Chapter 161: Chapter 161: Rescuing the Victims
Chapter 161
"Don’t scream!" Renee Jennings’s brows knitted together as she snapped in a cold voice. "Are you trying to attract the villagers?"
Evelyn Hollis’s eyes widened in shock as she made out Renee Jennings’s face in the dim light. "It’s... it’s you..."
Renee looked at her disheveled state and asked in a low voice, "Do you want to leave this place?"
Evelyn Hollis nodded forcefully.
"Then come with us," Renee said.
The soles of Evelyn Hollis’s feet were worn raw and bleeding, and she walked very slowly.
Henry Stark glanced at Zachary Conway and said quietly, "Help carry Miss Hollis."
"Okay." Zachary Conway walked over to Evelyn Hollis. "Miss Hollis, your feet are injured. Let me carry you."
"No!" Evelyn Hollis recoiled from his touch, her expression terrified and her emotions fraught. "Don’t touch me!"
"Alright, don’t be alarmed." Zachary Conway quickly backed away.
Renee glanced back toward the center of the village, then hesitated for a few seconds before saying, "Evelyn Hollis, I’ll carry you on my back."
"No, don’t!" Evelyn Hollis shook her head forcefully. "I can walk on my own."
Renee’s expression grew serious, her tone firm. "You’re too slow. If the villagers catch up, none of us will get away."
Only then did Evelyn Hollis agree to let Renee carry her.
Watching this scene, Zachary Conway’s face was filled with helplessness and worry. He sighed softly. "I think Renee has it really tough."
Henry Stark pressed his thin lips together, his dark brows slowly knitting.
Renee carried Evelyn Hollis into the first floor. Kyle Morgan wanted to help, but she stopped him. "She’s afraid of men right now."
Kyle Morgan immediately pulled his hands back.
"I’ll do it!" Sawyer paid no mind to the few terrifying snakes still on the floor and hurried forward.
She helped Renee guide Evelyn Hollis to the sofa and poured her a cup of hot water. "Miss Hollis, have some water."
Evelyn Hollis was like someone who had found an oasis in the desert. She took the cup and gulped down the water.
After she finished one cup, Sawyer poured her another.
Evelyn Hollis drank three consecutive cups of water.
Just as Renee was about to ask if she was feeling unwell, Inky, who had been standing watch outside, suddenly flew in through the window, chirping urgently, "Renee, humans are coming after us!"
Renee’s gaze sharpened. "The villagers are after us!"
As soon as she spoke, the expressions of everyone in the hall changed, especially Evelyn Hollis’s.
’I thought I was saved, but now...’
"Take her to the bathroom." Henry Stark’s voice was low and his expression grave. "Kai and Sawyer, you go in with her."
"Roger!" Kyle Morgan and Sawyer responded in unison and took Evelyn Hollis upstairs.
Levi Hollis wiped up the bloodstains Evelyn Hollis had left behind, while Zachary Conway pulled a deck of cards from his bag.
Renee had the few snakes in the hall slither out, then closed the door and sat at the round table to pretend to play cards.
Before long, there was a knock on the main door.
Henry Stark got up to open the door. Chief Lowe was standing at the entrance with several men.
He glanced at them, his tone casual. "What brings you here, Chief? Is something wrong?"
Chief Lowe’s eyes darted around the room as he explained with a chuckle, "Well, a villager was bitten by a snake tonight. I was worried you might have snakes here too, so I brought some men over to catch them."
Hearing this, Henry Stark raised an eyebrow. "Thanks for your concern, but we’ve kept the door shut. Not even a mosquito could get in, let alone a snake."
Chief Lowe laughed again. "Well, since we’re already here, we might as well take a look just to be safe."
"Fine." Henry Stark turned and sat back down on his stool. "We’re in the middle of a card game, so we won’t join you in your search, Chief."
"No problem, no problem. You carry on." Chief Lowe waved his hand dismissively. The moment he turned around, his eyes filled with a sinister glint.
He led his men on a search of the first floor, then ascended the stairs to the second floor, his expression grim.
The person they were looking for wasn’t on the second floor either.
"Uncle!" Kai shouted, pointing at the closed bathroom door.
Chief Lowe walked over and knocked on the door.
"Who is it? Use the toilet downstairs. The two of us won’t be done that quick," Kyle Morgan responded from inside.
Chief Lowe chuckled. "It’s me. I heard a snake got in here, so I brought some men to catch it."
Kyle Morgan opened the door, his hair dripping wet. "What’s up?"
Chief Lowe’s eyes strained to peer inside. "Is there someone else in the bathroom?"
"My girlfriend," Kyle Morgan said with a frown. "Stop looking. You’ll make her shy."
Sawyer peeked out from behind him, her tone laced with annoyance. "What’s the big deal? Can’t we even take a shower without you knocking on the door...?"
"Don’t be angry, don’t be angry," Kyle Morgan soothed her appeasingly. When he turned back to the chief, his expression was stern. "My girlfriend and I are showering. This is really inappropriate."
With that, he closed the door.
Chief Lowe’s mouth twitched. He muttered under his breath, "Young people these days have no shame, showering together..."
Seeing them come downstairs, Zachary Conway asked with a grin, "Find any snakes, Chief?"
"No," Chief Lowe said, then left with his group of men.
Zachary Conway got up, closed the door, and breathed a sigh of relief.
Henry Stark’s phone rang.
He answered the call, a trace of joy appearing in his deep, dark eyes. "Good. Stay in touch!"
When he hung up, Levi Hollis asked expectantly, "Are the personnel from Tarian Province arriving soon?"
Henry Stark nodded. "They’ll be here in an hour."
Hearing this, Renee let out a small sigh of relief and stood up. "I’m going upstairs to check on Evelyn Hollis."
「An hour later.」
The newly formed anti-trafficking task force from the Tarian Province Public Security Department arrived in Yarrowdale Village and surrounded it completely.
Uniformed police officers moved nimbly through the darkness, silently rescuing the trafficked victims.
A lookout near the watchtower saw this, his face instantly paling. He ran in a panic to warn the others.
When Chief Lowe heard the news, he was so furious he flipped a table.
He summoned the village’s key figures to the ancestral hall and gritted his teeth. "How did the cops find this place? Was it that bitch who escaped? Or is there a mole among us?"
Everyone looked at each other, not daring to speak.
After a moment, someone asked, "Old Man Lowe, what do we do now?"
Chief Lowe paced back and forth anxiously. He finally stopped and said in a low, grave voice, "Saving our own skins is what matters. We escape first!"
There was a secret tunnel in the ancestral hall. Chief Lowe led a few men into it to hide.
Inky witnessed the entire process and flew out of the ancestral hall with a beat of its wings.
Chief Lowe never expected that just five minutes after hiding, he would be dragged out by the police.
He was handcuffed.
As he walked out of the ancestral hall, Chief Lowe suddenly caught sight of several familiar figures.
A sudden realization hit him, his face twisted with rage. "You... You’re actually cops!"
Renee and the others stared at him with cold eyes.
"You deserve to die! To die!" Chief Lowe was filled with regret, glaring at them with hateful eyes.
’I never should have let them stay in the village for that paltry sum of money!’
"You’re the one who deserves to die," Renee said coldly. "You’ve harmed so many people. Your sins run deep."
"Who did I harm?" Chief Lowe’s gaze was sinister. "I was helping people! Without me, how many men would never find a wife!"
