That dawn, as drizzling rain slammed against the glass of the closed window, strange movement took place in Kai's room.
On his bed, he lay on his back, his arms crossed behind his head, his eyes closed. "Do I need to counter back when someone tries to bully me there?" he whispered, then gasped softly.
He cracked his eyes open, stared at the drops streaking down the other side of the glass, then looked back at the shadowy being standing by the left side of his bed.
"I have to try so I don't hurt anyone," he said. Something like a smile appeared on the being's face. Kai stood up, walked to the window, then opened it.
Chilled air blasted him, wetting his face, neck, and chest. "This weather is good," he said, smiled, then placed his palms on the window stool.
As the cold air kept snaking through his hair, the face of a blue-haired lady resurfaced in his mind. The face of Ayra, his mother.
'Mom,' he said in a saddened voice in his thoughts, then closed his eyes. There, beside the blue-haired lady, he saw another man standing like a god he had no idea of.
In an instant, he cracked his eyes open the moment the being stretched his arm toward him, as if summoning something hidden in him to come back to life.
Though it was just in his head, he felt a strange energy moving through his bones. "What's happening to my body?" he asked, turning a sharp gaze to the shadowy being.
Strangely, the shadowy being with which he had just communicated a few minutes ago wasn't there.
"What's going on?" He turned a sharp gaze toward the window and stared at the sky like it was the sole pillar that knew what he didn't.
After two hours, an alarm rang from the clock hanging at the top of his bed. "It's already 5:30 a.m.?" he asked himself, then dashed into the bathroom, yawning. 'I can't sleep again, else I will be late.'
After a few minutes, he exited, walked to the mirror at the side of his wardrobe. He stared at his clean body, his face, his hair, then walked to the wardrobe.
"Since I wasn't given any uniform, which outfit will be best for a first impression in the college?" He grabbed his chin, then scratched it, staring at the open wardrobe.
"Let's go with the usual." He smiled, picked up the black long-sleeve shirt, then the jeans trousers, and wore them.
He walked back to the mirror, looked at his reflection as he combed his hair.
…
"Kai!" Lena shouted as she walked past Kai's door. "Are you ready?"
Instead of responding, Kai opened the door and exited.
Lena stared at him as if he was mad, then giggled. "Are you going to the school in this?" She pointed a finger at the outfit, laughing.
"Is it bad?" Kai asked, confusion filling him whole.
"Didn't look through the mirror?" Lena teased. She stood there, looked at him for a while, then walked to the couch in the hall.
"Should I change? And what is wrong with this? I have been wearing it always, and I haven't heard any comments on it during those days. So why?"
He walked back inside, changed, and wore the official black trousers and a polo shirt, then exited the room.
"How do you feel wearing this?" Lena asked, a satisfying smile shimmering on her face.
The two stood there for a while, then exited the building when the clock clicked to 7:30 a.m.
"If we always wait for her, you will be late," Lena said, started the engine, then drove Kai off the nurse's estate.
"Ooh, why?!" she screamed under her breath when they joined the traffic highway.
Car horn sounds filled the highway as the front cars moved like tortoises.
"What at all is causing this traffic?" Lena slammed her finger on the horn button while the tires of the car moved slowly.
Thirty minutes after she reached the exit point of the highway, a dissatisfying feeling slammed into her.
"Ahhhh!" she screamed. "Who will do this?" She ranted at the car that had been parked in the middle of the road.
She stepped on the accelerator as soon as she shifted her gaze onto the digital clock. '8:00?! Damn, Kai is already late.'
The car moved like a time machine on the road, reeling past security vehicles checking speed limits like a lightning strike.
"Hurry up and go," she instructed as she drifted a 360 in the parking lot of Vamus College.
Just as Kai stepped into the main door of the lecture block, a bell rang, vibrating faintly through the ground.
He weaved through the crowded hallway, his heart beating a little faster than usual.
After a few minutes, he lowered his steps when he saw the door where his first class was appointed to take place.
"You're late."
Kai froze at the classroom door, sweat streaming down his arms.
A tall man with silver-rimmed glasses swung the door open and looked down at the boy. "Who are you?"
"I am K—" he paused, swallowed hard, then straightened himself. "I am Yung Chin K."
The professor sighed. "Yung Chin, or Yung Chin K?" he asked, frowning. "I hate nonsense. Did you add the K to it, or is it part of it?"
The professor ranted furiously, then pointed a finger at a seat at the back of the class. "Go to the back row."
Kai slipped from the man's side and entered. Murmurs followed him like ripples on water as he walked toward the appointed seat.
He felt eyes on his back as he moved past the already seated students.
A girl leaned over and asked in a low voice, "You're the new one, right?"
Kai stared at her blossoming eyes, then nodded.
"I'm Tessa."
'Tessa.' The name rang over and over in his mind, his eyes unflinching as they locked onto hers.
"Kai."
The girl smiled. "What about the name on your ID?" She squeezed her face.
"Call me Kai. That's the K."
The girl opened her mouth like a fish breathing, then nodded.
"Welcome to the Hunter Ethic and Urban Survival Class," Tessa said, stretching her right arm forward.
Kai stretched his, shook her hand, then smiled. Around Tessa, Kai saw a golden glow.
Also, her vibration seemed to be distinct from the remaining students, including the professor, whose own was black.
