God's Imitator

Chapter 44: Hanging from the Streetlamp

Compared to Wang Yongxin's glamorous office, the scene on the screen this time was a mess like a pigsty.

It was evidently Zhang Peng's cheap rental room.

A faint light came through a half-basement window, illuminating Zhang Peng, dyed with yellow hair, as he lay on a garbage-strewn bed, picking his toes before lying down again out of boredom.

[As a lazy parasite, you only destroy society, contributing nothing.]

[Theft, robbery, brawling, even after several stints in jail, you will never reform.]

[You have hands and feet but are unwilling to earn an honest living, instead mocking those who toil for their survival.]

[Your malice is like a butterfly flapping its wings, turning into Unforeseen Calamity for innocent people.]

[This time, can you still luckily escape judgment?]

Zhang Peng's videotape was shorter, and soon after, a file appeared on the big screen.

[Name: Zhang Peng, Male, 26 years old.]

[Occupation: Unemployed.]

[Lazy, idle, committed multiple crimes of theft, robbery, and brawling, repeatedly lucky avoiding legal sanction.]

[Judgment: Unadjudicated]

Wang Yongxin looked at Zhang Peng disdainfully; to him, Zhang Peng was a downright scumbag.

If forced to choose one of the two, Wang Yongxin couldn't fathom why Ding Wenqiang would choose him.

Zhang Peng was also a bit panicked, hurriedly explaining, "Brother Ding, Uncle Ding! There's a problem with this file; it makes it look like I've never been caught!

"Think about it; it's impossible. With our country's public security, the police aren't just twiddling their thumbs!

"I must clarify, I did rob once, but only once! And I was quickly caught and sentenced to three years.

"The rest were just minor thefts; I didn't do anything particularly heinous!"

Ding Wenqiang looked at Cell 2, then at Cell 3.

Obviously, he didn't want either Wang Yongxin or Zhang Peng entering Cell 3, as neither was likely to crush their fingers to help others complete the game.

According to the game rules, once entering a cell, they cannot come out nor switch cells.

It's easy to lock them in.

But if they do nothing once in there, just losing their visa time to drag it out, that's quite troublesome.

Wang Yongxin earned at least 200,000 minutes of visa time in 'Blood Poker', he could easily spare them.

As for Zhang Peng, Ding Wenqiang wasn't sure exactly how much visa time he had, but at such a young age, he likely had more than a month initially.

From the perspective of the optimal solution to the game, only someone willing to crush their fingers was suitable to enter Cell 3.

Or at least someone with very little visa time.

The game rules repeatedly emphasized that as the King, Ding Wenqiang must strive to make the fairest judgment possible. Simply detaining and deducting visa time seemed too light a punishment.

Ding Wenqiang looked at Zhang Peng.

In terms of malignancy, Zhang Peng was clearly the more fitting candidate for judgment.

Wang Yongxin wasn't exactly a good boss, but he at least hadn't broken the law. Excluding, of course, the labor laws that were openly flouted everywhere.

Whereas someone like Zhang Peng, lazy and riddled with vices, seemed more like someone meant to be judged in this game.

Zhang Peng swallowed, Ding Wenqiang's gaze making him anxious, and it was obvious he had to do something.

"Uncle Ding! I have something to say, I have something to say!

"In this game, we're all sinners, but do we need to be categorized?

"The game requires sinners to receive appropriate judgments, just like that young programmer said before, the judgment should match the symbolic meaning of the crime, right?

"Yes, I stole, I robbed, but what does that have to do with these games? If forced to connect, it's slightly more relevant to Cell 3.

"Besides, the wrongs I've done are just petty thefts; in terms of the entire society, such minor damages don't mean much, right?

"But he's different!"

Zhang Peng pointed at Wang Yongxin, "He may not have broken the law, yet how many people exhausted themselves because of him? How many people died of overwork because of him? How many delivery workers and couriers were in accidents because of him?

"Those delivery workers risk their lives running red lights to deliver meals, but isn't it a result of him squeezing them dry?

"Sure, I'm lazy, but in today's society, can hard work really get you wealth?

"Is society like this because of my laziness and petty crimes, or because of those wealthy people up high?"

Wang Yongxin was stunned. Clearly, he hadn't expected Zhang Peng to suddenly start dragging him down.

And this drag was deadly, practically a knife to his vital spot.

"What nonsense are you talking about? Even if I wronged my employees and the delivery workers, how is that any of your business! A robber like you has no place to morally judge me," Wang Yongxin said, somewhat speechless.

Zhang Peng nodded, "That's where you rich people differ from us mongrels.

"The power of you rich folks lies in never admitting wrongdoing, no matter what mistake you've made!

"Because if you don't admit it, it's not wrong; admitting it makes it all your fault!

"At least I face legal punishment; what about you? The law has no hold over you!

"This second cell's game is called 'Hang a Capitalist.'

"You tell me, which one of us deserves to be hung on a lamp post more?"

Wang Yongxin was dumbfounded.

Ding Wenqiang sighed softly, walked to Cell 2, and looked at Wang Yongxin, "Go in."

Wang Yongxin wanted to say more, but ultimately he hesitated, reluctantly stepping into the cell.

Then he chuckled self-deprecatingly, "Capitalist on a lamp post. Well, at least it's a fitting end."

"Click!"

The locking sound was followed by the automatic activation of the cell's mechanism.

A mechanism resembling a streetlamp hung down slightly, with a thick hemp noose falling from above, and a not-so-thick square platform appearing below.

[The game begins in 30 seconds. Please insert your neck into the noose and maintain a suspended state for 10 minutes.]

[Earn 1000 minutes of visa time for each minute suspended. The mechanism automatically releases after 10 minutes.]

Standing on the platform and inserting his neck into the noose, the mechanism activated automatically.

The noose tightened upwards, the platform retracting beneath his feet, instantly stretching and lengthening his body.

Forced to tiptoe, Wang Yongxin grasped the noose to cushion his chin, desperately trying to create a safe space for his neck.

The game doesn't kill in the first attempt, but it leaves Wang Yongxin in extreme discomfort; any relaxation risks falling unconscious from being choked, leading to serious consequences.

...

As the game neared its end, the little speaker in front of Lin Sizhi started a new broadcast.

[Please cast a justice vote on the King's behavior.]

Another evaluation round; after a moment of thought, Lin Sizhi pressed '√'.

The countdown finished.

[Voting results: √√√√√√√√√√]

[Final Justice Rating: 100]

[Thank you for your evaluation!]

...

The ten-minute countdown ended, the mechanism reactivated, and the noose above slackened slightly, with the platform below lifting a bit.

Finally freed from the previous tension and stretch, Wang Yongxin quickly escaped the noose, collapsing to the ground.

"Hiss..."

His calves had cramped from being on his toes for so long, now involuntarily maintaining the previous posture, still twitching.

Enduring the pain, Wang Yongxin massaged his calves, but it proved futile in the short term.

He had no other choice. Though his calves had cramped midway through, he endured excruciating pain. Lacking support could have truly hanged him.

Touching the red mark on his neck, Wang Yongxin felt as though narrowly escaping death.

[10,000 minutes of visa time have been credited to the player.]

Compared to Cai Zhiyuan's game, which only awarded 150 minutes, this one seemed much more generous.

With a self-mocking smile, Wang Yongxin mused: "What's this called? With enough profit, the capitalist will even sell the rope to hang himself?

"The designer of this game sure has a sense of humor.

"But this is anything but fun."
