Chapter 774: Chapter 774: Kiss Her in Public (Part 2)
Vera Xavier figured his words were meant for Leo Lane, deliberately trying to get a rise out of him, so she didn’t respond. She was here today to compete, not to make enemies.
Leo Lane watched Vera Xavier’s retreating back, lost in thought. An instructor beside him asked, "Chief, do you really think that girl, Vera Xavier, can take first place in every event?"
Instead of answering, Leo Lane countered, "Have you ever seen someone completely new to this kind of training score consecutive perfect tens?"
The instructor scratched his head. "I didn’t expect it either. To be honest, for a moment there, I suspected Young might be helping Vera Xavier cheat. After all, the girl is seriously good-looking."
Young was the instructor in charge of calling out the target scores.
Young glared at that instructor. "Are you dense? How could anyone from the Eagle Squadron possibly cheat! Besides, shooting is the one event where cheating is practically impossible! And let’s be real, even if I *did* want to cheat for Vera Xavier, how brain-dead would I have to be to give her a perfect score of all tens? Wouldn’t that just be asking for trouble?"
A perfect score would inevitably draw everyone’s attention. Who would be that stupid? It would be like holding up a sign saying something fishy was going on.
Everyone understood this reasoning, and now their gazes toward Vera Xavier were filled with admiration. Leo Lane chose this moment to add, "Someone like Vera Xavier... she might just be one of those legendary geniuses you hear about."
His statement immediately found universal agreement. If she wasn’t a genius, how else could she have achieved such incredible results in so little time? It was just a shame she wasn’t a student at their school.
Young felt an immense sense of relief. ’Thank God Vera Xavier kept scoring perfect tens,’ he thought. ’Otherwise, I wouldn’t have been able to clear my name today even if I jumped into The Ochre River.’
Then, another question occurred to Young. ’To be able to consistently score perfect tens under that kind of pressure... just what kind of mental fortitude does Vera Xavier have?’
Vera Xavier paid no mind to how many people were stunned by her perfect score. Having been reborn, all she wanted was to be the best version of herself. She was willing to put her all into everything she did, and she was discovering that once she truly tried, many things weren’t as difficult as she’d imagined.
Things that were skill-based seemed to come to her with remarkable ease.
However, she also knew it was best to stop showing off at a certain point. Being too exceptional could sometimes attract unnecessary trouble. So, she turned to Sheldon Caldwell and said, "I think I’m just too good. It doesn’t seem fair to bully everyone else, so I’m not going to participate in the rest of the events!"
Sheldon Caldwell looked as if he’d been struck by lightning. "If you don’t compete, who will?"
"Find a substitute. People like Shirley Ewing or Fiona Wright are both pretty good," Vera Xavier said with a smile. "I should at least give the other students a fighting chance. We aren’t students who specialize in this, so it’s not a disgrace if we don’t take first place!"
Sheldon Caldwell immediately grew frantic. "You’re giving them a fighting chance, but what about me?"
"That’s something I haven’t considered," Vera Xavier replied.
Sheldon Caldwell’s panic escalated. "Well, you have to think about it! You have no idea how many people at the company are just waiting to see me fail. If Veridia University doesn’t take first place this time, I’ll be a total laughingstock!"
"You’re so thick-skinned. Are you really afraid of being laughed at?" Vera Xavier said, her face a mask of disdain.
Sheldon Caldwell was speechless.
