Susan paused, stealing a glance at Julian. When she saw him frown slightly, she pressed on. "She told Mom that I bullied her at Trellis, that I tried to kill her there. Even the misunderstanding in the cafeteria—she twisted it to make me sound malicious and went tattling to Mom."

"Dad, you know how it is. Mom’s always had a problem with me, and she’s always been suspicious about what happened at Trellis. In the past, whenever I did anything she didn’t like, she’d punish me! This time I just couldn’t take it anymore and talked back a little, and now she wants to kick me out of the house!"

’Susan had already thought it through. She had to pin all of this on Vera. That would both tarnish Vera’s image in Julian’s eyes and drive a wedge between Julian and Winter Sullivan.

Wiping away her tears, Susan nodded. Julian called for the driver to take her back to school. At the school gate, he comforted her once more, "Your mom has always been strict with you. Try not to stay mad at her."

Susan nodded obediently. Julian glanced toward the campus. ’He was starting to get curious about this girl, Vera. What kind of person could possibly fool Winter Sullivan?’

Curious as he was about Vera, a man of his standing certainly wouldn’t go out of his way to make trouble for a teenager. Still, even without having met her, a seed of dislike for Vera had already been planted in his mind.

Thanks to Susan’s little speech, Vera was now, in his mind, a deeply conniving girl who was an expert at sowing discord.

As Julian had the driver pull away, Vera Xavier, wearing a backpack, walked right past his car. He didn’t recognize her, so he didn’t know it was Vera. And he, sitting inside the car, didn’t see her through the glass.

When Julian Caldwell got home, the sight of the chaotic mess and the fresh blood on the floor gave him a terrible shock. The housekeeper wasn’t in, as no one was supposed to be home that day. The house had been empty ever since Sheldon Caldwell took Winter Sullivan to the hospital.

Julian had a sinking feeling that something was very wrong. Just then, the home phone rang. He answered. It was Sheldon Caldwell, telling him that Winter Sullivan was injured and currently at the hospital undergoing a full check-up.

The news horrified Julian. He hung up the phone and immediately rushed to the hospital.
