After I Fully Prepared for the Apocalypse, the Ungrateful Cried with Regret

Chapter 406: Who Is Managing

Chapter 406: Chapter 406: Who Is Managing

In the short time she spent talking with Theseus York, Nina Jacobs found out a lot about this place.

Among the five teams, Team 1, managed by Harlan, was currently the weakest.

You could freely place bets on every match, and the betting chips were Crystal Cores.

To Nina Jacobs’s surprise, Crystal Cores were a fully accepted currency inside the correctional facility. They could be used to buy any kind of supplies, even cigarettes and hard liquor.

The catch was, a single pack of cigarettes cost 5,000 Crystal Cores.

Correspondingly, however, winning a match could earn a reward of up to 100,000 Crystal Cores.

’So they’re usable and useful, but not actually valuable.’

This was Nina Jacobs’s summary after listening to Theseus York.

"So, do you know what that room suspended over the arena is used for?"

Nina Jacobs asked.

Theseus York had been here for over two months; he should know far more than Tobin.

At the mention of that place, Theseus York’s expression turned strange.

"There’s only one person who would be in there: the leader of our Lornwood Base, Evander Langdon."

"I wasn’t from this base originally. What kind of person is the leader here?"

Nina Jacobs noticed a trace of anger appear on Theseus York’s previously bewildered face.

"He’s the one who created this place. Everyone says he’s murderous and bloodthirsty, and I think he never saw us as human from the very beginning."

’Murderous and bloodthirsty?’

"Then has he ever made an appearance? Like, participating in the matches, or fighting with anyone?"

Nina Jacobs felt that something wasn’t quite right.

"No..."

Theseus York shook his head.

"He must just enjoy that sense of high-and-mighty dominance. He goes there every day, and the more brutal the deaths, the more satisfied he is. Someone once cursed him out, calling him the source of all suffering in this base."

"What you’re saying is a bit contradictory."

Nina Jacobs said.

"How is it contradictory?"

Theseus York’s confused expression gave him an air of simple-mindedness.

"If Evander Langdon loves to watch murder and bloodshed, why does he never get his own hands dirty? If he likes the feeling of dominant control, why does he just stay in that room all day? He can’t dominate anyone from inside there, can he?"

Nina Jacobs asked.

There was an even more important contradiction.

Jared Crawford’s work logs showed that the letter "L" was marked next to almost every fighting match.

This confirmed what Theseus York had said about him being here every day.

A base has a ton of administrative work, yet Evander Langdon spent all day in here.

’So who is running the base?’

Nina Jacobs’s words seemed to have thoroughly confused Theseus York.

But he couldn’t come up with a rebuttal.

Because Evander Langdon had indeed never killed anyone in public, nor had he even handed out simple punishments.

He himself had only seen the man walk into that room from a distance a few times.

"Anyway, thanks for telling me all this. Oh, right. If you’re betting Crystal Cores tomorrow, you can bet on us."

Nina Jacobs glanced at Theseus York, whose face was still bruised and swollen, and took out her Blood Stopping Spray, letting him use it a couple of times.

"Thanks."

Theseus York watched the two of them walk into the private room.

After a long moment, it finally dawned on him—

’Wait, wasn’t she the one who beat up my face?’

The first night in the correctional facility was much better than Nina Jacobs had imagined.

She had now deployed three of her rats, sending them to different locations according to a rough map she had sketched out.

One of the rats was constantly searching for a path leading downward.

With her Five Senses Enhancement, she could now hear everything going on inside the entire correctional facility.

Even though it was late at night, the inside of the facility was incredibly noisy.

People were fighting, binging on alcohol, and even engaging in human trafficking...

’There really does seem to be a sound coming from below.’

Nina Jacobs had been focusing her attention on the area below and discovered that activity only started after nightfall.

Finally, she locked onto human voices from below:

"...Can we finish loading the back before dawn? This is the first time we’ve transported this much cargo. If anyone sees, they’re bound to get suspicious."

"What’s there to fear? Even if they see us, they’ll just assume we’re transporting corpses."

Another voice replied.

’Just as I thought.’

Nina Jacobs recalled the transport trucks she had seen before entering the correctional facility. The guard, Wolfgang Stone, had told her they were for transporting corpses.

But at Silas Crowley’s residence, Leoric Donovan had said he got out of the correctional facility by helping to burn bodies and shovel manure.

If the bodies were being cremated, why the need to transport them out of the base?

Transporting corpses in the apocalypse was an inherently illogical act.

’So what exactly is going on down there?’

’It doesn’t sound like there are many people, but I wonder if there’s an entrance leading down from inside this facility.’

Just then, one of the Little Zombie Rats that had been exploring downward finally found a passage on the floor leading further down.

The narrow pipes were a tangled maze, but by the time the rat’s form appeared behind a grated vent underground, Nina Jacobs could see through the mesh that the transport trucks had already driven off.

From the rat’s perspective, the rears of the transport trucks had been sealed tight with a Gold Element Superpower.

The vent was surrounded by stone walls on all sides, offering a narrow field of view. It appeared to be an underground tunnel.

As for how long the tunnel was or where it led, she had no way of knowing.

’Are they transporting supplies?’

’But with this many supplies, where are they being taken?’

Nina Jacobs thought of the train she had encountered before, and what that group of people had said.

It seemed highly likely that these were the supplies from that train.

Someone was slowly shipping away Lornwood Base’s supplies.

’Could this person be the mysterious Evander Langdon?’

The paper in front of Nina Jacobs was filled with question marks and connecting lines.

"At least I’ve connected the dots on the supplies."

’Even if it’s only half the story.’

Nina Jacobs thought with a sigh.

She had used her Earth Element Superpower to create a partition in the room. It sounded like Wayne Warner had already eaten his fill and fallen asleep in the adjacent space.

Thinking of the next day’s match, Nina Jacobs also lay down.

She took out the Unlimited Communicator and saw that her mother, Vera Coleman, had left her quite a few messages.

Several of them were about matters in City D Base.

She had been casually asking about base matters these past few days, so Vera Coleman had been keeping an eye out for her.

Vera Coleman told her that two more Intermediate Superpower Users had emerged in City D Base: Chester Pearson and Ian Chandler.

Both had advanced in just the last few days, and Myra Lawson was so pleased that she had prepared a celebratory banquet for them.

Another message was about the Mystic Ice Core. It seems more and more people were seen using Ice Cores within the base, so the fact that City D Base had a good supply of Mystic Ice Cores was likely known to many outsiders by now.

People from other bases were visiting every few days, keeping the base leader, Justin Lawson, incredibly busy.

"It can’t be helped."

Nina Jacobs sighed when she read this message.

The Mystic Ice Core had a shielding effect against Spiritual Element Superpower Users, but if you stood right in front of one, they could tell at a glance whether or not you had absorbed it.

Even though Adrian Shaw and the others would maintain absolute secrecy, as more and more people in the base absorbed the cores, the secret couldn’t be kept for long.

Vera Coleman’s message even mentioned Liam Grant. According to Daniel Hale, he had also applied to the base for a Mystic Ice Core, but his request was denied.

Nina Jacobs sneered when she read this.

She had been indispensable in the collection of the Ice Cores. Before leaving City D, she had made only one demand: under no circumstances were the base’s Ice Cores to be given to Liam Grant or Renee Strong to absorb.

The current supply of Ice Cores was controlled by her and City D Base. It would be virtually impossible for Liam Grant and his people to find any Ice Cores to absorb in City D.
