Leon slept for 3 hours.
When he woke up, he saw Daren standing by the side of the window, quietly watching outside like he was waiting for something.
Daren's lack of action and the fact that he slept peacefully for 3 hours without Daren waking him up meant one thing. 'It hasn't erupted yet'.
He looked at his smartphone to check the time.
10:12am, no sign of the terrorists.
Leon stood up and attracted Daren's attention. "I want to return to the caravan to continue my work, I can't afford to stay idle".
He quickly went to the bathroom to wash his face and get prepared but just as he was about to leave, he hesitated as he looked at Daren.
"I don't feel comfortable leaving you on your own," Leon said in a flat tone that showed that he was not joking. "You're close to me, I don't know if the terrorists will target you due to that".
Daren nodded calmly. "I understand, I'll follow you".
Hearing that, Leon heaved a sigh of relief.
Daren understood his situation perfectly, but for him, it was still hard to accept the reality that the same Leon whom he protected a few weeks back was now the same person protecting him.
'How times change'. He thought.
He just couldn't fathom Leon's growth speed.
Leon picked up his leather bag and walked out of the hotel room with his friend following behind him.
Despite Major Roshfield's speech, the city still looked subdued. There was less traffic than usual as more people stayed at home today.
Personally, Leon felt that staying at home was a smart decision. Whatever the terrorists had planned for today, staying inside would likely insulate you from the damage.
Along the way to the caravan, they walked past a new makeshift military barrack where soldiers camped, waiting for any terrorist activity.
The sight of them gave Leon more confidence.
Within a few minutes, they arrived back at the caravan and Leon immediately dove back into his work.
Construct!
Even with the help of his System's construction speed, completing his biggest construction project was still going to take days.
The only uncertainty was how many days exactly it was going to take.
…
2:03pm, still no sign of the terrorists.
Compton District was just as busy as any other day of the week.
Leon led Daren out of the caravan as they walked through the streets of Compton District, approaching the nearest restaurant to eat.
Inside, Leon paid for a sumptuous meal that they both ate.
He wasn't surprised that Sergeant Tyla didn't have time to visit him today. With everything that was going on, if she still visited, he would have suspected that she was one of the traitors in the Gene Army.
This was a sensitive period for the city.
After eating, Leon rested for 20 minutes and then he returned to his caravan and continued working.
Even as he worked, he thought. 'I wonder when the terrorists will attack'.
'Do they even have the guts to attack after all these preparations by the Gene Army?' He had his doubts.
Personally, if he was the terrorists, he would cancel all his plans immediately but Leon knew that intelligence was really not a big trait of religious fanatics.
If they still attacked in the current state of the city though, then they were far more stupid and extreme than he feared.
'Let's see what happens'.
…
5:30pm, still no sign of the terrorists.
Leon began feeling truly uneasy.
He felt his mind and body churning with quiet adrenaline that refused to settle, this was because of the significance of today.
Leon didn't know the Demon of Ozempic personally but from the footage that he'd watched of the man and judging from how they operated, he felt like he had a basic profile of his personality already.
Would the Demon of Ozempic really give up just like that? He wasn't sure.
Unable to continue, he finally paused from his work, leaving the still incomplete robot by the corner of the caravan where it was as he looked at Daren who quietly sat on the other side of the caravan.
Daren also looked at him. "Can't focus?"
Leon massaged his forehead. "I can't get my head to focus," he leaned back on the chair. "I keep thinking about the terrorists… when will they attack? Will they attack? And if they attack, who will be their first target?"
"I keep on remembering the massacre 5 days ago".
"F*ck!" He groaned and pressed his forehead. "I'm thinking of so many things that I just can't focus on what I'm doing".
Daren wasn't surprised, he nodded calmly. "This is war," he sighed and looked at the ceiling of the caravan. "It's hard to focus on anything apart from violence and sex during wartime".
Leon's lips twitched, thinking. 'You and sex'.
He stood up and tried to return to continue working but his head was just not into it, and so he decided to stop working for today.
"Let's go back to the hotel, I need to clear my head".
"Ok".
This time, as they returned to the hotel, Leon deliberately walked at a slower pace than normal so he could savor and take in the sights of the city more. Maybe it would help him relax.
He observed the buildings around him, the bars, the cafes, and the distant bustling market. He glanced up at the stormy neon skyline, then he observed the holographic brown and neon holo-signboards around the street.
Daren quietly followed behind him.
'Maybe the Major's deterrence really worked'. He thought as he walked, but then he countered it. 'Is the Extremist Faction really that easily intimidated?'
Leon was conflicted, he didn't know what to believe. But in hindsight, using the word 'easily' was an understatement.
Despite the fact that he was not the one that the Major directed her ire and threat at, Leon still felt chills when he remembered her daring Lucian to attack during the live video.
He shrugged and looked towards the distant Grand Deluxe Hotel, his mood now feeling a bit more relaxed. He looked around in a bid to cross the busy road.
In that moment though, his keen Ascended senses noticed someone looking at him. He turned his head to the side and over a dozen meters from him, he saw a mature middle-aged Geneform holding a flower bouquet like he was going to propose to his fiancée.
This man seemed to have Pig DNA in him as he had an exaggerated head shape and nose.
Seeing him look his way, the man flashed an excited smile at him.
'Oh, another Thomas Riley fan?'
Leon kept his composure, remembering to maintain Thomas Riley's persona as he coldly nodded to acknowledge the man before continuing to walk towards the hotel.
But as he walked, for some reason, he felt a sudden hunch to look at the man again. Something didn't add up.
'He shouldn't have recognized me'.
'My disguise has gotten better since yesterday. In this face cap, my new clothes and Tyla's makeup, people rarely recognize me in the streets anymore, so how did he recognize me all the way from that side?'
He frowned and turned to look at the man.
He saw that he was walking towards the distant bustling market. 'He intends to buy more things for his fiancée?' He thought.
Curious, he continued watching the man.
The man soon arrived in front of the market. He greeted the first 2 people that he saw in an amiable manner.
The second person was a mature middle-aged woman with 2 babies, they were twins. She strapped one of them to her back, while she cradled the other one on her hand.
The one strapped to her back was playfully active without his mother's knowledge.
"Bu bwa bah…," he babbled innocently, playing with the air.
Hearing him babble, the man was smitten by his cuteness as he did a smiley face and played with the baby as the mother walked past him.
Watching them from afar, Leon was infected by the cuteness as he smiled. 'Is his fiancée pregnant?'
But then suddenly, the man turned around and looked directly at Leon who was far from him.
They were separated by more than 200 meters.
Leon frowned. 'What's he on about…?'
Leon saw the man calmly dip his hand into the flower bouquet and pull something, then the smile on his face suddenly disappeared, morphing into a look of pure malice and indignant hatred.
BADUMP!
Leon's heart skipped a beat but it was too late.
"REPENT OR DIE!" He screamed at the top of his lungs, startling the other people in the market that were beside him.
Ignoring the people who ignorantly glared at him in annoyance, he hugged the flower bouquet tightly to his body and chanted in a zealous and fanatical manner.
"Gud er større!"
"Gud er større!"
The people surrounding him were shocked, then…
KABOOMMMMMMM!
The flower bouquet detonated!
It was a bomb, and the man just committed suicide!
The entire front side of the bustling market went up in flames, consuming all the customers, goods and stall in the vicinity, including the mother of the twin babies, including the twin babies!
"…!"
Leon felt like his brain just short-circuited.
He froze in place. 'What just happened…?'
'T-that looked like a civilian… he didn't wear the familiar black paramilitary armor… he didn't wear the insectile mask…'
'Wait, they've changed style? They no longer blatantly wear their black paramilitary armor? They no longer flaunt their identity?'
Amid his thoughts, the loud sound of wailing coming from the direction of the market suddenly woke him out of his reverie.
Leon squinted and looked and his eyes instantly turned red. Beside him, Daren was still dazed by what just happened.
"Arghhh…!" Loud screams of pain, terror, and panic came from the direction of the market.
Staring into the burning flames and hearing the screams of pain, Leon's felt like a switch was flipped in his head as his brain abstracted all other information, leaving only a single sound inside.
'Bu bwa bah…' the babbling of the baby.
"F*CKKKKKK!" He screamed loudly in pain and rage, then he moved, charging towards the market.
He barely moved when his enhanced senses heard another familiar sound.
"Gud er større!"
Leon paused, alarmed, and then…
KABOOM!
This time, it came from up.
Leon quickly looked up and saw a public airbus filled with dozens of passengers suddenly explode in the sky!
'Ahhh…!' His heart winced in pain, his mind flooded with rage.
"Watch out!" Behind him, Daren screamed and suddenly dove towards him, pushing him aside.
Leon managed to look just in time to see one of the civilians who stood by the side of the road. He saw him since, but there was nothing noteworthy about the man so he ignored him.
To him, he was just another pedestrian standing by the side of the road.
Now, the man's face suddenly morphed into an expression filled with religious zeal and malice for the people around him as he pulled his jacket up to reveal a ticking time bomb.
"…" Leon couldn't react.
