Global Game: I Can Choose Instance Rewards

Chapter 71: Relentless Escape and Pursuit

"How is it possible... my dream has natural physical immunity, how could it be instantly killed by this? Could it be that this guy isn't as simply physically brutal as it seems on the surface? Does it have some kind of special damage ability?"

Even though the current outcome was as clear as day, Wang Zhifan still couldn't quite believe what had just happened. While speeding up to escape, he pondered in his heart why the result turned out like this.

According to his original conjecture, his dream was likely just going to scratch the surface of that Corpse King, but he thought he could rely on the characteristics of his own physical-immunity phantom form to entangle the opponent. Even if he couldn't move it, he thought he could at least grossly annoy it, but he didn't expect it to be instantly countered with no chance for obstruction or entanglement at all.

"I can't figure it out... It seems the monsters in this instance can't be judged by common sense, and the strength of this Corpse King is far beyond its seemingly brutish appearance... Then I can only keep running, survive this last day."

Wang Zhifan now understood why the objective of this instance was to survive for a certain period rather than to kill any instance boss. Obviously, the instance boss here was too strong; players had no hope of defeating it, so just managing to escape and survive within a day was considered quite good.

"Fortunately, I have the Chapter of Obscurity, so I don't have to worry about being attacked by non-Corpse King level zombies. But thinking about it, how can other teammates survive this instance with hordes of zombies attacking in front and a strong Corpse King-level enemy chasing from behind? It's unimaginable."

At this moment, Wang Zhifan truly began to feel the survival pressure of this Great Catastrophe instance, especially since his past two days weren't much different from a vacation. Now, he had to flee desperately.

Hence, on the third day of this zombie apocalypse instance famed for its player death rate on the player forum, starting from the morning, there was an unending scene of a different kind.

A young man in wolfhide armor and spider silk shoes kept running along the city's streets, passing through clusters of densely packed zombies, with a similar-looking silhouette always following him through walls and buildings from nearby high rises, observing the distant commotion behind him. His target was a large cloud of dust pursuing him on the ground, only leaving behind collapsed or pierced buildings and long trenches dug ten meters deep wherever it passed.

This game of cat and mouse continued from morning until afternoon, and even when the sun was about to dip below the horizon, it hadn't ended.

"Oh man... this instance is testing city marathons, right! And it's only me participating!"

By now, Wang Zhifan was already drenched in sweat but had to keep running. However, more than his physical exhaustion, it was his mental fatigue that weighed heavier.

This mental fatigue partly came from being pursued by a powerful monster almost the entire day without rest, making him feel irritable. On the other hand, he realized something during this day contrary to what he previously thought: other players in this instance were not being chased relentlessly by a Corpse King like he was!

Throughout his journey, he saw several players who seemed quite at ease, some bullying ordinary zombies, some playing hide and seek with suspected Corpse King presences, and others simply peeking their heads from street-side windows to watch him run by. Nobody was in the same predicament as him!

"Speechless... now the instance's intent to torment me is increasingly blatant..."

With such obvious special treatment, how could Wang Zhifan not realize he was being picked on by the instance? If the instance had any personal consciousness, it must have had its sights on him, wanting only to use the means within scope to quickly do him in.

"There's about twelve hours left. At this speed and with my stamina, I should be able to last until the end of the instance. I must maintain a calm mindset and keep persisting..."

What Wang Zhifan currently felt most fortunate about was that the Corpse King chasing him wasn't very fast, maintaining a constant speed. This allowed him, whose stamina was beyond ordinary imagination, to endure this day-long escape. Although he felt fatigue and pain under the constant pursuit, the Corpse King behind him couldn't hope to catch up before the instance ended, as long as he didn't give up, the guy behind could only chase dust.

As for the notion of Wang Zhifan stopping to fight the pursuing Corpse King, Wang Zhifan completely rejected the idea. He'd rather run till the instance ended.

The reasoning, in part, was his judgment that chances were slim he'd defeat the pursuing Corpse King. Considering the Corpse King's massive physique, terrifying destructive power, consistent stamina, and the unknown force that let it instantly kill his dream in the morning, running away was the optimal strategy.

Additionally, Wang Zhifan suspected that even if he found a way to deal with the pursuing Corpse King, the instance would probably have another Corpse King come after him right after, given an inclination to torment him. So avoiding the risk and just prolonging the go-around till the instance ended was more worthwhile; while tiring, the outcome was at least foreseeable without major risks.

As Wang Zhifan resolved to see the marathon through, deep within the zombie city where he had just completed a large loop, a young man in a black, intricate robe, wearing a black pointed wizard's hat, stood atop a tall building, watching him run in the distance below on the streets.

"This person's stamina is far beyond my expectations; he's quite fast too. He's likely the highest level, most capable player in this instance... Plus, no zombies attack him, could he have a skill similar to mine that simulates the aura of a dead zombie? Interesting... This quality talent seems necessary to bring under my command."

The Mage only observed Wang Zhifan for a few seconds before waving his white Magic Staff to begin his maneuver.

On the streets below, Undead Puppets that appeared identical to ordinary zombies, guided by his mental direction, rushed towards the path Wang Zhifan was running.

A woman clad in ripped, blood-stained clothes wielding a firearm emerged from behind him without expression, moving mechanically to the edge of the rooftop, then raising her gun to aim at the street below, poised to pull the trigger anytime.

Another man, missing an arm, with a wooden expression and evident zombie mutation on his face, entered an invisible state beside the mage in an instant, silently leaping off to land on the roof of a nearby two-story building, swiftly heading towards a certain young man frantically running in the area.
