is indeed peculiar.

"Then there's the second reason, the clothes on the decomposing body might have been put on by the murderer post-mortem."

This explanation is evidently more credible than the previous one.

"The clothes are put on by someone else."

Shen Yan suddenly walked over and picked up the undergarment from the edge of the dissection table.

The bra, which Lu Chuan had also cut open from the front with scissors, was held up by Shen Yan in its strap section.

"A normal person wouldn't have a bra hooked backward."

Shen Yan laid the bra flat, showing the twisted straps.

"Wearing it this way would be uncomfortable; the bra was hooked backward by the murderer."

To be honest, Lu Chuan hadn't noticed this detail.

His judgment that the clothes were put on by the murderer post-homicide was based on the analysis ability granted by his intermediate crime scene investigation skills.

Linking this with the lethal wound on the victim's chest.

However, Shen Yan provided solid evidence supporting Lu Chuan's judgment, the backward bra hook.

It's certainly abnormal for someone to wear underwear this way.

So, there's now a bit of a mystery.

"If the clothes were put on by the murderer, or possibly by someone else, we can't be sure if the clothes on the body actually belong to the deceased?"

Shen Yan confidently nodded, having her own perspective on Lu Chuan's query.

"I think it's highly likely not the deceased's clothing, or partially it is, partially it's not."

"Oh? How so?"

"Look at this underwear brand."

Lu Chuan looked at the underwear tag Shen Yan pointed at.

"This is a new Secret Garden lingerie, quite expensive, over a thousand yuan apiece."

Over a thousand yuan for a bra?

The three men looked at each other, evidently not familiar with such pricing trends.

"However, the T-shirt the body is wearing is very cheap, around a hundred yuan from Pure Cotton, which doesn't quite match most people's clothing expenses."
