Chapter 462: Chapter 462: Mr. and Mrs. Caldwell
In any era, a girl with no one to look out for her was bound to run into all sorts of trouble. Vera Xavier didn’t need to lift a finger; others would voluntarily step up and do exactly what she wanted.
Cara Preston had backed herself into a corner, completely isolated and helpless, yet she still lacked any shred of self-awareness. One could only say she got what she deserved.
Jack Judd, however, was still completely in the dark. Still, he figured the matter was resolved one way or another. Whether Cara Preston was working illegally or had been abducted by human traffickers, the outcome wouldn’t be good regardless, so he couldn’t be bothered to worry about it anymore.
However, this was a task Nathaniel Nathan had assigned him. Now that things had unfolded differently than Nathaniel had anticipated, he of course needed to report back. So, he gave Nathaniel Nathan another call.
After hearing him out, Nathaniel Nathan replied flatly, "Got it," and hung up.
Jack Judd was completely baffled. He had no idea what to make of their reactions. He muttered to himself, "Both of them just said ’Got it,’ and neither one was surprised. Could they have known about this beforehand?"
Then again, he thought that was impossible; neither of them had been there. He just felt that the two of them couldn’t be a more perfect match. The way they both said "Got it"—their tone was practically identical.
After hanging up, Nathaniel Nathan raised an eyebrow slightly. ’I still underestimated Vera Xavier,’ he thought. ’That girl always looks so cheerful and sweet, but she’s absolutely ruthless when she takes action. I was worried she hadn’t thought it through, but it looks like I was just being meddlesome.’
He genuinely felt that with such a clever and powerful fiancée, there was absolutely no room for him to step in and be useful. ’It’s actually quite depressing!’
’How am I ever going to make my presence felt with her?’ He felt this would be the most difficult challenge he would face in the years to come.
While Vera Xavier was busy dealing with Cara Preston, Susan Caldwell, who had left Crestfall in disgrace, had returned to the Caldwell family home in Veridia.
Susan Caldwell had been in a terrible mood for the past few days. After being so thoroughly humiliated, how could she possibly stomach it!
But with Vera Xavier so far away in Crestfall, even if Susan wanted to scheme against her, she lacked the means.
But she was determined not to let it go. Every day, she went out, trying to figure out a way to deal with Vera Xavier.
When she returned home, she found Mr. Caldwell looking over a stack of documents with a grave expression. Even her mother, Winter Sullivan, who was normally absorbed in weapon design and manufacturing, was uncharacteristically at home instead of in her lab.
Susan Caldwell sensed that the atmosphere in the house was a bit off, but she smiled and said, "Mom, you didn’t go to work today!"
Winter Sullivan saw her daughter in a pink princess dress and delicate nude high heels, with light makeup on. She looked every bit the gentle, prim-and-proper lady. But...
She shot a look at Susan, snatched the file from Mr. Caldwell’s hands, and slammed it down in front of her. "How do you explain this?"
Susan Caldwell was confused. She gave Winter Sullivan a fearful glance before looking down at the file. With just one look, her calm and collected expression began to crumble.
The file contained a detailed record of her actions in Trellis: making a bet on stone gambling, losing, and then bribing the police chief to frame her opponent as a drug dealer’s woman. It detailed how she had Leo Wright viciously beat up a street vendor, breaking the man’s ribs, then refused to take any responsibility, even starting a mob fight over it.
Susan Caldwell had always known her mother, Winter Sullivan, to be a person of integrity who truly abhorred evil. Every single one of the acts listed in that file had crossed her mother’s line.
