Chapter 708: Chapter 708: A Couple’s Affection (2)

Winter Sullivan paused for a moment. "I believe that even if your current status in Veridia isn’t remarkable," she continued, "with your intelligence and talent, you’ll soar to great heights one day. The things that once worried you definitely won’t be able to hold you back."

Vera Xavier smiled back. "I’ll do my best."

She knew Winter was referring to Brooke Mitchell’s dislike of her. And while Vera found it a bit troublesome, it wasn’t enough to make her anxious. It was simply a matter of slowly softening Brooke’s attitude over time.

Seeing Vera’s calm self-assurance, Winter couldn’t help but smile. ’If only Susan were half as sensible as her,’ she thought, ’I wouldn’t be this anxious.’

Meanwhile, Julian Caldwell was having lunch with his daughter, Susan. Suddenly, Julian remembered something. "Your mom is being discharged from the hospital today," he exclaimed. "I can’t believe I forgot! Let’s hurry up and eat so we can go pick her up."

Susan pouted slightly. "Dad, I’m afraid Mom still doesn’t want to see me today. Do I have to go?"

"Don’t be silly." Julian looked at her. "Mothers and daughters don’t stay mad at each other. Besides, that whole thing was ages ago. Your mother is one of the most magnanimous women in the world. Why would she hold a grudge over something so small?"

Susan said with a worried expression, "But..."

"No buts." Julian sighed. "Your mother can be stubborn, but you have to believe she’s one of the people who cares about you most in this world. So you’re coming with me to the hospital to pick her up. When you see her, just give in a little, apologize, and this whole thing will be over."

Susan knew it wouldn’t be over that quickly. ’Winter is probably utterly disappointed in me after what happened,’ she thought. But she couldn’t say any of this to Julian. She had to maintain her "good girl" image, so she simply gave a slight nod.

After they finished eating, the two of them headed straight for the hospital. Susan rehearsed what she would say in her head, feeling understandably nervous as they went inside. However, when they reached the room, it was empty. Winter wasn’t there.

Julian found a nurse and asked, only to learn that Winter had been discharged early that morning. He felt a pang of guilt. He’d been so preoccupied with Susan’s situation that he’d completely forgotten about his wife’s discharge. He decided he would apologize properly once they got home.

Susan, on the other hand, secretly breathed a sigh of relief. ’If I can help it, I don’t want to see her at all,’ she thought.

Julian hurriedly took Susan home, but the front door was locked. Winter hadn’t returned. He assumed she had gone to the research institute, so he gave them a call. However, the receptionist told him that Winter hadn’t come in today.

Julian’s brow furrowed. ’Where could Winter have gone after leaving the hospital?’ he wondered.

Susan breathed another sigh of relief. ’I really don’t want to see her.’ But she couldn’t let it show. She put on an anxious expression, then suddenly seemed to remember something. "Dad, Mom didn’t go looking for Vera, did she?"

Julian asked, confused, "But your mom has only met Vera a few times, right? She only just recovered. Why would she go looking for her?"

"That’s something you don’t know, Dad. Vera is an expert at brainwashing people, and Mom trusts her completely." Susan sighed. "So it’s entirely possible the first thing she did after leaving the hospital was go see Vera. It’s just... if that’s true, it means you’re not even as important to Mom as Vera is."
