Chapter 545 - 262: A Visit from Lin Ping’s Mother

Chapter 545: Chapter 262: A Visit from Lin Ping’s Mother

While her mother and Anan were catching up, Lin Ping used the time to hurry to the kitchen. She finished preparing the last few dishes and brought them to the table.

Seeing that she was nearly finished, Zhao Ya smiled and put Anan down.

"Anan, be a good girl and watch some TV in the living room. Grandma and Mommy are going to the bedroom to talk."

"Okay."

Zhao Ya stood up and gave Lin Ping a meaningful look. Taking the hint, Lin Ping removed her apron, hung it on the back of the kitchen door, and followed her mother into the bedroom.

The moment she stepped inside, she couldn’t hold back her curiosity.

"Mom, how did you know I moved?"

"Didn’t you tell me?"

Sitting on the edge of the bed, Zhao Ya rolled her eyes at Lin Ping.

"Have you forgotten? A while back, you said you were busy with work and wanted me to come over and help with Anan, so you told me your new address."

"Oh, right!"

It all came back to Lin Ping. She sat down beside Zhao Ya and affectionately took her arm.

"I’m sorry, Mom. I’ve been so busy lately that it completely slipped my mind. But why didn’t you tell me you were coming?"

"And have *you* told me everything?"

Zhao Ya retorted. She patted the back of Lin Ping’s hand, her gentle expression suddenly turning grave.

"Let me ask you, did you divorce Mingchuan?"

Lin Ping’s heart dropped at her mother’s question.

To keep her from worrying, Lin Ping had never mentioned the divorce. She’d only said that she and Shen Mingchuan were going through a rough patch in their marriage.

’How did she find out anyway?’

Seeing Lin Ping’s stunned look, Zhao Ya cut straight to the chase.

"His mother told me. She said that Mingchuan divorced you... What happened? You said you two were just having some issues. Why the sudden divorce?"

"It’s a long story."

Lin Ping pressed her lips together, reluctant to revisit the agonizing relationship history.

But to keep her mother from worrying, she slowly recounted the story, revealing all of the awful things Shen Mingchuan had done.

This included cheating on her, his petty schemes involving the Cat Cafe, and his cold indifference to Anan and their family life.

Lin Ping poured out all the grievances she had endured over the years, and Zhao Ya’s heart ached for her daughter.

"You’ve had it rough all these years."

Zhao Ya gently stroked Lin Ping’s head, her voice then filling with anger and profound self-reproach.

"So that was it! I can’t believe Mingchuan did so many things to wrong you! I must have been blind to ever approve of him as my son-in-law! It’s my fault, dear. I didn’t do my due diligence, and you’re the one who suffered for it."

"It’s not your fault, Mom."

Lin Ping quickly took Zhao Ya’s hand and said softly,

"Let’s let the past be the past. I’m doing much better now."

"That’s good."

Zhao Ya smiled gently. After a moment of hesitation, she continued,

"Let me ask you one more thing. About the divorce with Mingchuan... aside from everything he did, you didn’t do anything to wrong him, did you?"

"Of course not!"

Lin Ping quickly shook her head in denial, then asked, dumbfounded,

"Mom, why would you ask that?"

"Well, his mother is saying that you were the one who wronged her son."

Zhao Ya hesitated for a moment before adding quietly,

"She said you cheated during the marriage, and that he only divorced you after he found out."

"Bullshit!"

Lin Ping, who was normally so gentle and proper she never even cursed, couldn’t help but let an expletive fly. Her face flushed red with rage as she shot up from the bed.

"He was the one who cheated! It was our first wedding anniversary, and that very night I caught him getting a hotel room with his mistress!"

"I still have the video from that night on my phone! If I hadn’t been holding on to some small sentiment for old times’ sake, I would have shown it to his mother ages ago!"

As she spoke, Lin Ping pulled out her phone to show Zhao Ya the video of her catching him, but her mother stopped her, pulling her back down to sit beside her.

"You don’t need to show me. I believe you," she said, comforting her. "Knowing you, you wouldn’t have gotten angry enough to divorce Mingchuan unless he did something completely unforgivable."

"I’m asking about this mainly because I want to know... after he cheated, did *you* do anything to wrong *him*?"

"Well..."

Lin Ping faltered, unable to come up with an explanation.

She had suddenly remembered teaming up with Lin Shen to get revenge on Shen Mingchuan after finding out about his affair.

’But at the time, their relationship had already completely disintegrated. The only thing left was the divorce certificate.’

’What I did... that doesn’t count as wronging him, does it?’

’After all, he was the one who cheated first!’

’Everything I did was because you were the one at fault!’

’Even though we weren’t officially divorced, our marriage was already over in practice.’

Convinced she hadn’t done anything to betray their marriage, Lin Ping shook her head.

"No! I never did anything to violate our marital vows! Mom, don’t you trust me?"

"Of course I believe you."

Zhao Ya patted the back of Lin Ping’s hand, her eyes sweeping over her daughter again. Then, her brow furrowed slightly.

’In her mind, her daughter had always been the quintessential ’good wife and loving mother’ type, always dressing conservatively.’

’Why was she dressed so revealingly at home?’

’Just like one of those immodest women...’

The rather old-fashioned Zhao Ya asked in a stern voice,

"What’s with this outfit you’re wearing?"

Huh?

Lin Ping froze, her face instantly flushing with shame.

Only then did she realize how inappropriate her outfit was. She scrambled to explain.

"Um... I always dress like this at home. It’s just more comfortable, you know."

"Really?"

Zhao Ya still felt something wasn’t right, but she gently admonished her,

"There’s nothing wrong with pursuing beauty and individuality, but Anan is here. You should at least dress more respectably. You’re a mother; you have to set an example, right? What kind of impression does it make, showing so much skin?"

"I know, I know. I’ll go change."

Feeling a bit hurt by the lecture, Lin Ping stood up to change, but Zhao Ya pulled her back by the hand.

"Don’t change yet. I’m not finished talking to you."

Once Lin Ping had sat back down beside her, Zhao Ya continued.

"Alright, I understand the story behind your divorce now. Send me that video you took of Mingchuan and his mistress at the hotel. I’ll show it to his mother. That should stop her from spreading lies."

"From this day forward, our family is done with theirs! We’ll raise Anan ourselves! If we have to, I’ll even go find a job again."

"Thank you, Mom."

Grateful for her mother’s understanding, Lin Ping hugged her arm and smiled softly.

"Actually, Mom, you don’t need to get a job. I’m making enough for my daughter and me to live on. I can even send money home if you need it."

"Didn’t you say the Cat Cafe went out of business?"

Zhao Ya was a little surprised.

"Where are you making money?"

"From my job."

Thinking of how well Lin Shen had been treating her, Lin Ping felt a warmth spread through her heart, and the corners of her lips turned up in an unconscious smile.

"The Cat Cafe did go out of business, but it was bought by someone else. And he hired me to be the manager."

"Now I’m the general manager of the customer service department at his company, and I’m making more than enough for Anan and me to live on."

’General Manager?’

Although she wasn’t sure just how well Lin Ping was doing, Zhao Ya had heard the title "General Manager" enough times on TV dramas to know what it meant.

’That’s a very impressive position!’

’Was her daughter really that capable?’

"You’ve really made something of yourself!"

Hearing that Lin Ping’s life was even better than when she was married, Zhao Ya let out a long sigh of relief and praised her with a smile.

"I never thought my little Ping would become a general manager someday! That’s so impressive! You must be making good money, right?"

"Around twenty or thirty thousand."

This was actually a conservative estimate. If she were to include the pocket money Lin Shen regularly gave her, her monthly income was probably closer to fifty or sixty thousand.

Even so, a monthly salary of twenty to thirty thousand left Zhao Ya completely astonished.

"That much? Your boss must treat you very well! I’ll have to meet him and thank him in person."

"Are you sure?"

A sudden light sparkled in Lin Ping’s eyes, which made Zhao Ya pause.

Just then, another knock came from the door.
