Doctor: Picking Up Attributes in the Hospital

Chapter 260: The Alarm Bell Never Stops Ringing

"Doctor, what exactly will the effects be?"

The competent woman asked anxiously.

Her niece was only 14 years old, in the prime of her youth. If her brain is damaged, how will she study, how will she live?

Wouldn't that ruin everything?

"If the brain is severely deprived of oxygen and damaged, during recovery there may be intellectual disability, slow reactions, and memory decline. There could also be repeated seizures, frequent limb twitching, sudden loss of consciousness, and foaming at the mouth."

"However, the patient's current condition is relatively stable."

Zhao Heng said slowly.

"Doctor, please find a way to save this child. The child only attempted suicide because of overwhelming academic pressure."

The competent woman said with great distress.

She never expected that her middle school niece would attempt suicide due to the pressure of studies. Are today's children really that mentally fragile?!

"We will do our best."

Zhao Heng nodded, saying with certainty.

"Auntie?"

Just at that moment, the girl's sister hesitantly spoke to the competent woman.

"The most important thing now is to save her life. We'll discuss other matters once your sister recovers."

The competent woman seemed to know what the girl's sister wanted to say and stopped her from continuing.

Seeing this scene, Zhao Heng naturally understood that it was surely about the previous issue where the emergency doctor in another hospital mistakenly inserted the gastric tube into the trachea.

However, Zhao Heng couldn't help with such matters; it all depended on how it would be handled later.

This also served as a wake-up call for him that at any time, one must be careful and not be negligent.

The time quickly reached four in the afternoon.

Zhao Heng was in his office writing a patient record when suddenly a haggard and exhausted-looking middle-aged man walked in from outside the office.

"Who are you?"

Zhao Heng was a bit puzzled, but there was something about this middle-aged man that felt similar to him—it was obvious he was also a doctor. But why had he come to find Zhao Heng?

"You're Dr. Zhao, right? Hello, Dr. Zhao. I'm Wei Xiang, an emergency doctor from Tong City Fifth People's Hospital."

The middle-aged man, Wei Xiang, spoke with a bit of weariness.

"Are you the patient's first attending doctor?"

Zhao Heng asked with some surprise, having wondered what kind of emergency doctor would mistakenly insert a gastric tube into the trachea.

"Yes, I was responsible for the rescue at the time."

Wei Xiang nodded.

"Have a seat. You weren't the one in charge of the intubation, were you?"

Zhao Heng thought for a moment and said.

This was easy to guess. If he were responsible for the intubation, he wouldn't have come to see Zhao Heng voluntarily, especially since the girl's sister and aunt were here.

"It was a nurse from our hospital's emergency department."

Wei Xiang said with a bitter smile. Although he wasn't the one who intubated, he was responsible for the rescue, and failing to notice that the gastric tube had been inserted into the trachea, he bore significant responsibility.

"The patient's condition is quite stable now, and the effect of blood perfusion has been good."

Zhao Heng seemed to understand what Wei Xiang wanted to ask and spoke before he could.

"Dr. Zhao, will there be any sequelae?"

Wei Xiang sat down and continued to ask.

If it weren't for his relationship with the nurse who intubated, he wouldn't have come here. He knew that outside, the girl's aunt had already said she would hold him fully accountable.

"You're a doctor, too. With such a large volume of fluid infused into the lungs, the fact that the patient didn't die on the spot is already good fortune."

Zhao Heng shook his head slightly.

The event has occurred, and now it's time to handle the aftermath, though Zhao Heng felt powerless regarding that aspect.

Though they were colleagues, there was nothing Zhao Heng could do. All he could do was try his best to formulate an individualized treatment plan, aiming to minimize sequelae and restore the girl to normal health.

"Alas..."

Hearing Zhao Heng's words, Wei Xiang, who had looked ten years older overnight, could not help but let out a long sigh.

"Currently, the patient's condition is still stable; the worst-case scenario hasn't happened, and there's still a chance for remedy."

Zhao Heng thought for a moment and said, as a fellow doctor, even if he couldn't help much, he wouldn't add insult to injury.

"Thank you, Dr. Zhao, you've been such a help."

Wei Xiang expressed his gratitude repeatedly.

This time, he was caught up in the rush and failed to notice that the nurse inserted the gastric tube into the trachea.

Although he wasn't the one who carried out the procedure, as the doctor in charge of the rescue, he couldn't shirk the responsibility.

Now it's a matter of figuring out how to resolve this. But as Zhao Heng mentioned, the patient's condition is still stable, and at least she is alive, which gives some room for maneuver.

"Be more careful in the future. These kinds of incidents, if they happen even once, can ruin a lifetime's career."

Zhao Heng also sighed and said. He couldn't imagine such a thing happening to him. Whenever he treated a patient, no matter how minor the procedure, he remained fully attentive and cautious.

"Thank you, Dr. Zhao. I'll take full responsibility for this incident."

Wei Xiang replied with a bitter smile.

He was responsible for the rescue and couldn't place the blame on the nurse who intubated.

After speaking with Zhao Heng for a few more moments, Wei Xiang left.

As soon as Wei Xiang left, the girl's aunt rushed in.

"Dr. Zhao, how can someone like that be a doctor? I asked some of my friends who are doctors, and they said they've never even heard of someone inserting a gastric tube into the trachea."

The girl's aunt said angrily.

While the situation was partly due to her niece's own actions—overdosing and poisoning herself—the rescue process was absurd and violated the basic rules of medical practice.

"So, what do you intend to do?"

Zhao Heng asked.

"Dr. Zhao, what do you suggest?"

The girl's aunt was momentarily at a loss upon hearing Zhao Heng's question.

The girl's parents were still on a business trip and wouldn't be back until the next day. The aunt was only a guardian and couldn't decide on certain matters.

"Follow the proper procedures. The child's condition is currently stable. As for handling the situation, you can hand it over to the Medical Malpractice Evaluation Committee. They will handle it based on their findings."

Zhao Heng advised plainly.

In this matter, his role was to treat the girl to the best of his ability. As for the responsibility that Wei Xiang might face, that was beyond Zhao Heng's control.

"I suppose that's all we can do. Dr. Zhao, if every doctor were like you, that would be ideal."

The girl's aunt sighed and said.
