"How come there aren't four? Aren't there four of us here?"
Upon hearing her grandfather's teasing, Fu Ling'er immediately argued back.
"That's only if you cultivate to the level of an Innate Grandmaster. Besides, I'm certain I can become an Innate Grandmaster, but as for Qiu... kid..."
The Medicine Saint gently encouraged her, pausing before looking towards Qiu Boyuan with a smile, "He's been at the Semi Innate stage for over a decade now, without taking the next step. I'm afraid he might never reach it in this lifetime, so we'll need to find another Innate Grandmaster, or how else will we make up the four?"
"You're wrong, Grandpa!"
But no sooner had he finished speaking than Fu Ling'er immediately retorted. She then turned her head towards Jiang Chen with a smile, "Brother Jiang Chen, if I give you all of Grandfather's medicinal ingredients and spiritual medicines, will you help us refine two Purple Flame Broken Elixirs for us?"
"Sure!" Jiang Chen said, nodding with a light laugh.
Qiu Boyuan's eyes lit up, knowing that Jiang Chen had agreed because of his fondness for Fu Ling'er, unaware of the true value of the Medicine Saint's materials – a fact he was well aware of, feeling a sudden thrill.
"No, Ling'er, even if it's him... What? Purple Flame Broken Elixir?!"
The Medicine Saint wanted to persuade Fu Ling'er further, but suddenly realizing what she said, he turned his head in shock towards Jiang Chen, "You, you, you... Mr. Jiang, you can refine elixirs? And you can refine the Purple Flame Broken Elixir?!"
"Of course!" Before Jiang Chen could respond, Qiu Boyuan interjected, already taking out the Purple Flame Broken Elixir that Jiang Chen had given him.
Snatching the jade box, the Medicine Saint opened it, and his body jolted. He sniffed it, carefully examined it for a while, and spoke in utter shock, "A top-grade Purple Flame Broken Elixir?! How is this possible?"
"Top-grade?!" Qiu Boyuan also jumped in fright, exclaiming in disbelief as he looked at Jiang Chen. He had thought the elixir was merely ordinary, which would have been remarkable enough, let alone being top-grade!
Jiang Chen was somewhat puzzled, but not by their astonishment – he was wondering why Qiu Boyuan was being so enthusiastic.
Looking puzzled at Qiu Boyuan, Jiang Chen's eyes showed a querying expression.
Qiu Boyuan swallowed hard, trying to suppress his own shock, and glanced at the Medicine Saint, who was still in a state of disbelief. Then he leaned close to Jiang Chen and whispered,
"Senior Medicine Saint's medicinal ingredients and spiritual medicines are terrifyingly abundant. Didn't Mr. Jiang want An Long to wait for the second batch of ingredients to be collected, so that pills could be refined for Xuan Long and the others? With Senior Medicine Saint's materials and spiritual medicines, there's more than enough for any elixir, far surpassing what we could gather in a hundred years!"
Jiang Chen was stunned for a moment, then his eyes sparkled as he looked at the Medicine Saint, and at that moment, the Medicine Saint's eyes also shone brightly towards Jiang Chen.
The way they looked at each other was so intense it was as if sparks might fly.
Meanwhile, Qiu Boyuan, seizing a moment when the Medicine Saint wasn't paying attention, snatched the jade box back, swiftly closing the lid and pocketing it, for fear that it would remain in Medicine Saint's possession.
"Stingy!" The Medicine Saint pursed his lips, looking at Jiang Chen with fiery eyes, "Young Jiang, did you really refine this Purple Flame Broken Elixir? Are you an alchemist?!"
"An alchemist?"
After pondering for a moment, Jiang Chen smiled, "I don't know, but I can refine pills."
"Good! Good! Good... Being able to refine pills is all that matters."
Medicine Saint was overjoyed beyond expectation, his eyes filled with hope, "Young Jiang, are you really willing to help Ling'er return to her family? If you nod, not only will all my treasures be yours, but even this old man himself will belong to you. If you're willing, I would sell you my very life!"
Jiang Chen paused, his expression becoming grave.
This was different from talking with Fu Ling'er. He had agreed to help Fu Ling'er partly because he liked the girl, and partly because he really wanted to find some suitable opponents to fight. But now that Medicine Saint was speaking so solemnly, it warranted deeper thought from Jiang Chen.
"Mr. Jiang!"
Qiu Boyuan watched Jiang Chen anxiously from the side. Having the Medicine Saint as an ally was something all major powers coveted. With him, one would possess an endless supply of spiritual medicines. The Medicine Saint's understanding of medicinal properties was terrifying—within a hundred miles, he could locate any spiritual medicine for you.
Yet Medicine Saint didn't rush him. If Jiang Chen had agreed immediately, he would have been suspicious. Medicine Saint didn't believe that Jiang Chen would fail to recognize the danger and difficulty after his conversation with Fu Ling'er.
Fu Ling'er also seemed to realize the severity of the situation and didn't continue to pout and cling. Instead, she just looked at Jiang Chen with a face full of hope.
"Very well," Jiang Chen finally nodded firmly after a long contemplation.
Medicine Saint's heart leaped for joy, but his face quickly turned serious as he cautioned, "Mr. Jiang, remember this, if anyone asks you whether you are an alchemist, unless you can absolutely trust that person, you must not admit it, and you can't even mention you know how to make elixirs. Or else, it will bring you a threat to your life."
"Yes, yes, yes."
Qiu Boyuan nodded vehemently, his face full of guilt, "Mr. Jiang, I apologize; I neglected this matter. Nowadays, aside from a special department within Flame Dragon, alchemists are found only in great martial artist sects and noble families. Moreover, I haven't heard of them being able to produce the Purple Flame Broken Mirror Elixir. If they were to find out about this, they would indeed stop at nothing to secure you for themselves, and if you refused, that might indeed lead to your death!"
"I understand!" Jiang Chen nodded solemnly.
"Let's talk inside," Medicine Saint gestured towards the fenced courtyard with his hand.
As they entered the courtyard, Jiang Chen glanced at the herbs inside and his eyes immediately lit up.
He walked up to a medicine shelf and gazed at the medicinal materials with shining eyes, "Snow Ginseng that's a hundred years old?! Trifoliate Polygonum Multiflorum?! Is this... the rootstock of a Purple Flame Vermilion Fruit? This, this..."
"Young Jiang, all of this is now yours!" said Medicine Saint as he stepped beside Jiang Chen, smiling.
Jiang Chen turned and looked deeply at Medicine Saint, bowing with a cupped fist, "Medicine Saint Senior, I really need these spiritual medicines now. As for Ling'er's matter, I can only say I will do my utmost!"
"I understand," Medicine Saint nodded.
Glancing at the five wooden huts, Jiang Chen turned with a hint of anticipation, "Medicine Saint Senior, do you have a pill furnace here?"
"A pill furnace?" Medicine Saint was momentarily surprised, then nodded lightly, "I do have one, but I'm not sure if it's still functional!"
"Let me see it," Jiang Chen said quickly.
Medicine Saint led Jiang Chen to the hut at the very back, and pushed the door open with his hand.
"This is a pill furnace I acquired thirty years ago. I don't know how to refine pills, so it has been left unused," Medicine Saint pointed inside the hut.
In the room, a half-meter-tall pill furnace sat lonely in the central position, covered in dust.
