Dante walked with Ruby toward the tunnel with a heavy heart.
She was humming and moving excitedly, her eyes sparkling at the thought of finding the treasures.
As for Dante, he could only think about Greed's words.
He truly did so much. He fought countless beasts and protected her from all harm. He created the misfortune compass. He also killed a Rank 2 beast.
Was it truly a sin to be a bit greedy now?
'But does that mean abandoning her while she's in the White Abyss?'
Ruby was indeed lucky, one of the luckiest people he had ever seen, but…
Would that be enough to let her survive alone?
'Likely not.'
No matter how lucky she was. Luck was the concept of the uncertainty itself.
She could have died.
And Dante would have blamed himself for that. He wasn't only a human from Earth, but he was also only 16. He was too young to stop feeling guilty and become cold to others, even after everything he had faced in this world.
It was like the feeling you might face when you do not feed a cat and find it dead the next day.
You had no responsibility to save the cat.
But you could have saved it!
You might wish to return in time to feed the cat. You might hate yourself for not taking it home. You might hate the other people who also ignored it.
Human emotions and morals didn't have to make sense. They just existed.
Dante couldn't let Ruby die, even if it wouldn't be his fault, even if what Greed said was right, even if it was the most logical thing to do.
Something inside him prevented him from doing that, even though a part of him—maybe his greedy nature or the corruption—wanted him to prioritise himself. He knew that he was foolish and stupid, but he couldn't help it.
'Argh, whatever. I'm sure she wouldn't do anything even if she found out that I'm a demonic dragon. I mean, there are many demons and dragons out there. But someone like her who can find such opportunities? If my transmigration and Crown of Existence were ignored, I'm not as special as her.'
Dante was certain that using her ability as a negotiation card could be a great move to keep her quiet. After all, if someone found out about Dante, they'd only try to kill him while expecting some losses. But Ruby? They would use her until her death.
He started harvesting the core of the wyrm, while Ruby harvested the others. He now had 251 Rank 2 cores.
"Will we go in now?" Ruby asked excitedly while looking at the gate wide open.
She didn't ask Dante about why it was open. Why would she say anything? She only guessed that he wanted to test it before bringing her here.
"Ruby…" Dante inhaled deeply and looked into Ruby's eyes: "Whatever happens there must stay secret."
"Yes, yes, yes." Ruby nodded without hesitation: "It has something to do with a kind of secret — I understand."
Letting out a sigh, Dante finally took the first step into the corridor.
Tak!
The sound of his step echoed through the corridor, but nothing happened.
Sweating heavily, he took the second step.
Tak!
Both of Dante's feet were now inside. Still, nothing happened.
He checked his misfortune and Ruby's luck. His misfortune was now 1% of the original size while still growing in a stable way.
As for Ruby, nothing happened to her luck. Everything was as before.
He took a few more steps and told Ruby that she could probably follow him safely. She nervously listened to him and took a few slow steps until she stood behind Dante.
"Should we move faster?" Ruby asked.
"No, it's better to stay cautious." Dante shook his head before holding her hand and continuing to move forward, his steps slow and steady.
He didn't want to test whether this place would suddenly attack anyone who wasn't a demonic dragon. It was better to keep direct contact with Ruby just in case there was something that would target any strangers.
The corridor wasn't dark. It was illuminated with some glowing purple lines that decorated the ceiling and the walls.
"Wait!" Ruby suddenly stopped and pulled Dante's hand, getting his attention.
He froze as he saw her looking back with terror in her eyes. Panicking, he turned around, only for the terror to overwhelm his emotions.
'How?!'
The gate was closed.
It didn't even make any sound. They didn't notice anything at all.
Dante gulped and continued forward, pulling Ruby with him: "I'm sure there is another exit…"
"Y-yes." Ruby followed after him.
After 30 minutes of relentless walking, the corridor began narrowing.
"Why is it like this?"
"I have no idea."
After 20 more minutes, they couldn't stand next to each other. Ruby had to follow him closely from behind, still holding his hand firmly as if her life depended on it.
'Maybe my life really depends on it…'
And after 5 more minutes, Dante could barely fit his body in the corridor. Ruby even had to abandon her large backpack in order to keep walking.
'What the hell is this?! At this rate, I might have to move as a shadow.'
Thankfully, Dante didn't have to as, after a few seconds, he reached a wide room.
The room wasn't empty. It had two sets of armor that were made of the same onyx-like material and decorated with the same purple lines.
They held two giant swords, giving them the appearance of mighty knights, and there was a third knight similar to them but larger in size, but it had two purple crystals on its armor and one on its sword.
'Is… is this thing looking at me?' Dante wondered, noticing two purple orbs inside the helmet.

Dante couldn't see any luck on them, but just to be safe, he used his silver eye while moving away, giving Ruby a path to enter the room.
The normal knights: 100.
The giant knight: 222.
Dante: "..."
