Chapter 746: Chapter 746: Thrashed (4)

Lane Yancey looked at Vera Xavier and asked, "You’re Vera Xavier?"

Vera Xavier nodded. "Did you call for me because of Susan Caldwell, Chancellor? If so, Colonel Caldwell should have already told you the whole story. I have no objection to however you decide to handle it."

’When she heard the Chancellor was looking for her, she knew it had to be about this. She was perfectly calm about it. After all, she was the victim from start to finish. No matter what punishment was handed down, it wouldn’t be for her.’

’As for how Susan would be punished, she was calm about that, too. Any punishment would be a major blow to Susan.’

When Lane Yancey’s secretary had explained the situation to him earlier, he had gotten the impression that Vera Xavier wasn’t the easygoing type. But her current attitude was surprisingly agreeable.

Lane Yancey sensed there was more to this girl than met the eye. He asked probingly, "According to university regulations, Susan Caldwell is to be expelled. What are your thoughts on that?"

The moment he finished speaking, Sheldon Caldwell’s gaze shifted to Vera Xavier.

Vera glanced at Sheldon. She could see a hint of helplessness in his eyes. No matter how you looked at it, Susan had tried to frame her first. He really couldn’t bring himself to ask Vera for leniency.

’Seeing his expression, Vera understood. She glanced over at Lane Yancey. With his refined, scholarly air, he looked every bit the academic. But she knew better. The Chancellor of Veridia University had to balance countless interests. A simple scholar could never hold this position.’

’Besides, if he truly intended to expel Susan, he could have just posted a notice. Why would he need to ask for her opinion?’

’She immediately understood. This was a setup.’

’And if this was a setup, if she wasn’t going to be able to get Susan kicked out of Veridia University this time, then she might as well play the "good guy."’

She sighed and said, "What Susan Caldwell did was despicable, not to mention insidious and cruel. But I’ve always believed that becoming classmates is a special kind of fate. And since this is her first offense, as long as she apologizes to me in front of the entire university, I’m willing to forgive her and drop the matter."

Hearing this, Lane Yancey couldn’t help but study her again. Her expression was still gentle, making her seem quite agreeable. Her words were not only compassionate but also demonstrated her magnanimity.

The corner of Lane Yancey’s mouth lifted, and the smile in his eyes deepened. "Vera Xavier," he said with a chuckle, "you’re quite impressive."

"Thank you for the compliment, Chancellor." Vera looked at him. "However, I do have a small suggestion."

"Go on," Lane Yancey said, smiling at her.

Vera said calmly, "To put it bluntly, this whole incident started because Susan was jealous and framed me. A group of girls was incited by her, and when they realized they’d been deceived, they beat her up. I know what they did was also wrong, but I ask that you be lenient in their punishment, Chancellor."

Lane Yancey chuckled and nodded. "You’re a clever one, aren’t you? Alright, I’ll accept your suggestion."

Vera beamed. "Thank you, Chancellor! I’m confident that under your leadership, our university will reach new heights!"
