Chapter 727: Chapter 727: Just Beating You (3)
So Sheldon Caldwell grabbed Secretary Archer’s other hand and twisted it. With a loud CRACK, it snapped too.
Secretary Archer howled in pain, his forehead beaded with sweat.
Sheldon Caldwell said seriously, "You’ve damaged my reputation. I’m going to sue you for slander!"
Secretary Archer had assumed he could throw the White Family’s name around and do as he pleased at Veridia University. But who could have possibly explained this? How did a girl like Vera Xavier, who seemed to have no connections at all, know someone from the Caldwell Family? And how had he managed to drag them into this?
As an expert sycophant, Secretary Archer had now completely snapped back to his senses. He said hurriedly, "I’m so sorry! This was all just a misunderstanding. It was all my fault, I apologize to you both!"
Sheldon Caldwell shook his head. "We broke your hand. Weren’t you going to sue us? Let’s just do it together. No apology necessary!"
Secretary Archer was one step away from kneeling. "I... I broke my hand in a fall. It has nothing to do with either of you!"
"That’s not right. We clearly broke your hand, and I must take responsibility for it!" Sheldon Caldwell said earnestly. "Ever since I was little, my mom taught me to be an honest person. Lying in public is something I just can’t do!"
Secretary Archer wanted to cry. ’If this situation escalates, I’ll be the only one who loses out!’
So he quickly said, "That’s really not it. My hand was already broken from a fall before I came here!"
"Is that so!" Sheldon Caldwell looked at him and asked, "So, you’re saying we really didn’t break your hand?"
"You really didn’t!" Secretary Archer said hastily.
Sheldon Caldwell tsk-tsked a few times before saying, "Well, you’re a nasty piece of work, aren’t you? Running all over the place with a broken hand... you weren’t trying to frame us for it, were you?"
Listening to their exchange from the sidelines, Vera Xavier felt the corner of her mouth twitch. ’I really never expected Sheldon Caldwell to have a side like this.’ But then, just as quickly, she understood. ’A family background like the Caldwells’ is truly terrifying.’
She finally understood why Susan Caldwell was so fond of flaunting the Caldwell family name to get special treatment. The mere mention of the family name was enough to reduce the once-pompous Secretary Archer to this pathetic state, which spoke volumes.
Secretary Archer said quickly, "Today was just a misunderstanding, a misunderstanding!"
Sheldon Caldwell nodded. "If you put it that way, it does sound like a misunderstanding. However, I believe this incident caused my sister significant emotional distress. It’s up to her how this ends. I will support her unconditionally."
When he finished, he saw everyone staring at him, so he clarified, "Vera Xavier is my adopted sister. To me, she’s the same as my own flesh and blood! Anyone who bullies her is bullying me!"
Hearing his words, Vera Xavier was overcome with an emotion she couldn’t quite name. At this time, the two had not yet acknowledged their real connection. For him to say something like this was purely a testament to the bond they had formed recently. But even so, it filled her with warmth.
Vera Xavier turned to look at Laura White. Seeing how things had turned out, Laura’s face was already white with fear.
When Laura White had earlier heard Vera Xavier on the phone with Nathaniel Nathan, she had thought Vera was just bluffing. Even if Vera really was involved with Sheldon Caldwell, Laura was certain he wouldn’t dare stand up for her in a public situation like this for fear of damaging his own reputation.
While she’d had an inkling that Sheldon Caldwell came from a powerful family, she hadn’t grown up in Veridia and wasn’t familiar with the local hierarchy, so she hadn’t given it too much thought.
