A Bumpy Road to Power

Chapter 401: Sleepless Night

"So... that night, were you... were you in Erica's room?"

Benson Caldwell remained unfazed, even as Clearspring Resort was taken over.

But hearing about Dirk Carter's "lure them deep" plan made him a little uneasy.

Dirk Carter smirked and said, "To reel you in, I sacrificed myself for the country, though it was just my lower half. Feels a bit insulting to put it that way."

"You son of a bitch..."

As soon as he said that.

Benson Caldwell exploded in fury.

He grabbed Dirk Carter by the collar.

Roaring, "Dirk Carter, you're dead. I'm going to kill you with my own hands, watch you beg me for mercy, and regret what you've done for the rest of your life!"

Dirk Carter waved his hand.

Benson Caldwell's hand was knocked away from his collar.

With a cold snort, he said, "Why don't you worry about your own situation first?"

Upon hearing that.

Benson Caldwell showed not a trace of fear.

Instead, he burst into laughter.

Pointing at Dirk Carter, he said, "Still young, thinking things are so simple. Even if you've teamed up with Jaden Lawson, so what? Even if you have all my criminal evidence, so what? Can you dare to turn me in? If you did, I'd be out again in no time. If not, you're illegally detaining me. Not only can you do nothing to me, but you'd also get handcuffed. Such a plan, only you could come up with it!"

Dirk Carter smiled slightly and said calmly, "I can interrogate you right here. With police involvement, it wouldn't be illegal detention, right?"

After Dirk Carter finished speaking.

Maeve Winters entered with a few police officers.

"Interrogate me? You think I would talk? Besides, I'm a national representative. Do you local cops even have the right to arrest me? Fine, I'll cooperate with your investigation. Let's see who laughs last."

After saying this.

Benson Caldwell extended his hands.

Maeve Winters didn't hesitate, handcuffing him immediately.

Soon.

The Criminal Investigation Team in Kenton County set up an interrogation room.

Whether by mistake or intentionally.

This interrogation room had a window that opened directly to the main courtyard of Clearspring Resort.

Which meant Benson Caldwell could see everything happening in the yard.

Sitting in the interrogation chair.

Benson Caldwell yawned.

Said, "Let's begin."

Dirk Carter smiled slightly, saying, "Mr. Caldwell, no rush. You see, I surrounded the yard, but why didn't I break into your bedroom? Do you think I was being polite?"

The calm Benson Caldwell twitched a little.

He asked, "Did you do it on purpose?"

Dirk Carter nodded and said, "I had to give Mr. Caldwell some time to call for help, right? I believe Mr. Caldwell has already made some calls. Those backers of Mr. Caldwell should be closing in on the resort, one after the other. I have to host them one by one."

"Dirk Carter! You're courting death! You don't know anything about the people behind me!"

Benson Caldwell snorted coldly and said.

Dirk Carter stretched lazily.

He said, "Let's see then. I'm really curious to see how much power you, Benson Caldwell, have backing you. I'll take a nap first, a lot going on tomorrow at dawn."

For the average person.

It was just another ordinary day.

But for many in Serenity State, it was a sleepless night.

The first to get the news was Anselm Hall, the customs director of Ardmore City.

At the moment, he was in a private room at a hotel, having an all-night "long talk" with his subordinate, Carmen Lewis.

After some foreplay.

Anselm Hall lifted Carmen Lewis's legs.

Carmen Lewis did her utmost, putting on a seductive display, teasing Anselm Hall to no end.

With a pfft sound, he thrust in.

Anselm Hall sighed, "Youth is great. This tightness, this embrace, it's just too satisfying."

He hadn't even started moving yet.

Carmen Lewis began twisting her body, murmuring sultry words that seemed to enchant Anselm Hall.

After just two movements.

Each thrust reached the deepest part.

Suddenly, the phone rang.

Anselm Hall cursed.

Just as he was about to switch off his phone, he saw the number; it was from Benson Caldwell's deputy, the Gimp.

His heart skipped a beat.

That "thing" instantly became limp and slipped out.

He slapped Carmen Lewis's butt and said, "Go to the bathroom first."

Though unwilling.

Carmen Lewis obediently left the bed.

As soon as the bathroom door shut.

Anselm Hall composed himself, pressed the answer button, and joyfully said, "Gimp, what brings you here so late?"

"Where are you right now?"

The Gimp asked on the phone.

Anselm Hall glanced around and said, "I'm at home right now."

"I don't care where you are now, take all your people and head to Clearspring Resort. Easton has been captured by Dirk Carter. I don't care what means you use, get Easton out. If anything happens to him, you won't live either."

These words immediately put Anselm Hall on high alert.

"Easton... is Easton in Ardmore? And... isn't Dirk Carter handling customs seizures at the port?"

"Idiot, idiot, idiot! Do what I said immediately. I'm already on my way."

After a round of swearing, the Gimp hung up.

Could something have gone wrong somewhere?

Anselm Hall paused and called Ansel Crawford.

Ansel Crawford told him Dirk Carter had left the port an hour ago; the port was still in a standoff.

"Did he mention where he was heading?"

Anselm Hall asked.

Ansel Crawford said, "Yeah, he said he was going to Secretary Song for backup."

Buzz!

Anselm Hall's mind exploded.

Dirk Carter wasn't at the port after all.

Which meant what the Gimp said could be true?

Thinking about this, he was even more alarmed.

Immediately said, "Take your men, no, everyone present, and head to Clearspring Resort. I'm heading there now too."

"Got it, I'll take care of it right away."

After hanging up.

He couldn't bother with romance anymore.

Anselm Hall quickly dressed, cursing Dirk Carter the entire time.

Damn, he thought Dirk Carter went to deal with Jaden Lawson.

Who knew, he was playing a brilliant game of luring the tiger from the mountain.

After getting ready, just about to leave.

Ansel Crawford called.

On the line, he anxiously told Anselm Hall that their people couldn't leave because Fletcher Childs wouldn't allow it, insisting they wait for Dirk Carter to return for the handover.

What was mere suspicion before.

Now it was clear.

Dirk Carter had teamed up with Jaden Lawson and Chadric Gates.

Originally wanting no part of this, but given the situation, Anselm Hall found himself dragged deep into the mess.

He was seething with anger.

But without manpower, nothing could be done.

He had only one choice, to call Curtis Walsh, the director of Ronan Customs.

Unexpectedly, Curtis Walsh had already received the news and was en route with his team from Ronan City. He told Anselm Hall to assess the situation first and wait for him and others to arrive before doing anything.
