Book 4, Chapter 199: Crushing The Waves At The Source
Chen Chuan kept his eyes trained on Fenghe Shou and didn’t stop moving. He used the momentum from the punch to take two steps forward and jumped to immediately arrive above Fenghe Shou. He brought his fist up, and as light shone on it, he swung down.
Fenghe Shou plummeted like a comet and crashed into the ground. A large pit formed underneath him. Tons of dirt and gravel scattered outward, and a cloud of dust rose into the air.
Chen Chuan landed firmly. The light around him faded a bit as he walked toward where Fenghe Shou had fallen.
Right when he reached the edge of the pit, he sensed something and brought his arms up. A giant appeared next to him in the smoke, and two hands that seemed like they could cover him rushed over as if they wanted to squash him.
Thunderous booms rose in the air. Chen Chuan blocked the two hands. Their spirit flames melted away, and slowly, Chen Chuan pushed outward.
Boom!
The two hands shattered and turned into wisps of fog that scattered into the wind.
Thunder Listener appeared behind him. While it was still airborne, the smoke around it gathered together, and an illusion of Fenghe Shou appeared. He grabbed the saber, spun around, and dragged the saber along.
Second Form: The Beheader.
Chen Chuan remained calm and moved a burning hand behind him to block the saber. Then, he closed his fist around it and grabbed the blade tightly. Fenghe Shou stared at him for a bit. As the howling wind blew past them, the illusion shattered.
Then, a voice came from the smoke across from him. “I lost, Mr. Chen.”
Chen Chuan had not turned around to look at the attack. He stabbed Thunder Listener into the ground and walked forward. As the wind brushed against his skin, it caused the red scarf around him to flutter.
Once he reached the edge of the pit, he saw Fenghe Shou lying inside it. His body was embedded in the dirt, and his arm was twisted. Half of his face was missing, and smoke was coiling up from it. This wasn’t the only part where smoke was coming out of him. Wisps of golden-white light were shining all over his body.
They were spirit flames Chen Chuan had injected into Fenghe Shou, and they were continuously attacking his mutated tissue so that he couldn’t recover.
Chen Chuan didn’t continue attacking, and the golden-white light faded away. The sound of cracking bones came from Fenghe Shou. Some more time passed, and he stood up again with dirt falling from his body.
Most of his martial arts uniform was damaged, but the tear at his chest was the worst. There was a huge hole there, though the injury on his chest was rapidly healing.
Chen Chuan’s refined force had injured Fenghe Shou greatly. Most of the mutated tissue he could use with his refined force was damaged. The only reason he wasn’t dead right now was because he was a martial arts master and had great recovery abilities. Any other martial artist would have died from that punch.
In truth, if this hadn’t been a sparring session and Chen Chuan hadn’t come here with no intention to kill him, Fenghe Shou wouldn’t have been able to fight back.
“You didn’t use your full strength during the last attack,” Chen Chuan commented. That attack used his mental energy to control his saber. It was subtle and in no way weak.
Fenghe Shou shook his head and said, “It’s meaningless. It wouldn’t have been difficult for you to stop it.”
He cast a glance at the white smoke on him. It might not be raging about anymore, but it was still strong. Feeling resigned, he said, “Even if I managed to hit you, I wouldn’t have been able to hurt you. After that, I would have been unable to continue. I wouldn’t even have the strength to speak. Right from the start, I stood no chance to win.”
If he wanted to hit his opponent’s true body, he needed to break down the true power around him first. If he didn’t get rid of it, he couldn’t land any effective hits. But Chen Chuan’s true power was simply too strong. He could withstand the attacks from Fenghe Shou’s saber with his body, and he looked like he didn’t care about using up his energy.
But if that were all, Chen Chuan wouldn’t have claimed victory firmly in his grasp. The real issue was that Chen Chuan’s battle tactic was specifically targeted against him. It could be said that he managed to counter Fenghe Shou’s every move. “How did you know about my attacks?”
His saber technique’s strength was in sustained refined force. Once he executed a successful attack, his subsequent attacks would come like waves, and each would be stronger than the last. The only chance to make him falter was at the start, but this was a relative term and couldn’t truly be considered a weakness. If he could overpower Chen Chuan even briefly, he could build up his momentum again and show far greater power than what he displayed just now.
But Chen Chuan didn’t give him a chance to build up momentum. He used the same strategy from the start to the end, which nipped Fenghe Shou’s momentum in the bud.
“I saw the school’s name on the stone in front of your school gate. Even though it has been centuries since it was first carved, I could sense perpetual motion from the mental energy coming out of it. That’s why I decided to not give you any chance to build up your momentum.”
“The words Master Chan Dao left behind?”
Fenghe Shou nodded at that. Those two words did display the essence of Fierce Wave School’s technique, but only those whose mental energy was strong could detect it, and even fewer of them would be able to use and counter it.
Among all the martial arts masters he met, Chen Chuan’s strength and speed were definitely the best. He was also great at seizing opportunities. His superior combat decision-making ability and outstanding physical body made him practically invincible. Fenghe Shou had lost fair and square.
He reached out and released his biofield. The gravel around him floated up, and Thunder Listener twitched a bit before jolting up from the ground and returning to his hand.
He returned the saber to its sheath and bowed to Chen Chuan before saying earnestly, “Since I invited you here for a sparring session, that in itself is rude. As a host, I should make up for the energy you lost today. That’s only proper. Please don’t say no.”
Chen Chuan didn’t. “I’ll gladly take you up on your offer, then.”
“This way, please.” Fenghe Shou straightened his back.
Chen Chuan nodded and followed him out. On his way, he looked to the side. There was a giant several dozen meters away, which was around thirty meters tall. He had to be some school master.
The person was sitting on the ground with a gigantic weapon sticking out of his chest. His hands were on the hilt, and Chen Chuan could tell that he had taken his own life.
Due to the powerful light shining on his back, Chen Chuan could only see his outline, but his head was hanging down. From where he stood, Chen Chuan could see that half of his face had become savagely twisted.
He looked away and returned to the platform to grab the Frost King Saber before putting it back into its sheath. Then, he followed Fenghe Shou out of the gap. Fenghe Shou yanked at the chain again, and the grand viewing hall went up.
Once they returned, Fenghe Shou put Thunder Listener on the rack and asked the attendants to give Chen Chuan some clean water to wash himself before he excused himself to go and change. When he came back, he clapped his hands.
A moment later, the limp old man in black walked in and set food on the table.
Chen Chuan took a look. There was plump, moist rice in high-quality ceramic bowls, while rectangular trays held thin, neatly sliced, light red meat.
What caught his attention the most was the fish with its back sliced open. It was positioned vertically, and its stomach was stuffed full of fragrant fruit pieces, plump corn kernels, diced meat cubes, diced roots, and sliced leafy greens with a drizzle of some kind of aromatic broth.
After setting everything down, the limp old man bowed to them again. “I’ve prepared it myself. Please try it.”
Fenghe Shou stared at the fish and said, “This is our national meal. During the old era, the royal family used it to treat important guests who came from lands faraway. After Master Chan Dao created Fierce Wave School, the Gong family invited him and three other sabermasters and warrior generals for a feast. They served it on the table.
“The national fish back then was the king of its territory and was ten meters long. It had been stuffed full of twenty-eight ingredients from the merged space. Only by utilizing the entire military force of the country were they able to deliver such a feast.
“We can’t prepare it for you, but we’ve managed to reproduce a toned-down version of this dish. Including the national fish, we’re presenting you with six ingredients.”
Chen Chuan nodded. Fierce Wave School was really impressive to be able to produce even a toned-down version of this dish. As the food’s aroma wafted out, he could sense his mutated tissue growing restless, which meant that there were plenty of nutrients in the meal.
Fenghe Shou continued, “After Master Chan Dao tasted the dish, he asked the Gong family for the cook.
“In exchange for him, the Gong family asked Master Chan Dao to kill a demon who had snuck into our world. This was their trade.”
He turned to the limp old man. “This servant of mine is a descendant of the cook. His family has been cooking for us for generations.”
The limp old man knelt down and prostrated himself.
Chen Chuan nodded. Practically all of the ingredients harvested from the merged space were eaten raw, because this was the best way to preserve their nutritional value. This was also why they had to be processed in a special way to get rid of all the unnecessary parts and those that couldn’t be eaten. Of course, it also concentrated the nutrients in one place. Non-professionals couldn’t hope to do this.
“Help yourself, Mr. Chen,” Fenghe Shou said and picked up his own bowl of rice. He put a slice of meat into it.
Chen Chuan waited for him to take the first bite before picking up his own bowl and grabbing a large spoonful of the national fish. He poured the broth-soaked ingredients into his bowl to savor it slowly.
