Chapter 411: Chapter 411: A Deal
"Everyone, get out."
Harlan’s hands were tucked into the pockets of his white coat, and his tone was an order that brooked no argument.
"Har—"
Theseus York tried to say something more, but Zachary Sterling pulled him out of the room.
"What are you doing here?"
Nina Jacobs blocked the way, standing in front of Naomi Summers.
’I managed to avoid everyone else’s notice, but I still couldn’t escape Harlan?’
Harlan laughed.
"You’ve got some nerve asking me."
"You’re using my things and bringing a complete stranger into my territory,"
"Shouldn’t I be the one asking you what you’re doing?"
Harlan said.
Nina Jacobs said nothing, her mind racing.
’If I killed Harlan right here, the people from the Correction Ward might not find out immediately.’
’But I could only hide it for a short time.’
’And it would interfere with my investigation plans...’
"How about we make a deal?"
Harlan spoke first.
"What kind of deal?" Nina Jacobs asked.
"I won’t report you, and I can heal her."
Harlan said, pointing to Naomi Summers on the bed.
"And the condition?"
Nina Jacobs had a feeling he was about to propose something difficult.
"Help me kill Anselm Hughes."
Harlan’s expression grew serious.
"Who is Anselm Hughes?"
It was the first time Nina Jacobs had heard the name.
"It seems you really aren’t from this base.
Anselm Hughes... everyone calls him General Hughes. He holds considerable prestige here,
and of course, his power is not to be underestimated."
Harlan’s words made Nina Jacobs suspicious.
’I originally suspected Harlan was one of General Hughes’s men.’
’But he wants to kill him?’
’General Hughes’s power is indeed considerable.’
’I remember overhearing his conversation with Mrs. White at Jared Crawford’s place.’
’General Hughes has already reached the level of an Intermediate Superpower User.’
’But...’
"Deal."
Nina Jacobs replied.
’Refusing this deal right now would clearly be unwise.’
’It’s not just for Naomi Summers’s sake.’
’It’s also for my own survival and for my plans moving forward.’
"Nina..."
Naomi Summers was touched by their conversation, but she still voiced her concern.
"General Hughes... he’s really powerful. He also has a... a Shadow Legion.
They only obey him and Mrs. White.
You can’t agree to this."
Naomi Summers said.
"How do you know that?"
It wasn’t Nina Jacobs who asked, but Harlan.
He stared intently at Naomi Summers, demanding an answer.
Terrified by his gaze, Naomi Summers stuttered, unable to form a single word.
"Who do you think she crossed to end up in this state?"
Nina Jacobs said.
"Who?"
Harlan had assumed Naomi Summers was just another one of Nina Jacobs’s friends, beaten up on someone else’s turf.
"Mrs. White."
Nina Jacobs replied.
She watched Harlan’s expression. Just as she’d expected, a flash of fury crossed his eyes when he heard the name.
It was the same look he’d had when he mentioned General Hughes through gritted teeth moments ago.
’Looks like he really isn’t on their side.’
"Leave her with me. I’ll heal her.
Speaking of which, you should be getting to the arena."
Harlan’s expression returned to normal.
Wayne Warner’s match was about to begin.
"If you can’t heal her, I’ll kill you.
And if you dare to lay a hand on her, you’ll die too."
After a moment of consideration, Nina Jacobs left him with those parting words.
Naomi Summers’s mouth fell open, and she remained that way until she was wheeled to another area.
Through a gap in the sheet covering her, she saw the man in the white coat slump weakly onto a nearby seat.
He kept his head down, but after a long moment, he began to laugh.
His laughter grew louder and louder, until he was clutching his face, sobbing.
"So similar. So damn similar."
Naomi Summers heard the man say.
"She’s just too much like her."
Harlan looked heartbroken.
’Back then, she had said something similar to me.’
"’If you can’t heal them, I’ll kill you.’"
’And that time, I did manage to heal the patient.’
’Then later, she came to me again, covered in blood and carrying someone on her back, and said the very same thing.’
’If you can’t heal them, I’ll kill you.’
’That time, I failed.’
’But she didn’t kill me...’
’From the moment I first saw Nina Jacobs, I saw her shadow in her.’
’Nina Jacobs isn’t as old, but her demeanor is so similar.’
"But in the end, she is not her."
After a deep sigh, Naomi Summers sensed him walking toward her. He pulled back the sheet that covered her...
Meanwhile, in the combat arena, the crowd was staring in shock at the two fighters in the center ring.
"The manager of Team 3, Everett Young, he’s... he’s actually fighting himself?!"
"Hah. He just didn’t get his fill of killing today and wants to have a little fun."
"Who’s this unlucky bastard? Running into Everett Young... he’s going to have a miserable death, isn’t he?"
"Can’t you tell? He’s from Team 1. He’s that follower of the Earth Element Superpower User, Nina Jacobs. Some of the people she killed this morning were from Team 3. Everett Young must be here for revenge."
"..."
At that moment, Nina Jacobs was sitting with Tobin, a troubled expression on her face.
Of course, it wasn’t because of Wayne Warner. She had just gone to collect the Crystal Cores from her morning bet.
When the match results were settled, her 500 Crystal Cores had multiplied by more than seventy times, netting her nearly 40,000 Crystal Cores.
Since she had collected her winnings in full view of everyone, she hadn’t been able to transfer them to her storage space.
Beside her, Tobin was watching the fight between the two Strength Element Superpower Users in the ring, his nerves stretched taut.
Everett Young was also a Strength Element Superpower User.
"Don’t worry."
Nina Jacobs said.
’Wayne Warner definitely won’t lose.’
"I know Wayne Warner is tough, but that guy, Everett Young, is vicious."
Tobin couldn’t help but worry.
Rumor had it that Everett Young used live people as punching bags, beating several to death every day just for practice.
They died horribly, most of them with their internal organs pulverized.
Nina Jacobs glanced toward the center of the arena. Everett Young’s attacks were indeed as precise as a viper’s strike and packed with power.
Against anyone else, a single one of his punches would likely cause massive trauma.
But Wayne Warner was different. The force of the blows did little damage to his already enhanced body; in fact, he could reflect at least 60% of the attack’s power.
In other words, the harder his opponent attacked, the more damage was reflected back at them.
Seeing that Nina Jacobs was completely unconcerned, Tobin began to relax as well.
And sure enough, many of the spectators watching up close started to notice something strange.
Everett Young’s attacks were clearly more forceful, yet he was the one who appeared to be injured.
Wayne Warner wasn’t dodging, either. He simply met each blow with his own fists and palms.
’Nina Jacobs said that as long as I don’t kill him, anything goes.’
So, Wayne Warner caught one of his opponent’s punches, gripping it firmly. With his other hand, he swiftly slammed a fist into the side of his opponent’s face!
The seemingly unremarkable punch nearly sent Everett Young flying out of the arena!
Everett Young stared at Wayne Warner in shock.
’I just wanted to teach that woman a lesson and kill her lackey while I was at it.’
’My Strength Element is supposed to be unrivaled in this entire base.’
’But now I realize I haven’t even laid a scratch on him?!’
And now, his opponent was clearly starting his own offensive!
Watching Wayne Warner charge toward him, Everett Young could only scramble to dodge.
The entire crowd erupted.
"I can’t believe I’m living to see the day Everett Young gets beaten like a punching bag."
"Serves him right!"
"Kill him!"
"Haven’t you guys heard? He and that Nina Jacobs are on the same team. They’re planning to win five matches in a row to get out of this place."
"So that means neither of them can kill their opponent?"
Everyone who heard that felt it was a shame.
Killing Everett Young would have made for a much better show.
