"You obtained your own spell?"
In the captain's cabin, the main crew members looked at Ed with surprise and envy. Of course, Elena was the exception, she already possessed her own spell.
Seeing their envious gazes, Ed nodded with a smug air, pretending to be utterly genuine as he basked in their admiration. Only when he felt satisfied did he wave a hand and say shamelessly, "Don't be so envious yet. Once you know what my spell is, you probably won't envy me anymore."
"What kind of spell is it?" Jason couldn't help but ask. The look on Ed's face was too much to bear; he needed an immediate counter, or he might not sleep tonight.
Hearing this, Ed immediately raised his palm. A faint surge of magic flowed out. This time, it took only five seconds to guide it.
Runes appeared in his mind, and a palm-sized round mirror floated above his hand.
Everyone looked at the two-way mirror in his palm, then turned back to stare at Ed.
"And then?" Elena asked curiously.
Hearing her question, Ed gave everyone a look as if they were fools before stating the obvious: "Nothing. Just like that, it creates the mirror you want. Can't you see? It's just a simple mirror. What else did you expect? That I'd be able to enter another dimension or something?"
"…"
Hahaha!
Everyone burst out laughing, not caring about Ed's feelings in the least.
Andre wiped a tear from the corner of his eye, thought for a moment, and said, "Hmm, it's already quite remarkable that you were able to comprehend a spell on your first encounter with the treasure. That's an achievement in itself."
"Yeah, yeah," Elena chimed in, clenching her fist in encouragement. "The spell might seem strange to outsiders, but it's actually very suitable for you right now." She didn't want to discourage Ed further, fearing he might stop developing his treasure out of shame.
Hearing their words of comfort, Ed shook his head in disappointment, thinking that despite living with him for nearly a month, these people still didn't understand him at all.
"Don't worry, I'm not weak-willed. This spell might look useless to you all, but it's actually quite suitable for me. I've already thought of many ways to use it."
Hearing his confident words, everyone except Jason nodded in approval.
Bobby, however, was curious. As someone with a researcher's mindset, he carefully examined the mirror in Ed's hand. "Spells that you comprehend on your own are generally not weak, so don't be too discouraged. You just haven't unleashed its full potential yet."
Ed nodded; he was quite satisfied with the spell.
At this moment, Andre tapped the table in front of him. Then, looking at Ed and Jason, he said, "Now that you two are almost familiar with your Treasure, it's time to move on to more advanced training."
"Familiarize yourselves with your magic. The requirement is to be able to channel your magical energy to any part of your body within at least one second."
"As for learning spells, choose what you like and see if any suit you. After all, there aren't many choices. If you have any special spells, you can learn those too."
Then he looked at Bobby and Elena. "You two will be responsible for these tasks."
With that, Ed and Jason were dragged out by the two.
Elena said from the front, "We're not far from Sacred Armor Island, about three or four days away. Over the next few days, you must learn to channel your magic to the desired location within two seconds."
Bobby even took out two different books from the bookshelf next to the captain's cabin: A Compendium of Spells, two volumes. He handed them to Ed and Jason. "You two can pass these around, learn about the spells, and see which ones interest you."
After arranging their studies, and since it was almost noon, they immediately began magic control training.
Elena took a large pile of numbered patches from Bobby. The two then bared their upper bodies, each covered in these patches.
"When I call out a number, you must channel magic to the corresponding area on your body. If you're slow… hmph, you'll realize just how painful my training methods can be!" Elena stood before them, laughing harshly like a demoness. "Close your eyes and get ready to begin."
The two had barely closed their eyes when Elena called, "Number 3!"
The number 3 patches on both of their bodies were on the backs of their right hands. Ed and Jason immediately controlled their magic, channeling it in that direction.
"Slow!"
As soon as Elena finished speaking, a sharp pain shot through the area on the back of Ed's hand marked with number 3.
"Hiss!"
"Ready, next one. Number 6!"
"Slow!"
Both cried out in pain again.
"Number 2!"
This time, only Jason was slow, the lingering pain had distracted him. The area on Ed's hand marked with number 2 was quickly filled with magic. The number on the patch flashed with a faint light, indicating success.
"Ah!"
Jason cried out in pain again—poor guy, his concentration was completely shattered.
Hearing this, Ed couldn't help but turn to look at him, a gloating smile on his face.
"Number 7!"
Elena, seeing his smile, raised an eyebrow and called out again.
Ed quickly channeled his magic, but it was clearly not fast enough, especially when someone was deliberately trying to trip him up.
"Too slow!"
The stinging sensation returned.
Although Jason still hadn't succeeded this time either and got zapped as well, he turned back and smiled at Ed. Serves you right, you cocky bastard.
"Number 11."
"Too slow!"
"Ah!" ×2
…
As dusk approached and the sun sank completely below the horizon, the two lay exhausted on the deck. Their bodies were like boiled shrimp, slightly red skin emitting a faint steam.
There were no wounds where the patches had been; the sensation was purely a tactile, pain-like feedback.
It wasn't without gains, though. By the final stage, Ed could channel his magic to any part of his body within four seconds.
This sense of accomplishment was gratifying, but the residual pain made him want to retreat to his room and hide until he'd mastered everything the captain wanted him to learn. The beating had been too much to bear.
"Go down for dinner after you've rested. Uncle Matt will prepare specially made food for you," Elena said, squatting down beside Ed and smiling at the two. Her beautiful face was as captivating as ever, but if it weren't for her devilish deeds, Ed, who barely saw any women on the lonely sea, might have started entertaining ideas about her.
But because she was always their training instructor, rarely showed genuine care, and most often seemed to enjoy beating them, he had long ago blacklisted her from his potential partners. He might die alone, but he would never, ever have a romantic relationship with her, that was for sure. A woman who beat her lovers and wasn't gentle at all was not someone he wanted to share a bed with.
Anyway, back to the topic of food. Their time together had made Ed realize that Uncle Matt's position on the ship was essentially that of a key member. He could handle and prepare all sorts of targeted meals.
Depending on the ingredients, and with Vanessa's help, he could create dishes to help them recover and improve their health. Once, he even boasted that he could create a dish providing infinite stamina for an hour, but Ed felt he was talking nonsense.
People in this world were already quite powerful and tough, and those with magical energy in their bodies genuinely didn't tire easily. So even if they ate a random dish, having unlimited stamina for an hour wouldn't be abnormal.
After dinner, back in their room, it was already dark.
By the light of the lantern, Ed sat heavily on the edge of the bed, his gaze falling on the magic mirror on the bedside table. He couldn't help but reach for it.
"Should I rescue whoever's inside?"
Ed couldn't help but wonder. Before, when the other party had transmitted words directly into his brain, he'd never actually heard its voice, so he didn't even know if it was a man, a woman, or some kind of weird creature.
Previously, he definitely wouldn't have wanted to attempt a rescue until he had enough strength to feel confident. But surviving on the island last time was entirely thanks to the magic mirror's dream warning. Without it, Ed would surely have died in Nivek's attack.
Facing the moonlight streaming through the window, the back of the magic mirror shimmered faintly.
Ed placed the magic mirror back on the bedside table and lay down to rest. He'd think about it another time. The other party had been inside the mirror for who knows how long; a few more months wouldn't matter.
Gradually, sleepiness washed over him, and he closed his eyes.
…
Suddenly, Ed opened his eyes.
He immediately sat up, feeling the rocking of the ship on the sea. Pale moonlight streamed into the room through the window.
Ed stiffly turned his head and saw a figure sitting at the desk by the window, turning the pages of a book as if reading.
Then the figure turned toward Ed, who was now awake.
