Mushroom Lord in the Underground City

Chapter 186: Flanking Maneuver

In Cave No.8, connected to the frontline base, a colossal mushroom rose from the ground. Its scale was unprecedented, with the cap almost touching the ceiling of the cave, emitting a dim and constant fluorescence, making it the undisputed core of the entire space.

Puki, like soldiers molded from an assembly line, emerged one after another from the base of the giant mushroom.

As soon as they came out, they quickly assembled into a silent and orderly formation, then were dispatched to other caves to engage in the battle against Chis.

The defense of the entire cave was remarkably tight; in all the connected passages, Puki patrols shuttled back and forth on the ground, while the air was dense with bat Puki fluttering and searching every inch of space.

An Eye Worm with Refraction Invisibility Level 7, despite trying its best to conceal itself, was still forced into a corner by several bat Puki, which ultimately sensed its presence.

The next instant, the surrounding bat Puki pounced simultaneously, and after a short explosion, the Eye Worm was reduced to a pile of smoldering charred flesh.

Such situations had occurred multiple times over the past two days, with Chis persistently sending reconnaissance units to infiltrate, attempting to gather intelligence.

Today, it finally succeeded!

Just as the explosion distracted the majority of the bat Puki, another Eye Worm precisely seized the gap in the defense line, silently slipping through the otherwise airtight vigilance net and successfully infiltrating Cave No.8.

Then it saw it!

The unprecedented gigantic mushroom, and the continuous emergence of Puki produced by it.

Although this Eye Worm was quickly destroyed during the subsequent intense search, Chis had already obtained the crucial information it wanted — the nest of this mushroom was the decisive key point it had been desperately seeking to turn the tide of the entire battle!

Under the absolute dominion of Chis's unified will, its forces began to gather efficiently.

As a special attack unit significantly effective against Puki, the Evil Eye was naturally among them.

The choice of path to attack Cave No.8 was extremely limited; the adjacent Snake Cave had long been transformed into a fortress by Puki, and Chis had already experienced its toughness in the first round of pursuit battles.

Meanwhile, the adjacent Cave No.7 was a busy transportation hub, with Puki troops streaming in and out incessantly. Going this way was tantamount to directly engaging in a decisive battle with the main force of the Puki.

Other passages facing the Chis control area were also, without exception, tightly monitored by large numbers of Puki reconnaissance units. Forcing a breakthrough was not impossible, but the intention to attack would inevitably be exposed in advance, leading to swarming reinforcements from Puki in the surrounding caves, turning the sneak attack into a full-scale decisive battle.

What Chis wanted was to concentrate all its strength to strike the weak decisively, destroying Puki's production nest in one fell swoop.

Once Puki's subsequent forces were exhausted, it intended to slowly eliminate them through gradual attrition.

As for a full-force frontal showdown?

This was not what Chis wanted, not because it lacked confidence to win, but because it was too costly.

The Low Tier beetles could still propagate in swarms within days.

But as for mid-level units, like the Eye Worm, Six Claw, Clumsy Beast, etc., the time required for cultivation was measured in months.

In the past, mid-level units that could mature in just over a month had been its advantage, but against Puki, it became a disadvantage.

Look at Puki's production efficiency — emerging from the giant mushroom one after another without a pause!

Furthermore, the resource loss during battlefield corpse recovery was also a significant damage not to be ignored.

Now Chis only wanted to end this negative yield war at the minimum cost.

So, it decided to go around the back!

From the information sent back by the Eye Worm, it saw that Puki's reconnaissance patrol forces were almost entirely concentrated on the front facing the Chis control area, while the back passages were practically undefended, with only a few guards!

Surely, the Puki wouldn't expect Chis to make a roundabout attack from the back?

For the sake of secrecy, it also sent small units to harass or rather sacrifice themselves in other Puki caves, just to create a diversion.

And its main forces quietly passed through several caves, maneuvering in a large arc. It even engaged in battles with wild demons entrenched along the way twice, just to gain passage.

Now, after overcoming numerous obstacles, the fruit of victory was finally within reach!

Chis's forces advanced all the way to the end of the passage, only to be detected by the unprepared Puki sentries!

The counterattack was swift, and the Pukis attempted to block the mouth with firepower, but it was already too late.

The Evil Eyes led the charge, and the ghastly Petrification Beam turned the hastily assembled Puki into rigid stone sculptures in an instant!

The Six Claw, acting as the vanguard, scattered and charged at the arriving Puki, keeping them from clustering — as long as Puki didn't form a group, the threat was minimal!

Meanwhile, Chis's real main force surged toward the giant mushroom like a torrent.

Claws, acid, and bites — the base of the giant mushroom was peeled and destroyed layer by layer under the frenzied attack.

Finally, the last inner structure was exposed before Chis!

An eager Chis swung its claw fiercely, tearing apart the last layer of tough mycelium — "Clang!"

The claw snapped, and through the torn gap, inside were revealed... ten giant Puki clad in thick Rock Armor!

These Puki possessed extremely strong defenses; even the most fierce attacks by the Six Claw could only scratch some of the outer shell, failing to cause effective damage.

The Heavy Armor Puki moved with heavy steps, and smaller Chis could even be crushed directly under their feet.

A large amount of Hallucinogenic Spores surged out from the crevices of the Rock Armor, instantly dyeing the core area of the battlefield a sweet and cloying purple haze!

Several Six Claw joined forces in an attack, finally tearing through the outer Rock Armor of a Heavy Armor Puki with difficulty!

However, what was exposed was not the expected white mycelium, but another layer of dense Scale Armor shimmering with a cold, hard luster!

The Evil Eye redirected its gaze, focusing a ghastly white beam precisely on the breach!

The petrification effect did begin to spread... but under the dual reinforcement of the Heavy Armor Puki's Magic Resistance Level 6 and physical strength as high as 50 points, the petrification speed was extremely slow.

When most of the body of this Heavy Armor Puki finally turned into a statue and fell to the ground with a crash, a large number of Chis that did not manage to escape the range of the Hallucinogenic Spores had already fallen around.

Realizing something was amiss, Chis wanted to retreat, but not the way it came — instead, they decided to push forward!

Having consumed almost all its supplies to make this big detour, now it had no choice but to pass through the cave to get directly back to its own territory!

The Chis gave up entangling with the remaining Heavy Armor Puki, having discovered their weakness — slow movement, which meant they could be ignored.

However, as the Chis charged halfway, in most of the passages connected to Cave No.8, more or less the presence of Puki could be seen. Moreover, in all those teams, there were Heavy Armor Puki standing at the forefront like city walls...

...

Welcome to the grand showdown, foolish worms!
