The guy didn't even have time to get his words straight before Xu Chunliang slapped him across the face.
His strike was quick and fierce. "I'm here busy saving a life, and you bastard sneak up on me with a dirty move? I ought to beat the crap out of you, you idiot!"
After the slap, Xu Chunliang immediately followed with a kick straight to the guy's abdomen, sending him flying backward and landing with a thud on the ground. On his knees and with his hands on the ground, he looked just like a big toad. The problem was, the ground was littered with beer bottle shards, and sharp pains shot through his palms as the glass cut into him.
Mei Ru Xue quickly held onto Xu Chunliang, worried that if she didn't intervene, he might go on to give the guy a thorough beating, and it could turn lethal.
A few female students also went to help the guy up, while the girl who had nearly choked to death began explaining to her boyfriend what had really happened.
Only then did the guy realize the situation. Clutching his stomach in pain, he apologized, "Sorry, I... I made a mistake..."
Mei Ru Xue advised Xu Chunliang, "Leave it. It's a misunderstanding!"
Xu Chunliang looked coldly at the guy, "I'm not hitting you because you smashed that beer bottle on me from behind; show some respect to my girlfriend! Even I can't bear to scold her, yet you have the guts to insult her? If you dare say a word, I'll finish you!"
Mei Ru Xue blushed, guessing he was using the situation as an excuse, but couldn't help feeling warm and touched: "Forget it, I'll take you to the hospital."
Just then, the police arrived, due to the restaurant owner mistaking the incident for a fight and calling them. Upon understanding the situation, the officers advised them to go handle their injuries first.
Xu Chunliang's scalp was not seriously hurt. At the county hospital's emergency room, it turned out to be just a small cut from the glass, no stitches needed. Scalp wounds bleed a lot due to the rich blood supply.
On Mei Ru Xue's insistence, he also got a head CT scan, which showed everything was normal.
The guy who cracked Xu Chunliang's head also came along. His hands were in bad shape, with the doctor spending over ten minutes removing glass shards.
Xu Chunliang had saved the guy's girlfriend; he came late due to other commitments, and upon arrival, he witnessed Xu Chunliang holding his girlfriend from behind aggressively, something no sane man could stand, leading him to impulsively grab a beer bottle and strike Xu Chunliang.
His name was Li Yonggang, a student at the local physical education college, and his girlfriend was his classmate.
The police lectured him, insisting he needed the victim's forgiveness. If Xu Chunliang chose to press charges, Li Yonggang might face detention or at least a disciplinary record, complicating his future.
Seeing they were just poor 18 or 19-year-old students, Xu Chunliang decided not to pursue any consequences against them. He realized no good deed goes unpunished: the last time saving Mei Ru Xue, this time getting injured again. Fortunately, the injury wasn't severe, just a chunk of hair cut off, but the doctor assured him it would heal without a scar.
The final resolution was Li Yonggang issuing a solemn apology to both Xu Chunliang and Mei Ru Xue and covering their medical expenses.
The group of students, all financially strapped, pooled their money intending to transfer it to Xu Chunliang, but Mei Ru Xue, unable to watch, told them it was unnecessary.
The plump girl was Ma Jincai. She knew clearly that if Xu Chunliang hadn't stepped in promptly to rescue her today, she could have choked to death on that piece of beef.
Thinking back, dying wasn't the frightening part; it was the embarrassing means of dying. One could say Xu Chunliang saved her life.
Grateful beyond words, Ma Jincai offered to add Xu Chunliang on WeChat.
Xu Chunliang refused, but Mei Ru Xue and Ma Jincai exchanged contact information.
As they left the hospital, Mei Ru Xue remarked, "Not bad, doing good deeds without leaving a name." She meant Xu Chunliang not adding Ma Jincai on WeChat.
Xu Chunliang chuckled, "Mainly because she's not attractive."
Mei Ru Xue was speechless. One comment destroyed his noble image!
That night, Xu Chunliang stayed at the government guesthouse. The next morning, he removed the bandage on his head, took several photos of the back of his head with his phone, finally succeeding after several attempts. The injury was indeed not serious — his scalp was bruised from the beer bottle and had a one-centimeter cut from the glass, already scabbed over by morning.
This incident proved once again the necessity of training, even in peaceful times, as danger is ever-present. Last night, it was fortunate Mei Ru Xue bravely rushed in; if she had been a moment later, the broken bottle might have stabbed into him.
At seven in the morning, Mei Ru Xue messaged him, saying she had a meeting in the morning, breakfast was free, and she'd paid for his room. If he needed to head back urgently, he could go ahead, but if not, they could leave together after lunch.
Of course, Xu Chunliang wasn't in a hurry, not because he was intentionally waiting for Mei Ru Xue, but because he didn't want to return to the messy situation there.
Even though Xu Chunliang wasn't in a rush to leave, the Hu Shan Town Police Station called again, with the officer handling the Huayuan Group assault case using a slightly stern tone, asking Xu Chunliang to return to the station to assist in the investigation as soon as possible.
Xu Chunliang told them to speak to Secretary Tan Haiyan at the hospital if needed, but the officer's tone became even more severe, telling Xu Chunliang to cooperate with the police investigation immediately or face the consequences.
Xu Chunliang hung up the phone directly. Is the police station that arrogant now? Asking me to assist in the investigation is just asking me for help. Who asks for help with such attitude?
However, he also realized that people wouldn't find him for no reason. Generally, this means he has been listed as a suspect.
Xu Chunliang found the situation amusing. Luckily, he wasn't on the island when Dong Changhao and his people got beaten. Otherwise, he might be suspected of being the one who did it.
His absence is beyond doubt. The police station staff wouldn't be unclear about such a simple situation. Could they possibly suspect that he hired someone to beat the Huayuan Group personnel? This line of thinking is something Xu Chunliang has to admire.
During breakfast, Zhao Feiyang called and asked why he hadn't reported the investigation team getting beaten.
Xu Chunliang said, "Weren't you giving me a more important task? I'm still in the county city. Secretary Geng is overseeing the hospital now."
Zhao Feiyang whispered, "Xiaoxu, the investigation team incident isn't related to you, is it?"
Xu Chunliang exploded upon hearing this: "Dean Zhao, what do you mean by that? Would I? If I were to do it, it wouldn't be so light!" It seems more than one person suspects him, given his past of beating the Huayuan Group's Young Master.
Zhao Feiyang was indeed amused and sighed, "Xiaoxu, this incident has a negative impact. You must handle it properly without damaging the relationship between the two parties."
Xu Chunliang said, "Dean Zhao, are you suspecting my involvement in this matter?"
"How could I suspect you? Currently, there are highly discordant voices within Huayuan Group. They suspect that our hospital is deliberately obstructing the asset appraisal process."
Xu Chunliang thought that their initial intention was to obstruct it. Now they're worried about offending the Huayuan Group: "I feel anyone with a bit of sense wouldn't suspect our hospital. We're negotiating cooperation. What good does beating those assessment guys do for us? Surely, someone wants to sabotage the cooperation between the two."
Zhao Feiyang appreciated Xu Chunliang's clarity of mind, and indeed agreed. Since learning of the incident, Zhao had listed competitors in his mind but soon ruled each out. Peer public hospitals wouldn't resort to such disgraceful measures.
Opposition voices within the hospital are many, but internal employees are unlikely to act this way.
Zhao Feiyang believes that Huayuan Group provoked someone, and the real culprit behind this violent act is a rival of Huayuan Group.
But Huayuan Group thinks differently. They suspect Changxing, particularly focusing on Xu Chunliang personally, as he has a history of violence and even dared to hit the beloved son of the Huayuan Group chairman, let alone other employees.
Mei Ru Xue received notification as well. County leaders had specifically discussed this matter with her, as it impacts Weishan County's overall image. Mishandling could affect Weishan Island's image among investors. If basic safety for investors isn't guaranteed, how can others feel secure in investing?
Mei Ru Xue assured the leadership that she would immediately focus on strengthening security upon returning, creating a safe, stable, and harmonious business environment, reassuring the public and investors that such violent incidents will not recur.
This sudden matter affected Mei Ru Xue's mood. On her way back, she kept receiving calls, mostly related to this issue.
Xu Chunliang didn't disturb her. After she ended her call, he handed her a bottle of water, helping her unscrew the cap. The Grandmaster Xu learned to care for others.
Mei Ru Xue thanked him, took a few sips, and remembered something. She handed him a shopping bag containing a shirt bought in a rush this morning since the shirt she gave Xu Chunliang last time got blood-stained yesterday.
Xu Chunliang took a look and saw a hat too, joking, "I heard it's bad luck for women to give men hats."
Mei Ru Xue laughed, "You really have a lot of quirks."
Xu Chunliang put the hat on his head, "At least it's not green."
Mei Ru Xue said, "What's wrong with green? It's quite eco-friendly."
Xu Chunliang said, "Then next time I'll give you one."
Mei Ru Xue glared at him, "I don't want it."
Do not do unto others what you wouldn't want for yourself.
Weishan Island's pier was already in sight. Xu Chunliang told Mei Ru Xue that the car was waiting at the pier and asked if she wanted to go together. His question wasn't unnecessary, mainly considering Mei Ru Xue's stature. She might worry about others gossiping.
Mei Ru Xue didn't mind, asking him to drop her off at the town government on the way.
