Chapter 758: Chapter 758: Recital (4)
Sheldon Caldwell was, for the most part, satisfied with the more than one hundred students selected for the intensive training. However, the military academy cadets were, on the whole, in better physical condition than his students, so this was going to be a tough fight.
The day of the military performance review arrived quickly. Early that morning, several large trucks pulled up at Veridia University and transported all the students from the training program to the host academy.
This was Vera Xavier’s first time at the academy. The atmosphere here was starkly different from the academic environment of Veridia University, as the subjects they studied were completely different. The moment she stepped foot on campus, a wave of tension washed over her.
The cadets’ performance review at the end of their annual military training was always a matter of great interest to the organization’s leadership, as the quality of the new class of students directly impacted the quality of new soldiers.
Therefore, a number of senior leaders would come to observe the review each year. The organization would also dispatch other leaders whose job was to critique the performance and scout for talent. Outstanding students who managed to stand out during the review would subsequently receive special attention and be selected for corresponding advanced training.
As the host of the performance review, the entire academy was a flurry of activity from top to bottom all morning.
Nathaniel Nathan wasn’t originally required to attend, but when he heard Sheldon Caldwell was bringing the students from Veridia University for the performance review, he felt he had to come and watch. After all, his wife had worked so hard for so long.
He hadn’t been back in the country for very long, but many of the organization’s senior leaders knew him. Seeing him arrive, one of them teased him directly, "Deputy General Manager Nathan, what are you doing slacking off here instead of running drills with your unit?"
"A healthy work-life balance," Nathaniel said nonchalantly.
In front of these senior leaders, he was much more genial than usual. He held them in high regard, as they had all made tremendous contributions to the organization, each boasting a list of brilliant accomplishments.
Leader Sullivan laughed heartily. "That makes sense. While training can’t be taken lightly, you can’t push them too hard, either. I heard that last year, you trained your branch so intensely that the unit ran out of medical supplies. I was worried for a while, so seeing you here now, I’m quite relieved!"
Leader Zhang chimed in, "Don’t be so relieved just yet. I have a feeling this young man from the Nathan family is up to no good today."
Nathaniel smiled. "What sort of trouble could I possibly be up to?"
"I bet you’re here to poach talent!" Leader Zhang said, looking at him. "I’ve heard that ever since you came back, you’ve been nabbing resources left and right. Your branch’s equipment has been completely overhauled since you took over as Deputy General Manager, hasn’t it?"
"Sir, that’s a bit of an exaggeration," Nathaniel said with a serious expression. "I’ve never nabbed anything. I earned what I deserved through merit. Or, you could say I was simply securing benefits for our branch."
When he first took over his branch, it was just an ordinary one with subpar weaponry. For someone like him, who always strove to be the best in everything he did, how could that possibly be tolerable?
He had gone to Seth Maverick to request new equipment, but Seth had told him that all the organization’s gear was allocated uniformly. If he wanted better equipment, he would have to earn it through merit.
When Nathaniel Nathan heard Seth Maverick’s words, he showed no reaction, maintaining his usual icy demeanor.
