Chapter 376: Slowly Dying

Yeah, slowly dying isn't exactly fine, but I'll move past it. The look in his eyes, there's hardly any glimmer to them, like he doesn't have anything left to live for.

"From what I know, the Monsters conquered this world about two centuries ago," I recalled thoughtfully.

"Has it really been that long? There was a group of us that continued fighting even after the Monsters emerged victorious, but it was a futile effort. My comrades were killed, one by one, until I was the last one left.

The only reason I've survived this long is because one of my comrades, who possessed a powerful enchanting ability, enchanted this entire forest before he died...he fueled the Enchantment with his own life force, and as a result, it has yet to fade away, even after all this time.

The Enchantment aids those who seek to hide in this place. Any who try to search for them will have their sense of direction and perception skewed, it would be almost impossible to find someone in this forest who does not want to be found. Has it not seemed strange to you, how easily you have been able to hide?"

Huh. Well, that explains a lot.

"Yeah, I just sort of assumed the Demon Lord's forces are hopelessly bad at finding people," I responded with a chuckle.

"That could be a contributing factor, I suppose. This Enchantment, it is the only reason why I have not given up. Throwing away my life feels disrespectful to my comrade's dying effort to protect me, so I have persisted.

But that will not last much longer...I have been launching attacks against the Demon Lord's forces from time to time, to at least be a minor annoyance to those bastards.

But I was quite reckless with many of my attacks, I made no effort to conserve my Mana, and even utilized my own life force to fuel my attacks at times.

As a result, my body is in shambles, I've drastically reduced my own lifespan, I believe I will likely be dead within half a decade, at most. Perhaps even sooner...any real exertion, be it physical or Magical, takes a heavy toll on me," He sighed wistfully.

Sounds like he's been on a self-destructive rampage for about two centuries, can't say I blame him though.

Mostly, I'm just surprised he's survived this long.

"I see, that must have been rough. Oh, bet you haven't had any good food in a while," I remarked, before making copies of several options I had stored in Treasury.

"Don't bother, I am not particularly interested in-...," He began indifferently, before trailing off as he caught a whiff of the food, gulping slightly as his stomach rumbled.

I'd set out fried chicken strips, sliced steak, fries, nuggets, cheeseburgers, spring rolls and samosas.

I know, not exactly the most healthy options, but he's clearly had a really rough time of things, he could use something nice.

And everyone knows that the unhealthiest foods are the tastiest foods, so yeah.

I should get some drinks too, and think of which desserts to give him after.

"Go on, dig in," I remarked with a smile, as he eyed the food with a gleam in his eyes.

"W-Well, I suppose I am rather hungry, and it would not be right to let this food go to waste, so...," He muttered, before picking up a chicken strip and taking a bite, his eyes widening as a crunch rang out.

He was quick to take a second bite, and a third, the strip disappearing in seconds, before he picked up another one.

I opened the container of sauce, prompting him to dip into it, before taking another bite.

The look in his eyes was a lot brighter as he proceeded to dig into the various options I'd set before him.

I took out some soda and fruit juices too, sauce and grease smeared around his mouth as he ravenously wolfed it all down.

"Thish ish incredible, I have never had food thish good before! The meat ish sho flavorful, the texshture absholutely delightful!" He spoke with his mouth full, before chugging down a lime and kiwi juice, adding as he let out a content sigh, "My, so refreshing!"

Yeah, he definitely needed this. I should give him some clothes too, once he's done eating. The food's disappearing real fast, seems he's enjoying it quite a bit.

"Want more?" I inquired with a grin, as he finished off all the food I'd set out.

"Do you really have even more food to spare? And how is it that all of this was warm, as if freshly cooked?"

"To put it simply, I can preserve food and create unlimited copies."

"What? I have never heard of such Magic, how useful," He remarked in fascination, before adding, "Well, if that's the case, then yes, I would like more."

"Cool, let's go with something sweet this time," I suggested, before making copies of the cookie fries from Decadence, along with donuts, brownies, churros, red velvet cake and chocolate mousse.

"So sweet! I have never tasted such rich sweetness before," He responded as he bit into a donut, with chocolate on top and a custard filling.

"Think I've got the general gist of your story now, we can go more in-depth about it later, if you're okay with that. But for now, if you've got any questions for me, go ahead."

"You mentioned that you are not from this world, what exactly does that mean?" He asked me curiously.

"Huh, I guess that means you don't know. For about the last one hundred and twenty years, the Demon Lord has been invading another world, the world I come from.

And I happened to catch his eye, and he had one of his Generals bring me to this world for some reason. I managed to avoid getting captured, and now I'm trying to get back to my world," I explained, a bewildered look on his face as he munched on a churro.

Yeah, that's a fair reaction.
