Chapter 769: Chapter 769: A Harsh Slap in the Face (3)
As for Skylar Crowe stirring up trouble, Sheldon Caldwell refused to believe it wasn’t at Susan Caldwell’s direction. He was utterly disappointed in his sister. Her narrow-mindedness, her pettiness, her way of handling things... she was essentially no different from a coarse country girl. He truly couldn’t understand how he could have such a sister!
He also couldn’t understand why Julian Caldwell was still being completely duped by Susan Caldwell. Then he recalled how he, too, had once been twisted around her finger, and his expression soured further.
He stopped looking at Skylar Crowe and shouted, "Vera Xavier!"
"Present!" Vera Xavier stood and walked up to him.
Sheldon Caldwell’s expression was stern. "Your score is just too good. I personally feel that one round isn’t enough to prove your ability. Therefore, I’ve just requested permission from the leadership for you to shoot another ten rounds in front of everyone. Are you confident?"
"I am," Vera Xavier replied succinctly.
’This is what I expected.’ Sheldon Caldwell usually seemed a bit flighty, but he was actually a man of integrity who couldn’t tolerate any deceit. Given his personality, he was bound to handle this matter in a grand, public fashion.
"Very good." Sheldon Caldwell then turned to the chief instructor of Skylar Crowe’s university. "You heard what the senior leaders said. Take your student and go to the shooting range with Vera."
When the young soldier in charge of calling out the scores had reported Skylar Crowe’s accusation, he’d been clever. He only said that Skylar Crowe suspected Vera Xavier of cheating. As the chief instructor and president of the university in question were discussing the matter, they were overheard by the presidents of other schools and the various leaders present. Two opposing viewpoints immediately emerged.
One faction firmly believed the instructors from the university in question were impartial and would never engage in cheating.
The other faction felt that Vera Xavier’s score was simply too good. Not even a seasoned marksman could achieve such a result, so how could a freshman with only a few days of training possibly pull it off?
Faced with these two opposing views, the chief instructor of the university in question proposed that Vera Xavier shoot again in public. It was the only way to prove their innocence.
Cheating was a cardinal sin in this kind of competition, so the instructors who had fallen under suspicion were, naturally, furious.
Nathaniel Nathan then offered another suggestion. "As I see it, this is clearly a rumor started by someone who can’t accept the results. If that’s the case, let the one who accused Vera Xavier of cheating shoot again alongside her. That way, she can see for herself whether Vera cheated and be thoroughly convinced of the truth!"
His proposal was met with widespread approval. After all, they viewed this as a serious matter that needed to be resolved. It was essential to clear the air and put an end to all speculation.
Vera Xavier and Skylar Crowe entered the shooting range together. This time, the veteran leaders and university presidents didn’t wait for the results on the main platform; they all came over to watch in person.
They were deeply invested in the outcome. If Vera Xavier hadn’t cheated, it meant she was a shooting prodigy. And even though she was a student at Veridia University, they would find a way to poach her.
If, however, she had cheated, then she was a person of despicable character who must be punished severely.
Standing on the firing line with Vera Xavier were the instructors from her university. Their reputations were at stake. As they prepared the equipment, the chief instructor personally brought out their finest rifle to ensure Vera’s accuracy would not be compromised.
