I Was Forced To Marry The Phoenix Empress

Chapter 83: Informing the Zhou Couple

Earlier, he had decided not to share this information and let them figure it out themselves, so as not to attract any unnecessary trouble to himself.

However, now he felt that it was his obligation to inform both Zhou Tian and Zhou Fei about it after being treated so well by them. If not, then he would be overwhelmed with guilt if something untoward happened to the family because of this in the future.

From the looks of it, Zhou Mei had still not yet informed them about it because she never suspected her second uncle in the first place. Otherwise, Yi Chen felt that they wouldn't be acting so calm right now.

His sudden breakthrough to the Meridian Refinement Stage had raised his confidence slightly and also played a small part in this decision.

With all this in mind, Yi Chen finally made up his mind and the next moment said, "Master Zhou and Madam Fei…I would like to inform you about something in private."

As he said that, Yi Chen glanced towards Zhou Mei.

"???"

Zhou Mei couldn't help but furrow her brows in confusion when she felt Yi Chen's gaze towards her.

As for the Zhou couple, they too developed a subtle furrow on their brows. If it was something that couldn't be discussed in front of Zhou Mei, then that could only be the topic related to her, the targeted attacks on her.

"Alright then," Zhou Tian nodded and the next moment said, "Mei'er, wait outside the dining hall."

"Me? But why???" Zhou Mei, after hearing what Yi Chen had just said, wanted to listen to his next words even more and raised her voice in protest.

"Mei'er, be a good girl and wait outside, otherwise mother will get angry," Zhou Fei raised her voice the next moment.

Being more scared of her mother than her father, Zhou Mei relented.

"Alright…" with a gloomy expression, she finally left the dining hall, and now only Yi Chen, Zhou Tian and Zhou Fei were present inside.

"So, what is it that you want to inform us?' Zhou Tian asked with curiosity and seriousness apparent on his face.

"Before that, I have a request from you," Yi Chen said all of a sudden.

"Go on," Zhou Tian nodded and gestured to Yi Chen to continue speaking. Zhou Fei too looked at him curiously.

"Can you please keep my identity as the one who has saved Zhou Mei a secret? My cultivation is still low, and I don't want to attract unnecessary problems," Yi Chen requested.

If he didn't request this after he had revealed what was in his mind, then he felt that he would end up making a lot of enemies.

"Ah, about that? Don't worry, I've already blocked all news from going outside this mansion. Only my trusted servants know, while the members of the clan only know that you've done a great deed for me and have gained my favour."

"Then I can rest at ease," Yi Chen said with gratitude apparent on his face and continued, "The reason I made the earlier request is that I have a suspicion that the person responsible for the attacks on Zhou Mei is very nearby and might even be a member of the Zhou clan…"

"Explain." Zhou Tian replied with only one word. However, just that word was filled with all sorts of feelings. From relief in finally being able to get hints about the perpetrator to anger at them for being related to the clan.

Similar emotions were also apparent on Zhou Fei's countenance. There were a lot of people in the capital city who would gain an advantage if anything happened to Zhou Mei. It was only natural, as she had only recently become the clan's Royal Representative.

It was because of this reason that both Zhou Tian and Zhou Fei were worried, with confusion in being unable to determine who the actual perpetrator of the incident was.

Therefore, Yi Chen's words felt like the light at the end of the tunnel which they had been waiting for.

"Yes," Yi Chen nodded with the same seriousness and continued, "From what Zhou Mei had told me during our talks, I was able to deduce that the suspect may be someone within the clan."

"How can you be so sure?" Zhou Fei asked with a frown. Doubting a clan member without proper justification was considered a great taboo, so this was a question she had to ask.

"It's because of the content which Zhou Mei had shared with me. She had said that before she sneaked out of the clan, she had left a letter for her second uncle …"

Although Yi Chen wanted to directly blame the Second Uncle, he was unsure about the depth of this second uncle's relationship with Zhou Mei's parents. As a result, in his words, he still left some leeway.

"…I suspect that this letter was seen by someone else before Zhou Mei's second uncle had informed the two of you about her whereabouts, or that while Zhou Mei was sneaking into the carriage, someone inside the clan secretly saw her doing that. Although there can be other cases as well…"

Before Yi Chen could go on, he was interrupted by Zhou Tian.

"Wait, what did you just say?" Zhou Tian asked with a frown.

"That someone from the clan could have seen Zhou Mei sneaking into the carriage?" Zhou asked with a time of hesitancy.

"Not that," Zhou Tian said with a trace of irritation and said, "the one before that. The one about the letter. What letter are you talking about?"

"Oh…it's the letter Zhou Mei had left for her second uncle. On it, she had written where she was heading to so that her uncle could inform the two of you so as to appease your worry and anger towards her act…"

"Is that so?" A severe expression formed on Zhou Tian's face the next moment as he immediately called in a loud voice.

"Steward Cheng!"

"Yes, Patriarch," the steward, who was a Qi absorption Stage expert, appeared inside the hall in the blink of an eye, like an apparition.

"Summon Zhou Ding here right now!" Zhou Tian roared with fury apparent in his voice.

"Patriarch, Second Elder Ding had left for hunting in the Great Beast Forest a week ago. Since then, he has not returned."
