A Bumpy Road to Power

Chapter 376: A Glimmer in the Darkness

"What's even more tragic is that some people, even though they don't have power, still manage to leverage money and connections to climb the social ladder, acting more arrogantly than those who actually possess power."

Dirk Carter finished saying this.

Rose Forrest said with some sympathy, "It's been like this since ancient times. So what? One person's strength alone can't change it."

Dirk nodded.

He said, "Yes, my strength alone can't change much. However, in the darkness, there should always be someone to light a lamp, right? I know that many storms are eager to snuff out this light. They're afraid of it, but I keep thinking there must be many people who will find the right path under this dim guidance."

Rose sighed deeply.

She said, "Dirk, just go ahead and do what you need to do. My sister and I will always silently support you from behind."

Dirk was a bit stunned.

He asked, "Shouldn't I be the one standing behind you, silently pushing you forward?"

Rose didn't catch on at first.

Suddenly, her face turned a deep red.

She playfully scolded, "What time is it now? You're still joking around like this?"

"No matter what time it is, I should always laugh out loud. If I were to cry, wouldn't those bastards secretly celebrate?"

"Anyway, I can't win an argument with you..."

Rose pouted and said.

Just then.

The phone rang.

It was Arlo Yarbrough calling.

He told Dirk that he indeed found someone named Vera Yule.

Coincidentally, she was at Hospital No. 3.

When they arrived at the hospital.

Arlo was already waiting at the entrance.

Besides him, there was also another person, Zoey Moss, whom Dirk had called in.

As soon as Dirk got out of the car, he asked, "How's it going?"

Arlo said, "I checked her medical records: perineal lacerations, multiple soft tissue contusions all over, and signs of cigarette burns on her chest. Her emotions are very unstable. If I hadn't insisted on staying, her brother was about to discharge her."

Dirk nodded.

He asked, "Did you check her family situation?"

Arlo said, "Yes, they're from Hannon State. The siblings came to our city to work. Her brother, Justin Yule, works as a carpenter at a construction site, while Vera works as a hostess at a restaurant. The money they earn is sent home regularly, as they have a sick father and a young brother who need financial support."

Another pair of unfortunate souls.

Dirk felt a twinge of pain in his heart.

He asked, "Did you report it to the police?"

Arlo said, "When she was brought in, the hospital followed standard procedure and reported it, but Vera didn't dare to say anything. Without her statements, the police couldn't do anything, and it ended up unresolved."

"Alright, I understand."

Dirk nodded.

He led Rose and Zoey to the ward.

They looked inside through the glass door of the ward.

A young man dressed ordinarily was crouching on the ground, covering his face and crying.

On the hospital bed, Vera Yule, who was originally very pretty, looked pale and weak, her face showing signs of depression as she stared blankly at the ceiling.

"Knock, knock, knock."

Dirk knocked on the door.

The noise did not catch Vera's attention; she didn't seem to care about what was happening outside.

But Justin, crouching on the ground, wiped his tears and stood up.

Arlo opened the door.

Before he could say a word.

Justin eagerly said, "Doctor, my sister is fine now; can she be discharged?"

Arlo frowned.

He said, "Currently, there aren't any major issues, but we need to observe her a bit more."

"But... sigh..."

Justin sighed.

He didn't say the rest.

Arlo could naturally understand his concerns.

He said, "Mr. Yule, I understand you're worried about the hospitalization costs, but you don't need to worry now. Our hospital has partnered companies for assistance. Let me introduce you: this is Zoey Moss, the owner of Savor Pavilion Catering Co. Her company will cover this hospitalization fee for your sister."

With Arlo's introduction.

Zoey stepped forward.

Justin was taken aback.

Perhaps he had never heard of such a good thing.

Zoey took out five stacks of cash, a total of 50,000, from her handbag.

She handed it to Justin.

She said, "Mr. Yule, use this money for your sister's treatment."

Seeing the money.

Justin finally believed it.

Tears began to flow again.

His hands trembled as he took the money.

At this moment, Dirk stepped forward.

He said softly, "Mr. Yule, could you step outside for a moment? We want to discuss some follow-up matters with you."

Justin looked worriedly at Vera on the bed.

Arlo quickly said, "Rest assured, Mr. Yule. I will keep an eye on her."

With this assurance.

Justin nodded and followed Dirk, Zoey, and the others to the corridor outside.

"Mr. Yule, this sum of money is for your sister's treatment. If you encounter any difficulties in work or life in the future, our company will try our best to offer help. Our manager also mentioned that once your sister recovers, she can come work at Savor Pavilion. The salary will definitely be higher than at the previous restaurant, and we'll ensure her safety."

These words.

Brought Justin to tears of joy.

He held Dirk's hand and thanked him repeatedly.

Dirk knew that his guard had finally lowered.

He said, "Regarding the harm your sister suffered, our company decided to hire professional lawyers to press charges. Mr. Yule, do you have any leads you could provide?"

Upon hearing this.

Justin became anxious.

He quickly waved his hand and said, "No need, really no need. We are just ordinary people. We can't fight against those wealthy ones. When they sent my sister over, they already warned her that if we dared to reveal even a word to the police, we couldn't stay in Ardmore. My sister and I honestly don't dare provoke them."

Seeing his anxious look.

Dirk nodded.

He said, "Alright, since that's the case, we won't bring it up for now. Let your sister recuperate first."

Just as he finished speaking.

Rose came running over in a hurry.

She glanced at Dirk.

Dirk asked, "What's going on?"

Rose leaned in close to Dirk's ear and whispered a few words.

Dirk nodded and said, "Okay, understood."

Returning to the ward's entrance.

He saw four police officers standing in the corridor.

Two men and two women.

Arlo was standing at the door, discussing something with them.

"What's going on?"

Dirk approached Arlo and asked.

Arlo said, "These officers are from the Huxley Police Station. They said they came to arrest Vera Yule."

"Oh? Why?"

Dirk asked.

The leading officer said, "We received a report from Highpine Restaurant stating that Vera Yule, while working as a hostess, repeatedly stole money from customers, and the amount is substantial, so we are taking her back for questioning according to the law."

"Repeated stealing? Why didn't you report it earlier? Why wait until she's hospitalized?"

Dirk asked.

A nearby officer seemed a bit impatient.

He sneered, "Who are you? Do you have any right to interfere with police duties? Move aside, or I'll charge you with obstruction of justice!"

Dirk hesitated.

He laughed and said, "Officer, you're quite imposing. Am I obstructing justice just by asking a few questions? Why don't you just handcuff me then?"

Dirk extended his hand.

"You think I don't dare?"

The officer said as he reached for his handcuffs at his waist.

But was stopped by the lead officer.

He sternly asked Dirk, "Who are you to her?"

"I'm not related to her."

Dirk replied.

The agitated officer got angry when he heard this.

He pointed at Dirk's face and shouted, "If you're not related, then what are you babbling about? Get out of the way!"
