Chapter 527: Chapter 527: Pursuing a Pretty Rich Girl
"I already bought it." Renee raised an eyebrow, casually putting the file back in her bag. "You can take your time looking at it when you get home."
Michelle Fuller and Sylvia Brooks also gave Dalton Jenson flowers and gifts.
"Mr. Jennings, happy birthday! May all your wishes come true!"
"Happy birthday, Mr. Jennings. I wish you good health."
"Thank you! Thank you, Michelle and Summer." Dalton Jenson’s face turned even redder. He accepted the flowers, flattered and surprised. "This is the first time an old guy like me has ever received flowers!"
Rhea Dempsey smiled and teased, "Look how happy you are."
"But I think these two bouquets are a better match for you. After all, beautiful flowers should go with a beautiful woman." Dalton Jenson handed the flowers to his wife, then looked at Michelle Fuller and Sylvia Brooks. "You don’t mind if I regift these to your auntie, do you?"
"Of course not."
"Not at all, not at all. I love seeing PDA."
Rhea Dempsey was blooming with joy on the inside, but she feigned annoyance. "Oh, you. All you know is how to put on a show. It’s not like you’ve ever bought me flowers yourself."
"What do you mean I haven’t?" Dalton Jenson retorted. "Didn’t I personally plant flowers for you before?"
Rhea was delightedly smelling the flowers, but when she heard him, she couldn’t help but glare. "Are you talking about those rapeseed flowers you planted?"
Dalton Jenson: "Yeah, you loved eating them back then, didn’t you?"
Rhea: "..."
"Forget it, forget it." She set the two bouquets aside and said irritably, "You’re the birthday boy today, so I won’t argue with you."
After the group sat down, Dalton Jenson still felt like he was dreaming.
’Today’s birthday is so grand. To think so many people are here to celebrate with me.’
In previous years, it was always just Rhea. She would cook him two boiled eggs and a bowl of longevity noodles in the morning, and buy a small cake in the evening.
"Dad, happy birthday." Diana Jennings also presented her gift.
"Ah, thank you, Bella." Dalton Jenson’s fingers were trembling slightly as he took the gift.
’I owe this daughter so much.’
"Grandpa!" Jasmine’s clear, sweet, childlike voice rang out. "My brother and I prepared gifts for you too!"
"Really?" A smile appeared on Dalton Jenson’s face, but the rims of his eyes turned a little red. "Jasmine and Zane are so good to Grandpa."
"Really!" Zane nodded seriously in reply, looking up at Rhea Dempsey. "We let Grandma hold on to them for us."
"That’s right, they’re with me." Rhea quickly pulled two drawings from her tote bag and handed them over.
Jasmine took one of the drawings, walked over to Dalton Jenson, and held it up high. "Grandpa, happy birthday! May you live a long and happy life!"
Dalton Jenson saw a cartoon figure with sparse hair on the drawing, and next to it, three crookedly written words: I love Grandpa.
He couldn’t hold it in any longer and covered his eyes, starting to cry.
Seeing this, Jasmine blinked in confusion, her small voice tinged with sadness. "Grandpa doesn’t like my drawing. Does he think it’s so ugly that he’s covering his eyes so he won’t have to look at it?"
By the end, her voice was already on the verge of tears.
Rhea’s heart ached for her. She quickly soothed her, "Don’t cry, Jasmine. That’s not what your grandpa means. He’s crying because he’s touched. He’s just covering his eyes because he doesn’t want people to see him crying."
Hearing this, Jasmine nodded her little head as if she half-understood. "Oh, so that’s how it is."
"Grandpa." Zane stepped forward, gently tugging the corner of his grandpa’s shirt, and comforted him in a childish voice, "Don’t cry, Grandpa. Here’s a tissue."
Dalton Jenson sniffled, wiped his tears away messily, and crouched down in front of his grandson. He said softly, "Grandpa loves your gifts very much. Thank you, Jasmine. Thank you, Zane."
"But, Grandpa, you haven’t seen my gift yet," Zane said hesitantly.
Dalton Jenson immediately asked seriously, "What gift did Zane prepare for Grandpa? Quick, let Grandpa see."
Zane pursed his lips and held out his drawing, his soft little face full of sincerity. "Grandpa, happy birthday. I hope our family can stay together forever."
This time, it wasn’t just Dalton Jenson who was moved; Rhea was also moved to the brink of tears.
Diana Jennings’s eyes were red, and Renee also felt her own eyes start to burn.
Michelle Fuller sighed with emotion. "That’s the sincerity of a child."
Sylvia Brooks nodded in agreement. "A pure love, just for family."
"Yes, our family will stay together forever!" Dalton Jenson said solemnly, pulling Zane into his arms.
Rhea hugged Jasmine tightly.
Renee and Diana exchanged a smile.
After the birthday dinner was over and they were back home, the first thing Dalton Jenson did was hang up the drawings from Zane and Jasmine, take a picture, and post it on his social media feed to show off.
When Rhea came out of the shower, she saw him still grinning foolishly at the two drawings and teased, "Why don’t you just stay up all night staring at those two pictures?"
Dalton Jenson said with a straight face, "That’s an option. If I’m not tired, I’ll just keep staring."
Rhea: "..."
She shook her head helplessly and muttered, "You’re like a fool."
"Speaking of which..." Dalton Jenson’s tone became a little unnatural. "Rae, I don’t think you’ve given me a birthday present yet."
"What do you mean I haven’t?"
"You did? How come I didn’t see it?"
Rhea was sitting at her vanity doing her skincare routine. She said slowly, "I emptied your shopping cart."
"Huh?" Dalton Jenson gasped and quickly pulled out his phone. "Did you delete all the items I added to my cart?"
Rhea: "..."
’What is wrong with this guy? How can he be so dense?’
She stood up and pointed to the pile of packages in the corner. "I didn’t delete them. I bought them for you. Go on, open them."
"Th-This..." Dalton Jenson stared incredulously at the mountain-like pile of packages, his expression a mix of shock and delight. "Are these all the things I added to my cart?"
"Of course," Rhea nodded.
Dalton Jenson was ecstatic. He immediately rushed to Rhea’s side, hugged her, and gave her a kiss. "Thank you, honey. I love you, honey."
Rhea said irritably, "Get off me! Don’t rub off my face serum!"
"Okay, okay." Dalton Jenson chuckled. "I’m going to go open my packages."
Before opening the packages, he took a photo of the pile and started showing off on his social media feed again.
After Renee got out of the shower, she happened to scroll past the two posts her dad had made and left a comment: [Have you looked at the gift I gave you?]
’The gift I gave him is definitely worthy of its own show-off post.’
「A light rain began to fall that night.」
Henry Stark and Zachary Conway were sitting in a barbecue restaurant. Through the glass, mixing with the smoky air of the shop, they listened to the pitter-patter of the rain outside.
"So, what did you want to talk to me about?" Henry Stark took a sip of his soda, getting straight to the point.
Zachary Conway was a little nervous. He took a deep breath and said in a low voice, "Boss, do you think... if I pursue a girl who’s pretty rich, will people think I’m just after her money?"
"A pretty rich girl?" Henry Stark raised his eyebrows slightly. "Not bad. So you know a rich girl now."
"Sigh." Zachary Conway decided to just tell the truth. "It’s Renee..."
"Barbecue’s here—" The waiter happened to bring over the skewers and a small grill heater just then.
