Mushroom Lord in the Underground City

Chapter 180: Expert Team Leader

"Edin, do you know Chis?"

The sudden emergence of words in Edin's mind made him stiffen in front of the table. It took him a full two seconds before his tense nerves relaxed.

"Chis?" Edin tried to keep his thoughts steady, quickly searching his memory for this abrupt term, but finally shook his head slowly. "Sorry, Boss, I haven't heard of it. Sounds like... the name of something? Or a place?"

"A type of demon." Lin Jun's voice echoed in the depths of his consciousness again, concise and certain.

"If it's a demon..." Edin's mind immediately became active. "The guild should have relevant information; I can go and collect it."

After thinking for a while, Lin Jun rejected Edin's proposal to collect information.

Chis... This thing is nine out of ten not a native demon in the Purple Crystal Dungeon.

If Edin rashly investigates it now, it would raise suspicion.

There is an "expert group" that will enter the Deep Area later, and if they happen to encounter this Chis below and coincidentally discover Edin had inquired mysteriously before the "expert group" went down...

How would Edin explain it?

On what grounds could he anticipate changes in the Deep Area?

Failing to explain could cause issues.

Edin, as Lin Jun's crucial undercover in the guild, couldn't be exposed due to such a minor incident.

Ultimately, Chis wasn't important to that degree.

The conversation on the consciousness layer ended, and the lingering "voice" disappeared completely, but Edin didn't move immediately.

He maintained his position, staring at the tweezers in his hand as if studying their shape.

The room became silent except for the occasional soft crackling of the fireplace and the distant, blurred market bustle outside the window.

Time flowed in the silence, and after a full five minutes, he seemed to break free from a deep contemplation, his shoulders slightly sagging.

Despite having communicated many times, he still clearly couldn't adapt to the way of communication with "Lord Puki."

Edin picked up the tweezers made from Star Wood Core that lay beside him again.

This material is naturally almost frictionlessly compatible with magic power, making it a superb choice for making precise magic items or engraving micro arrays.

However, Edin currently had other uses for it.

He laid his left palm up, revealing some tangled fungal threads pattern.

Two crystalline, semi-transparent fungal threads were tightly intertwined, forming a tiny hard knot.

Edin held his breath, aimed the cool, smooth tip of the Star Wood tweezers, and gently clasped, breaking the knot instantaneously.

He cautiously swapped the loose ends of the broken fungal threads, aligning them smoothly side by side.

Then, the tip of the tweezers tapped firmly on the cut surface, and a faint magic power conducted smoothly through the Star Wood.

Under the nourishment of magic power, the fungal threads reconnected seamlessly, as if they had never been broken.

The originally tangled hard knot disappeared, and that area of the fungal threads became smooth and flat.

The fungal threads, freely growing as part of his blood and flesh, grew chaotically—if not carefully mended, they formed these irregular protrusions on the skin surface.

These protrusion points generally posed no problem, but if unwittingly touched by someone else, the odd texture would be unmistakably revealed.

His Illusion Technique could perfectly deceive vision, making the skin appear smooth as usual but couldn't erase this tactile reality.

Thus, Edin could only be like a meticulous gardener, painstakingly "trimming," "reattaching," striving to straighten and smooth every fungal thread.

Ensuring that even if accidentally touched, it would merely feel like skin texture or barely noticeable ridges, without arousing suspicion.

Knock knock—

A knock sounded at the door.

"Who?"

"Mr. Edin, the materials you requested are ready and can be collected from the warehouse anytime." A guild staffer's voice came from outside the door, a young girl speaking cheerfully.

"Got it, I'll go fetch it."

At the moment his reply fell, Edin lifted his right hand. The center of his palm silently blossomed with a gentle, restrained magic glow, its luminance not irritating like flowing moonlight.

With a gentle sweep over his left palm, the traces of fungal threads vanished in an instant.

In the blink of an eye, presented before his eyes was a pair of flawlessly perfect hands, enough to amaze any artist.

Edin opened the door, outside stood a young girl staffer holding a registration book.

She appeared somewhat nervous, cheeks slightly red, her gaze slipping away swiftly upon meeting Edin's face, only to covertly peek again, like a curious young deer.

Edin's face retained a mild smile while he silently sighed in his heart.

If it were before, he wouldn't mind taking some time to savor the "taste of love" with this girl.

Now?

Ha, actively engaging with others is as reckless as tempting fate.

A life of abstinence had accumulated considerable stress within him, but only after acquiring those materials did he genuinely feel a sense of joy.

Chairman Fa'er, as a crucial propelling force behind his current predicament, it's impossible that Edin harbored no resentment.

But he had to admit, this young master was genuinely generous in rewarding those who worked for him, spending lavishly without restraint.

Citing the need to create items for the next operation, Edin requested a batch of materials.

Now receiving them, not only the quantity was not reduced, but exceeded his request by over twenty percent.

To this, Edin could only sigh, "Wealth truly is wonderful!"

Given Edin's current situation, it was naturally impossible to truly focus on dealing with the Boss, so these materials actually had another purpose.

Besides some materials used for diversion, the main part was for creating a kind of anti-reconnaissance item.

He certainly didn't want to stumble upon someone with reconnaissance skills one day and let them casually uncover his deadly secret...

As soon as he moved the pile of materials into the room, he was called out again.

This time, it was Shi Wu calling him.

"You mean the reply has arrived?" Edin asked.

Shi Wu nodded, "Waiting for you to read the letter."

The reply was naturally from Inanna, the letter of "aid" written following the Boss's request had yet to receive a follow-up, keeping him anxious for quite some time.

Unexpectedly, after nearly ten days, the reply arrives tardily.

Upon entering the conference room, Solalin was absent, yet the letter was placed on the table, addressed to himself, clearly unopened by the chairman or others.

Edin wasn't sure what kind of person Inanna was, but since the letter was sent in the joint name of himself and the guild, the Boss's existence was only hinted within; presumably, the reply wouldn't lack any disguise?

Opening it, half of his worry eased, for the letter contained no direct references to the "Boss," focusing entirely on the topic of "assistance."

However, as his gaze scanned the paper line by line, Edin's brows furrowed tighter and tighter, almost knotting into a twist.

"What does the letter say?" Fa'er asked.

"It says they will send people over to aid, but…"

"But what?"

"With the Duke's consent, she herself will personally bring the assistance, and will accompany the 'expert group,' and the letter explicitly mentions that the leader of this 'expert group' is... Elvyn Slyne..."

"Sword Saint!?"

"Master is coming!?"

Fa'er and Shi Wu exclaimed simultaneously.

The difference being Fa'er was excited; Shi Wu was terrified...
