Chapter 879: Chapter 869: Su Qing: Good Kid
"You’ve done this before? How come you never told me about it?"
After finishing one activity and coming down, with the landlady stepping in to host the next game, Su Qing finally had a gap to come down and grab some water.
The parent he had just been doing tug-of-war with had to weigh at least 200 pounds, almost yanking him clear off his feet.
Looking at it now, men really do need a bit of meat on them, otherwise you’re at such a disadvantage!
Hearing that, Su Qing couldn’t help taking a deep breath before replying, "Uh... I forgot. There was a lot going on in April. As soon as I got back from Hengdian, I went with Nan-ge to meet that online friend, then when I got back I was in a bad mood. After that I went to your place, then came back again. If no one brings up this kind of little thing, even I forget about it."
Seriously, if even Du Qiang can play a background extra, why can’t he act?
That was one of the reasons he’d felt so incredibly unbalanced when he first heard Du Qiang was going to play a criminal-investigation team captain.
Shen Yi was not satisfied with his explanation; she turned her head to look at Tang Nan, her eyes asking for confirmation.
"Don’t look at me, I don’t know a thing. I didn’t go over there to check out your man; I went to work, okay? You think filming variety shows is that easy? You think I’m as happy as you imagine?
You guys can’t even begin to imagine how chill and joyful I am!"
Su Qing: ...
Shen Yi: ...
"So... you’re kind of proud of that?"
"Of course. Why wouldn’t I be proud? Besides, your man went with Wang Fan and Director Wang; he’s way more familiar with the directors over in Hengdian than I am. How would I know what he was up to over there those few days? For all we know some director might’ve been introducing actresses to him to drink with." Tang Nan turned into the "crooked-mouth dragon king," her whole attitude screaming "come punch me."
"Hey hey hey, joke all you want but I can sue you for slander, okay? That’s not the kind of joke you make. Those two days I just followed Director Wang around, met a few directors, got a few contacts, and checked out how the crews over there were doing. There was none of that shady stuff. When we went out to eat it was all dudes, and we didn’t even drink." Su Qing hurried to explain.
Shen Yi might not believe everything Tang Nan said, but she would absolutely seize the opportunity to twist the knife and roast him with it. That’d feel awful, downright awful.
Today was Children’s Day, so Tang Nan had deliberately scheduled her scenes for the afternoon and came over to join the fun.
Calling it a polite gesture wasn’t quite right; the three of them were close enough already. Mainly, they all felt the little girl was pitiful—no dad—so the three of them came along. Plus the landlady, that made four "parents," by far the largest entourage any kid had.
"Hey, are you confident about the two movies you’ve got releasing today? Don’t talk to me about This Killer Is Not Very Calm—that one’s a remake, it’s already market-tested, and with that cast there’s basically no way it flops. I’m asking about your Eyes of Nobody." Tang Nan asked.
Hearing that, Shen Yi perked up too. Su Qing had invested in two films in a row and both blew up at the box office, so she was curious whether her little man could keep the miracle going.
"I don’t think a low budget necessarily means you can’t make a good film. Be honest with yourself: in all the movies you’ve shot, how much of the budget actually went into the film itself?" Su Qing asked.
At that, Tang Nan looked a little awkward. Truth be told, she had acted in a few really good movies when she first debuted, but she’d been a supporting role in those. Later, once she got popular, the projects she took became a mixed bag. There were some scripts she clearly didn’t want to accept, but what could she do—she was still a wage slave.
Seeing her expression, Su Qing went on, "Movies are about telling a story. It’s fine if the costumes and props are a bit cheap, but if the story is trash, that’s a problem. Besides, the essence of a wuxia film is that ’wu’—the martial. As long as the fight scenes pop, that’s enough. I’m actually pretty confident!"
"So what kind of numbers do you think it can hit?"
"Hard to say exactly, but it definitely won’t make as much as the others. Still, it’ll turn a profit. I won’t jinx it—let’s say twenty to thirty million at least!"
Tang An: ...
On the surface, twenty to thirty million sounded like nothing compared to the returns from his other investments, but he’d only put ten million into this film total. If it really pulled in twenty to thirty million in profit, that’d be insane. It’s not like every movie can rake in several hundred million in terrifying returns.
"By the way, how’s your drama shoot going?" Su Qing asked.
"Everything’s going smoothly. A friend of mine came by yesterday for a guest spot. Once this drama wraps, it’s absolutely going to blow your mind!"
"Let’s hope so."
"Hey, what’s with that face? You don’t believe me?"
At that, Shen Yi quickly tugged Su Qing’s hand and stepped a little aside, staying well clear of this woman.
At eleven in the morning, the school’s Children’s Day celebration officially ended, and the kids were released for the holiday.
Gotta say, elementary school is great—Kids’ Day and you actually get time off. The little ones all headed off to find their respective parents.
"Goodbye, teacher!"
"Goodbye, Xu Tong!"
"Goodbye, teacher!"
"Goodbye, Wen Yun!"
...
At the school gate, crowds of parents were there to pick up their kids.
Just then, Su Qing suddenly spotted a little boy scampering over to Wen Yun, throwing his arms around her: "Bye, I’m gonna miss you!"
"Bye, Wang Ze!" Little Wen Yun gave him a hug back too.
In an instant, the three adults—Su Qing, Shen Yi, and Tang Nan—were all stunned. Kids these days really live in the spotlight, huh?
Thinking back to when he was that age, girls weren’t even as important as a lump of mud in his hand.
The landlady, watching this, still looked perfectly dignified, smiling demurely. But in her heart...
[No way, I gotta sit my girl down for some serious education later. She can’t be doing that. You little brat—considering how young you are, Auntie’s not gonna beat you up today!]
Meanwhile, not far from the boy stood a middle-aged man, looking pretty emotional as he clapped lightly. "That little girl is really gorgeous. Damn, worthy of being my son. Good boy!"
Seeing that, Su Qing couldn’t help feeling a bit pissed. The little girl called him "Daddy Su," after all. If he ever has a daughter of his own in the future... he didn’t even dare picture it. Just couldn’t.
"Heh, alright then, alright. Good boy! [Fuck this shit.]"
With that, Su Qing stormed forward. The man across from him immediately sensed trouble, thinking the stuff he’d just said had been misunderstood as him eyeing the kid’s mom. He hurried over, scooped up his son, and made a run for it:
"Ahem, bro, I just meant your girl’s really pretty, nothing else, okay?"
Su Qing: ???
Fuck, what "nothing else" are you trying to imply? Don’t tell me you...
Thinking that, Su Qing froze mid-stride, then glanced at the landlady, and turned his head to look at Shen Yi and Tang Nan. All three of them were staring at him.
"Ahem, look, this is just a normal reaction from a concerned dad, alright? The little girl calls me Daddy Su. That little brat—he’s clearly gonna bleach his hair and ride a crotch rocket when he grows up. Wen-jie, you should watch out for him in future!" Su Qing said, suddenly feeling nervous.
The three women’s looks got even weirder, and in the end it was Tang Nan who spoke: "Are you telling Qing-jie to watch out for that little brat, or to watch out for that man? Why do you seem more nervous than the three of us?"
"Exactly. Qing-jie’s charm is irresistible; that dad might really have ulterior motives. But you..." Shen Yi’s gaze at Su Qing carried a half-smile.
The landlady covered her mouth and chuckled, "Got it, little brother. Your sis will watch out for both of them from now on!"
Su Qing: ???
"Hey, Wen-jie, don’t set me up like that! I didn’t mean it that way, I was talking about little Yun..."
"I know, sis knows. Don’t worry, look how stressed you are." The landlady clearly understood exactly what was going on, but she was the type who enjoyed a good show and wasn’t afraid of stirring the pot. She kept adding fuel to the fire, to the point Su Qing felt cold sweat breaking out on his forehead.
Suddenly it seemed to him that that old guy’s horoscope was totally incompatible with his. The guy’s son making eyes at the little girl was bad enough, and the old guy himself clearly wasn’t any better. Fine, you want to leave, just leave—why add that last sentence and make things so awkward for me?
