Chapter 1706: Chapter 1646: Beloved by All, Counterpart Group 76
The summer in the Capital is really hot, especially at noon, to the point where you could fry an egg on the pavement.
An Yi hurriedly walked back with a sunshade in her hand.
The heat was extreme, and even with the umbrella, her face was red from the heat, feeling drenched in sweat and thoroughly uncomfortable.
Just as she was nearing home, An Yi was thinking of having a popsicle first and then getting Liu Dalian to make her a bowl of cold noodles, when suddenly someone cut in from the side.
"Senior Sister Pei."
The one who blocked An Yi was a sophomore junior.
The guy was quite tall, probably over six feet, rather skinny, and looked a bit scholarly. He smiled shyly before speaking, "Senior Sister, this is for you."
The guy took out a box with a bow that he didn’t know how long he had been holding.
Anning smiled, "What’s this?"
"It’s a gift for you, Senior Sister. You’re graduating soon, right? Just wanted to wish you success in finding a good job in advance." The young guy was somewhat bashful, smiling nervously.
An Yi accepted it, "Thank you, let me treat you to a cold drink."
"Okay, sure."
The young guy grew even more nervous.
An Yi saw a cold drink shop not far away and took the young guy there, ordering two cold drinks.
The guy reached for his wallet to pay, but An Yi was quicker, pulling out money to settle the bill herself and smiling at the guy, "You go ahead and drink, I have something to attend to at home, so I’ll head off first."
"Senior Sister..." The young guy was quite reluctant.
An Yi smiled reassuringly, "We’ll meet again if fate allows."
As she stepped out of the cold drink shop and walked a few paces, she was stopped by Chu Kaifeng.
More than two years had passed, and Chu Kaifeng seemed more mature.
He had graduated and started working, having outgrown the youthful awkwardness, replaced by mature steadiness with a hint of sharpness.
"Long time no see."
An Yi briefly glanced at him, "Long time no see."
"Found a good job yet?" Chu Kaifeng asked again.
An Yi smiled and shook her head, "I haven’t decided yet, but it should be soon."
After saying this, An Yi planned to leave, but Chu Kaifeng grabbed her hand, "An Yi, I have something to tell you."
"Go ahead." An Yi smiled faintly, taking a sip of her cold drink.
"I..."
Chu Kaifeng was a bit nervous, speaking with a dry voice, "I can help you find a good job. I just hope you can accept me, become my girlfriend, is that okay?"
An Yi took another sip of her cold drink, said nothing, and simply bypassed him to leave.
"An Yi, I mean it,"
Chu Kaifeng called after her.
An Yi didn’t turn her head, "Don’t make me look down on you."
Chu Kaifeng hurried a few steps to block her way again.
An Yi was completely fed up. She had put up with Chu Kaifeng’s harassment for more than two years and really couldn’t take it anymore.
She raised her hand and splashed the entire cup of cold drink onto Chu Kaifeng’s face, "Damn, what do you take me for? Do I, Pei Anyi, need your help to find a job? Who are you looking down on?"
Chu Kaifeng was stunned.
He never expected the usually gentle An Yi to have such a temper.
"Let me tell you, Chu Kaifeng, stay away from me in the future."
Still fuming, An Yi stomped hard on Chu Kaifeng’s foot, then strode off with sway in her high heels.
"You can’t go." Chu Kaifeng’s heart tightened, and despite the pain in his foot, he chased after her.
But before he could catch up with An Yi, he saw a car pull up next to her, the car door opened, and a large hand reached out, pulling An Yi inside.
"An Yi." Chu Kaifeng was terrified, sprinting over and grabbing An Yi’s other arm before the door closed, "An Yi, don’t be afraid, I’ll save you."
"Who are you saving?"
Inside the car, a man dressed in black looked up at Chu Kaifeng.
Chu Kaifeng shuddered at the sight of the man in the car, "Un-Uncle Zhou."
"Hmm." The man nodded coldly, "Let go."
Where would Chu Kaifeng dare to hold An Yi’s arm? He quickly released his grip.
Yet he wasn’t quite resigned, "Uncle Zhou, do you know my girlfriend?"
The man in the car wrapped an arm around An Yi, "Call her Auntie."
Uh?
Chu Kaifeng pursed his lips, speechless for quite a while.
An Yi nudged him, pushing him back before closing the car door, "Let’s go."
The driver stepped on the accelerator, and the car drove past Chu Kaifeng.
Chu Kaifeng was left in a cloud of exhaust and dust, his face turning an unsightly combination of blue and white while staring at the car’s rear.
Inside the car, An Yi pushed the man away, "It’s hot, move over there."
The man didn’t budge, so An Yi moved closer to the car door by herself, "Stop at the next intersection."
The car stopped at the intersection, and An Yi got out, followed by the man, "I’ll take you home."
An Yi shook her head, "No need."
She thought for a moment, "Thank you for helping me out today."
The man leaned against the car, long legs crossed, smiling as he looked at An Yi, "Then how about being my girlfriend? If you’re with me, you won’t have those worries anymore."
An Yi smiled and shook her head, "No."
"Oh?" The man raised an eyebrow, "Why not? I thought you wanted to catch a rich husband? A man as outstanding as I am, sincerely pursuing you, why not consider it?"
"Not interested." An Yi shook her head again, "I’ve seen enough of this love business, not interested. Now I want to focus on my career. Initially, I wanted to find a wealthy man to make my life more comfortable, better, and easier, but now I’ve changed my mind; I want to make a mark in my career. When I’m successful, what kind of man can’t I find?"
An Yi’s expression lightened a bit as she said this, raising her eyebrows, "Whether it’s a youthful and lively one, sunny and cheerful, gentle and refined, athletic, mature and steady, all kinds will be mine to choose from. Wouldn’t that be nice?"
The man’s face darkened slightly, "You really think that way?"
"Of course." An Yi batted her eyes, smiling with enchanting grace, "With what I have, am I worried about not finding a boyfriend? I’m not planning to get married anyway, just want to enjoy relationships, even if it’s a whole lifetime, when one tires, I can switch to another, wouldn’t life be wonderful."
She patted the man’s shoulder, "Just a word of advice, don’t fall for me, or it’ll be heart-wrenching."
After saying this, An Yi turned and stylishly walked away.
The man watched An Yi depart, then turned and got into the car. He took a pack of cigarettes from his pocket, intent on lighting one, but remembering An Yi’s dislike for smoke, he put the pack back into the car instead.
An Yi walked into the community complex with her sunshade, folded it up when she reached the residential building, and as she climbed the stairs, the smile at the corner of her mouth slowly faded.
Today Zhou Zhen had once again proposed becoming her boyfriend, and this wasn’t the first time, nor the second, but the countless instance over these past two years.
An Yi pursed her lips, thinking to herself that this man really is dense, only talking about pursuing her. In the more than two years he’s been pursuing her, he’s been diligent, helped her solve many troubles, and also given her the confidence to confront Chu Kaifeng, but he hasn’t actually given her any substantial benefits.
If you’re sincerely trying to pursue someone, shouldn’t you offer something? Does he really think she, Pei Anyi, is some pure young girl who falls for a few sweet words, a bunch of flowers, or a few gifts?
Hmph, even the guys back in the village know to give her cosmetics, clothes, and shoes. Does Zhou Zhen think she’ll agree without offering something truly enticing? Such easy notions.
Even Chu Kaifeng knows to use a good job as bargaining; Zhou Zhen, that straightforward-thinking man, really considers her to be some high-minded woman indifferent to fame and wealth?
Honestly, when An Yi learned about Zhou Zhen’s background, she was tempted.
It wasn’t because she particularly liked Zhou Zhen, but she was drawn to his conditions.
Yet she couldn’t easily agree to a relationship; agreeing too readily might make Zhou Zhen lose interest quickly.
She spent more than two years keeping Zhou Zhen hanging, gradually showcasing her capabilities and charm, making him fall deeply for her. All the while, she was getting to know Zhou Zhen better.
Now she is quite certain she likes Zhou Zhen well enough; his character, abilities, and looks all meet her standards. She even thought that if Zhou Zhen displayed his prowess or arranged a job, or offered money, she would agree.
But who knew after keeping him dangling for so long, Zhou Zhen still hasn’t caught on.
An Yi is starting to wonder now, if Zhou Zhen continues like this, should she expand her horizons and see if there’s a more suitable candidate out there.
