Chapter 375: Chapter 375: In the Ruins
That must have been a zombie mastiff.
Now, it was silent.
That Stone Spike was one Nina Jacobs had conjured in coordination with Wayne Warner. Their rapport was so good they no longer needed words.
"Just drive straight in."
Nina Jacobs said.
Reginald Sutton nodded, but only after driving in did he realize the outside of the factory had been almost completely burned.
Inside the factory were the remains of some zombies. The group guessed the zombies in here had probably been eaten by that zombie mastiff from earlier.
"Miss Zephyra, please wait a moment. We’ll have someone clear out a lounge for you immediately."
Lachlan stepped forward and said.
The strike the two had used to kill the zombie mastiff just now had been absolutely stunning to them.
"You have a Water Element Superpower User?" Nina Jacobs asked.
Lexy also jumped out of the car, giving Tristan Lynch a start.
"Of course we do. Thorne, you and the others, come over here."
Tristan Lynch quickly recovered. Taking the opportunity, he introduced the rest of the people to Nina Jacobs one by one.
This included the people they had hired with supplies back in Keldorn.
Although a few had died along the way, Tristan Lynch couldn’t care less.
The team’s Water Element Superpower User was named Theresa Thorne. She looked to be only thirteen or fourteen years old. Right now, she and the others were curiously sizing up Nina Jacobs.
And the cat beside her, which was still grooming its fur.
"From now on, this is your boss. Everyone must obey Miss Zephyra’s orders."
After Tristan Lynch’s announcement, the group mumbled in assent.
"There was an unexpected incident today, and it’s getting late. Everyone will rest here."
"Miss Zephyra doesn’t like to be disturbed. If you need anything, you can come find us."
Cordelia announced to the group.
They knew that Nina Jacobs would be going out alone next.
So they all had to provide cover for her.
Tristan Lynch also hadn’t forgotten about Felix Finch, still in the trunk.
Seeing that Felix Finch still looked half-dead when he was carried out, he was completely relieved.
Half an hour later, Nina Jacobs had already slipped away from the abandoned factory.
She didn’t bring Wayne Warner this time.
After all, she was just going to scout things out. She’d be faster on her own.
The target location was only about five kilometers away. After making sure no one was around, Nina Jacobs directly used her Speed Element Superpower.
The acrid smell of tar filled the air. The entire area, as far as the eye could see, was a ruin of scorched earth and broken walls.
Up ahead, the ground was dotted with dark green puddles. Nina Jacobs stopped in her tracks.
It was only when she got closer that she realized they weren’t puddles at all, but various kinds of industrial oil slicks reeking of chemicals, bubbling with suspicious white foam under the harsh sunlight.
’Probably pollution leaks from chemical and fertilizer plants.’
Nina Jacobs carefully made her way around the heavily polluted area.
No wonder Felix Finch had said some people were poisoned to death. She feared that any supplies in this area would be unusable.
She continued forward and, behind a huge pile of stone and garbage, finally saw some low-lying buildings in the distance.
Seeing the messy footprints on the ground, Nina Jacobs guessed that must be the place Felix Finch had mentioned.
’Someone must have been here recently.’
Soon, Nina Jacobs arrived in front of a pile of obstacles. They formed a complete circle around the few buildings, like a wall.
"Who are you?"
A woman’s voice came from behind her.
Nina Jacobs looked over. It was a woman in tattered rags, so filthy her features were unrecognizable.
"Hello. I’m here to help a friend find someone."
Nina Jacobs replied.
"Who are you looking for?"
The woman’s eyes were full of suspicion.
"Freya Finch. Is he still here?"
Nina Jacobs hesitated for a moment before asking.
When she said the name, she clearly sensed a slight change in the woman’s expression.
However, the other woman replied:
"No. The child you’re looking for isn’t here. You should leave now."
"Looks like this is the place after all."
As Nina Jacobs spoke, the woman took two wary steps back.
"I never said Freya Finch was a child.
If you don’t know him at all, how did you know the person I mentioned was a child?"
The very next second, just as the woman was about to flee, Nina Jacobs was in front of her.
A Flowing Light Dagger was pressed against her neck. Nina Jacobs said coldly, "Take me to Freya Finch."
"Who are you? Why do you want to take Freya?"
The woman immediately grew tense.
"That’s not your concern. Once I see him, I’ll tell you.
Even if you don’t take me, I can kill you and still go in and find him."
Nina Jacobs wasn’t sure what the woman was hiding.
But to her surprise, the woman suddenly started crying.
She sobbed heartbrokenly, tears streaming down her face as if she had suffered a terrible injustice.
"What are you crying for?" Nina Jacobs’s expression shifted slightly.
The woman sobbed:
"Freya Finch... Freya... he’s beyond saving... WAHHH,
We couldn’t save him,
And... and..."
At this, the woman cried even harder.
"And what?"
Nina Jacobs had already prepared herself for the possibility that Freya Finch was dead, but she still planned to see for herself.
"And... and they’re going to eat him!
I was afraid Felix Finch would kill me and my dad when he came back,
so... so I told you that."
Listening to the woman’s guilt-ridden explanation, Nina Jacobs frowned.
"Take me to see. I won’t do anything to you,"
Nina Jacobs said.
But the woman just shook her head and said:
"Don’t go. Someone like you... they won’t let you leave so easily."
Nina Jacobs remained insistent. "But I already promised someone. I have to fulfill my promise."
"Was it Felix Finch? Is he still alive?"
Seeing Nina Jacobs nod, the woman stopped trying to block her.
She led Nina Jacobs into the ruins, explaining the general situation as they walked.
"...Everyone’s gone mad with hunger. There’s no food, no water to drink.
When Felix Finch was here, he would never have let anyone cross that line, no matter what.
But after Felix left, people started starving to death every day, so..."
The woman’s name was Kelly Ainsworth.
She couldn’t get over that mental hurdle either, which was why she had come out to try her luck finding something to eat.
Last time, Mr. Ainsworth had gotten lucky. He found a zombie with a backpack, and after killing it and taking the bag, he found it was full of food.
That was how the father and daughter had survived until now.
After following Kelly Ainsworth into the ruins, Nina Jacobs was quickly surrounded by a similar group of people in tattered rags.
"A new one? Got any supplies?
You have to hand over your supplies to come here."
A bare-chested man said.
He looked Nina Jacobs up and down, quickly concluding that she wasn’t short on supplies or water.
Nina Jacobs looked completely different from their sallow, emaciated group.
"Young, she’s a friend of Felix Finch. She’s here looking for someone."
Kelly Ainsworth quickly tried to explain.
At the mention of Felix Finch, some of the people did indeed show fear.
Nina Jacobs could see their panic and guilt, which made her even more suspicious.
But Young reacted quickly. He let out a soft laugh and said, "Sending a woman here... Don’t tell me Felix Finch is about to die?"
Hearing him say that, the people around him thought it made sense.
Who would leave their own son here and send a woman to find him?
"Don’t worry, he’s not dying.
I’m just here today to take Freya Finch."
Nina Jacobs replied.
