A Bumpy Road to Power

Chapter 385: Conclusive Evidence

After the earlier commotion.

Bartel Perry didn't dare to put handcuffs on Dirk Carter.

Seeing Dirk Carter was about to be taken into the detention room.

Anselm Hall said unhappily, "Chief Perry, I've brought the person to you, which is already giving your police station face. If you take Comrade Carter into the detention room, you're not giving us at customs any face. After all, Carter is our deputy commissioner at customs. Why don't you show me the evidence? If you can truly confirm Carter's guilt, I'll leave without another word, how about that?"

It seemed he couldn't make the decision.

Bartel Perry glanced at Chadric Gates, who had come along.

Seeing that Chadric Gates said nothing.

He nodded, saying, "Alright, let's go to the conference room then."

Under Bartel Perry's lead, the group proceeded with great momentum into the conference room.

Bartel Perry said to Chadric Gates, "Mayor Gates, please take the head seat!"

Chadric Gates waved his hand, saying, "It's your normal procedure next, I won't interfere; I'll just sit on the side and listen."

Chadric Gates was also a smart man.

Before the final result was confirmed, he wanted to stay out of it.

This way, even if something went wrong in the middle, it had nothing to do with him.

Just as everyone was about to take their seats.

A voice suddenly came from the entrance: "Hello, Secretary Woods."

Secretary Woods?

Where did Secretary Woods come from within the police station?

Bartel Perry glanced out.

He immediately stood upright and saluted in one smooth motion, shouting loudly, "Hello, Secretary Woods."

In front of them was none other than Yolanda Woods.

Yolanda Woods, hands behind her back, entered the conference room and saw Chadric Gates sitting in the corner, smiling as she said, "Oh, the station is quite lively today, and Mayor Gates is here too? Didn't I hear that Mayor Gates went to customs for research? How come you ended up here at the station?"

Chadric Gates never quite got along with Yolanda Woods.

He was previously overshadowed by her.

Now that he was the mayor.

He naturally had nothing to fear anymore.

He asked, "Comrade Woods, do you mean I need to report to you wherever I go?"

"Naturally not, Mayor Gates is a leader now,"

Yolanda Woods said with a tone neither warm nor cold.

Chadric Gates snorted coldly, "Then why is Secretary Woods at the station as well?"

"Oh, I'm just passing by. I saw Bartel Perry bringing Commissioner Carter back at the entrance, so I wanted to come and see what's going on."

"Secretary Woods is really concerned, isn't he?"

Chadric Gates sneered.

Yolanda Woods was not angered.

She pulled a chair over in the corner and sat down.

She said, "Gotta learn from Mayor Gates; Mayor Gates attends to every detail, I have to study well so I can progress in the future."

The verbal exchange was sharp and confrontational.

It seemed like mere chatter between the two.

But their words were already full of hidden daggers.

Yolanda Woods' sudden appearance made Chadric Gates more vigilant.

He originally intended to stay out of it, observing how things unfold, but now, he thought differently. After all, Yolanda Woods' presence was indeed strange.

"Leaders, we are ready to begin,"

Bartel Perry said to Chadric Gates.

Chadric Gates waved his hand, saying, "Alright, go ahead."

Bartel Perry nodded.

He turned on the computer.

Then, a scene appeared on the big screen.

It was Dirk Carter appearing at The Chevalier Grand Hotel.

He brought Ewan Forrest and Cecelia Forrest out of the elevator, stopping at the door of room 333.

Then.

Dirk Carter took a few steps back, sprinted, and directly kicked the door open.

At this point, the footage stopped.

Bartel Perry said, "Yesterday afternoon, we received the victim's report. The victim claimed that the Deputy Commissioner of Ardmore City's Customs, Comrade Dirk Carter, forcibly broke into his room, assaulted him, and scalded his genitals with hot water. According to the injury assessment from the hospital, the victim's genitals have suffered severe damage, reaching the level of serious injury."

Just as he finished speaking.

Yolanda Woods asked, "Chief Perry, who is this victim?"

This question made.

Chadric Gates lift his bowed head.

Bartel Perry said, "Secretary Woods, according to police regulations, we must keep the victim's identity confidential; it cannot be disclosed here."

This statement.

Made Chadric Gates lower his head once more.

Anselm Hall asked, "Chief Perry, are you saying that Comrade Carter entered room 333 and scalded the victim's genitals, is that correct?"

Bartel Perry nodded.

And said, "Correct."

"Just based on this?"

Anselm Hall asked, pointing at the paused image on the big screen.

"Of course not, I haven't finished. After receiving the report, the station quickly dispatched officers, and we collected fingerprints from the kettle in room 333. After comparison with the fingerprint database, it was confirmed to be Comrade Carter's fingerprints."

After saying this.

He paused.

Then continued, "We don't have definitive evidence to prove Comrade Carter's intentional harm from this footage alone. If it were solely based on this footage, we wouldn't have arrested him. The police arrested him because we also have witness testimony."

Upon saying this.

The atmosphere became tense again.

Seeing that Dirk Carter showed no expression.

Bartel Perry thought he was beginning to get nervous, so he smiled slightly.

And said, "We have a witness who can testify that Dirk Carter indeed committed a crime that day."

Anselm Hall asked, "Chief Perry, we saw there were three people who entered the scene. Is the witness one of the two women who followed Dirk Carter?"

"Yes!"

This answer.

Instantly made Anselm Hall nervous as well.

He suddenly turned to Dirk Carter, and asked in a low voice, "What's going on?"

Dirk Carter remained composed.

He looked at Bartel Perry and asked, "Are you saying that one of these women is accusing me of harming the victim?"

Bartel Perry waved a document in his hand.

And said triumphantly, "Of course, here is the testimony, you can see for yourself if you don't believe me."

Having said that.

With a snap, he tossed the document in front of Dirk Carter.

Dirk Carter did not pick it up.

But Anselm Hall glanced at it, and indeed, the testimony was from Ewan Forrest, where she admitted that Dirk Carter had scalded the victim's genitals with hot water.

Anselm Hall was stunned.

There was video evidence showing Dirk Carter entered room 333.

Now one of Dirk Carter's people had turned and accused him, with these two pieces of evidence combined, even if Dirk Carter wanted to retract his confession, it would be difficult.

The more anxious Anselm Hall became.

The more pleased Chadric Gates and Bartel Perry felt.

"Comrade Carter, do you have anything else to say?"

Bartel Perry asked smugly.

As if he already had the situation under control.

Dirk Carter remained calm and asked, "Chief Perry, didn't you ever consider, what if this woman is framing me?"

"Framing? Haha, Comrade Carter, a witness is a crucial part of evidence. Now that someone is accusing you of harming another, no matter what you say, this evidence chain is sufficient. Would we choose not to believe a witness's testimony and instead believe your excuses?"

Bartel Perry asked.

Dirk Carter smiled slightly.

And asked, "So, you mean to say witnesses never lie?"

"Of course they don't lie; as long as it's from a witness, we must consider it."

Bartel Perry stated confidently.

Dirk Carter nodded, saying, "Alright, in that case, have the witness come and recount the entire process in front of everyone. If she truly says I harmed the victim, then I'll plead guilty."

Bartel Perry was about to refuse.

But seeing Chadric Gates slightly nod his head.

He said, "Fine, since you're so persistent, I'll let you give up."

He turned and looked at the police officer behind him.

The officer then opened the door and went out.

About five minutes later.

Ewan Forrest was led into the conference room by two policewomen.

Her eyes dared not meet Dirk Carter's, always looking down. It was apparent she felt somewhat guilty.

Bartel Perry smiled.

And said, "Witness Ewan Forrest, please recount the events of that day, don't be afraid, with us here, no one dares to harm you."
