Chapter 1705: Disaster Of War (I)
Clouds and mist swirled across the sky as Buddhist chants flowed through the air; multicolored lotuses blossomed; and rays of Radiant Light intertwined. An enormous golden body moved indistinctly among the clouds, casting a vast shadow below.
Gales swept through the air in surging waves, sending the spirit wind reeling and tumbling. A golden spear had pierced the blue-robed man's chest, and his body bobbed helplessly through the sky as the Master Monk behind him rapidly closed the distance, his wild laughter ringing out.
The man coughed up blood, his heart turning cold as he thought, It is not only the crossings... The entire riverbank is already overrun with Buddhist cultivators...
Chen Jinxi had been ordered to guard the riverbank alongside Li Minggong, but the southbound Master Monks had come in such numbers that they had already been struggling to hold them back. Who could have expected that a force of Zhao troops would suddenly charge into the battle halfway through?
These Zhao soldiers wore iron armor and carried the air of the great desert. They were exceptionally powerful, with most being Qi Cultivation Realm cultivators, and were led by Foundation Establishment Realm cultivators. They had deliberately bypassed the positions guarded by Li Minggong and Ding Weizeng to break through from the flank, even deploying a formation-breaking talisman!
The crossings on either side had few defenders to begin with, and depended entirely on Foundation Establishment Realm cultivators rushing over as reinforcements. They fell almost immediately. Seeing both the left and right crossings breached, Li Minggong instantly sensed that something was wrong and ordered everyone to abandon the formation and retreat.
Chen Jinxi was no fool. In fact, he was quite clever. He understood that the forces of the north and south were not evenly matched, so he had remained vigilant at every turn as he fled. Yet he had never imagined that, midway through their retreat, a golden body would come crashing down from the sky!
Such a golden body might amount to nothing before a divine ability, but when it struck the ground, it was no different from a mountain. It could crush a man to death. Chen Jinxi had barely escaped from beneath it, but the faint connection between him and the white ape was immediately severed. He lost sight of Li Minggong and had been chased all the way west!
Chen Jinxi had only recently broken through to the Foundation Establishment Realm. How could he fare well after catching the attention of several Master Monks? In the span of only a few dozen kilometers, he had already been struck by several Buddhist artifacts. Blood poured uncontrollably from his mouth as he raised his head in despair.
Where in the world have the others retreated to... Could the fighting have already reached the lake...
Countless battle cries rose from below as golden weapons clashed against spirit iron, sending flesh and blood flying wherever the two sides met. Just as Chen Jinxi sank into despair, his eyes suddenly lit up. In the distance, a man clad in bronze armor stood amid a pool of blood, wielding an axe in each hand. His blades were mottled with blood, and dense lightning surged from them.
Li Zhouda!
No matter how many outsiders this hot-tempered direct descendant of the Li Family and Qingdu administrator had offended, or how many times he had forced the Chen Family to bow their heads, Chen Jinxi could not stop tears from streaming down his face the instant he saw him.
At last, someone from our side! He has plenty of treasures on him. He can definitely save my life!
Buzz!
The Blood Escape Technique rapidly consumed his blood qi. Chen Jinxi's head spun and his vision blurred. He could barely draw another breath. But as the situation gradually came into focus, his heart jolted.
A golden hook had caught each of Li Zhouda's axes, locking both weapons in place. Thick chains ran from the hooks into the hands of Master Monks on either side, yet Li Zhouda seemed utterly unconcerned. A bronze bell hovered above his head, flashing with lightning as though guarding against something. Li Zhouda’s muscles contracted, forcing the arrows embedded in his chest back out, and he swept a vicious gaze across the enemies before him.
Li Zhouda had always fought at the vanguard, so wounds like these were nothing unusual for him. They had also honed his exquisite combat skills and formidable dharma body. He simply raised both axes high, forcing the Master Monks on either side off balance, then brought the weapons cleaving down through the air!
Boom!
Rolling lightning suddenly erupted, but Chen Jinxi had no time to rejoice. Feeling the chill behind him drawing steadily closer, terror seized his heart. "My lord, save me!"
The sudden cry rang across the battlefield, and Li Zhouda immediately looked up. The hot-tempered man's expression filled at once with shock and unease when he saw Chen Jinxi.
But, without the slightest hesitation, the burly man let out a roar and leaped high into the air. The thunder bell above his head instantly shifted position, moving to envelop the approaching Chen Jinxi within its protection!
Buzz...
But he was ultimately a step too slow. The instant Chen Jinxi's words left his mouth, a figure had already appeared before him, clad in silvery-white armor with a blood-red axe raised high, gazing at him with amused interest.
Peak Foundation Establishment Realm...
The next instant, the blood-red axe crashed into Chen Jinxi's face. The face that bore a seventy-percent resemblance to Chen Yang twisted with terror as his skull split open with a crack. Under the intense brilliance of the Radiant Light, his pale brains burst outward, and the shrill sound of grinding bone mingled at once with the splashing of water!
Urgh!
A wretched howl escaped Chen Jinxi's half-severed tongue. His left hand frantically reached for the right half of his body, but intense pale-yellow radiance erupted from the cleanly severed surface of his torso.
Splash!
Black blood poured down, drenching Li Zhouda from head to toe. The burly man coughed twice before a Buddhist artifact forced him back to the ground. Fighting the urge to collapse, he spat out the clotted blood in his throat and wiped a hand across his breastplate.
Two white, shattered teeth lay in his palm amid the blood water. Their texture was slowly turning gray, clearly transforming rapidly into river stones as time passed. Li Zhouda stared at them blankly. Although he had never been particularly close to Chen Jinxi, his eyes were now bloodshot.
Just then, a cold shout rang beside his ear. "My lord, we must leave!"
The light of Pit Water surged into the sky. Tattered robes were shredded into drifting gray wind as the radiance abruptly flared, casting shifting light and shadow across Li Jiangxia's face nearby. Tall and imposing, the young master stood majestically among the gathered cultivators, covered in blood and wearing a gloomy expression as he tossed aside the head in his hand.
He had clearly come to retrieve Li Zhouda. The smooth, bald head rolled across the ground, its eyes still open and staring greedily at him. Li Zhouda finally released the two axes in his hands, threw out a talisman, and rose into the air on the wind.
Li Jiangxia caught and supported Li Zhouda, then cast a cold glance back. The axe-wielding Gongsun cultivator paid no attention whatsoever to the talisman in the air. Instead, he looked toward his companions and pointed at the brains on the ground, showing off his kill.
Li Zhouda coughed up blood again without saying a word. Li Jiangxia turned away as a group of cultivators came forward to receive them.
"Uncle... Hurry and take some medicine!"
The two landed back within the formation, and Li Jiangxia released the burly man's arm. A woman beside him immediately lifted a cloak and draped it over Li Jiangxia.
Although Li Jiangxia had no children and had never found a woman he deemed worthy of marrying, there were no shortage of women in his residence. Several now crowded around him with concerned expressions, but Li Jiangxia merely waved them aside, his gaze remaining fixed on the towering spirit treasure in the sky.
