Roadmap to the Boundless Sky

Book 4 Chapter 215: A Suspicious Shadow Creeps In At Dawn

Book 4, Chapter 215: A Suspicious Shadow Creeps In At Dawn

Chen Chuan was at No. 15, Golden Maple Residences, Majestic Light District. He was looking at the scenery through a floor-to-ceiling window.

The buildings in Majestic Light District stood tall and were filled with dazzling lights. This was the administrative and commercial center of Central City, the busiest district in all of Jibei Road.

His new house was an eight-storey villa. It had five floors above ground and three floors underneath. An elevator connected all of them.

The villa occupied quite a large territory. It was highly ventilated, and its lighting was good. Golden Maple Residences was located next to the expensive Lake of Stars, and Chen Chuan’s villa occupied an entire corner of the residential area. It was so big that it could be considered a manor.

The place had a security system, and there was a small mooring point nearby, so he could take an airship wherever he wanted. Now, whenever he wanted to go to sea to train, he didn’t have to go looking for a mooring point.

He also had a resonator nest in the villa. Any resonator who was a good fit for it could be placed in charge of his villa’s defenses and of invading other domains.

Of course, he was only going to use it for special circumstances. Safe Shield was more than enough for daily use.

What made Chen Chuan the happiest about his new villa was the storage room on the fourth floor. It was made according to his wishes and could display all the weapons he had collected up to this point. Even if he got more of them in the future, the room would not be overcrowded any time soon.

The first basement floor was an underground parking lot, and it had a generator along with a space for a domain interference entity. The second basement floor was rather unique. It was connected to a tunnel leading to the merged space. He could drive or walk to the train station leading to the merged space if he wanted to.

His training room was located on the third basement floor. It had been fortified and could withstand regular attacks from martial arts masters. The keyword, of course, was “regular.” Chen Chuan would have to test it to see whether it could withstand his attacks.

Things weren’t the same anymore, though. Since he now had authority to use the Fu-Mu Entity, he could create simulations like the ones in Martial Valor University. Previously, Chen Bitong had borrowed some domain resources from Mr. Quan to train all of his students.

However, the resources required for a Fourth Limit martial artist’s training were just too great, so he did not have enough of them. If he tried to take extra, he might cause a large number of domains to disappear in Central City.

However, Chen Chuan had already thought things through. He might be unable to use those domain resources himself, but he could use them to train his team. In any case, it would be a waste for him not to use them. It would be best to get his friends stronger.

He made himself a warm drink and sipped at it while he thought about the things he needed to do and the questions he had about his training.

An investigator from the Resolution Department called him. “Director Chen, according to our research, Lu Miao abused implants and drugs. He might have functional dysregulation syndrome. He also had multiple records of hurting people. After analysing the fragments of information we had, we’ve come to the conclusion that Lu Gao deleted them.

“According to medics’ diagnosis, Lu Miao was in a highly stimulated state caused by drugs during the accident, and his implants were unusually active. We suspect that a resonator attacked his implants, and Lu Miao took a large amount of drugs. That’s why he did something so irrational. He might not even know that he did it.”

Chen Chuan listened to the end. He had expected this, because a normal, sane person wouldn’t drive a civilian car into an armored motorcade.

“Is he dead?” he asked.

“No. Lu Gao purchased a Class Two service from Concurrent Emergency Care for Lu Miao. He’s currently soaking in a nutrition pod that maintains his vitals. There’s information flying around that Lu Gao is preparing to send Lu Miao through a full-body implant surgery.”

“Okay,” Chen Chuan said. He had noticed that after the accident, Lu Gao hadn’t come to offer an explanation or an apology. Clearly, he knew that no matter what sort of explanation he offered and whether he apologized or not wouldn’t matter. That was why he skipped this step entirely.

Chen Chuan would deal with him after taking over the Defense Bureau.

Once the investigator finished his report, Chen Chuan ended the call, grabbed the Frost King Saber, and went to the elevator intending to go to the training ground to try out the place. Just then, an unknown caller contacted him. Safe Shield told him that the call came from Wansong Agency, which was a company with a high security ranking based outside Jibei Road’s Central City.

Chen Chuan decided to answer it, only to find that it was a voice message.

A gentle voice of a middle-aged woman entered his ears. “Director Chen, we are from Wansong Agency, which provides various private services for martial arts masters, including the transfer of information and retrieval of nutritious food. We were hired to ask whether you would be willing to speak to a client of ours. If you’re willing to do it, you can send us a short reply indicating it.”

Chen Chuan’s gaze sharpened. “Can you find more information about this company, Safe Shield?”

“My apologies, Director Chen. The voice message was sent to your Realm Pass through a special channel, and I can’t find any information about this company in the Resolution Department’s database.”

Chen Chuan sank into deep thought. This company claimed that its clients were martial arts masters, so the client should be one as well. However, it wasn’t based in Central City, so Safe Shield couldn’t find any information about it.

Even though the information network in Jibei Road’s Central City was considered very advanced, each Central City was like a lone island. The central government needed to implement the Skyline Project for the information and resources to travel between them.

Chen Chuan entered the elevator and went to the third basement level. When he stepped into the training hall, he noticed that the place was made entirely of self-repairing biomaterials.

He observed the spacious underground level and nodded. He couldn’t comment on its sturdiness yet, but at the very least, it was a fully enclosed space. After opening a gap, he wouldn’t need to use his biofield to isolate the place anymore. This would save him some energy.

Chen Chuan put down the Frost King Saber and walked to the center of the hall, where he took up one of Blinding Blaze’s stances.

He rested in his new villa for a few days. On the morning of the first of December, he put on his director’s uniform and took his limousine to the Department of Administrative Affairs’ office building. Through the elevator in the exclusive passage, he reached the Defense Bureau’s office area on the seventieth floor. Then, with the Fu-Mu Entity’s guidance, he went to his office.

On his way there, he found that the guards and all hundred or so administrative staff in the Defense Bureau were already waiting for him. When they saw him, they saluted him and said together, “Good morning, Director Chen.”

Chen Chuan gave them a cursory glance and saluted them back. Before coming here, he had already given their profiles a read and had a general understanding of them. He had also spoken to the supervisors, so they were no longer strangers with each other. After looking around, he asked, “Is Deputy Director Lu absent today?”

One of his subordinates answered, “Something happened to his son. He has applied for leave from the Department of Administrative Affairs.”

Chen Chuan nodded. “Please continue with your work.”

He walked down the corridor to his office. After going through multiple verification tests at the door, he walked in and set the Frost King Saber aside before heading to his desk. The red scarf fluttered around his neck, as if batting something away.

Chen Chuan looked around and pinched whatever it was that Hongfu had just smacked off. It was invisible, and he couldn’t feel it between his fingers. It also wasn’t a threat to him, so he would have overlooked it if not for her.

“What is it, Hongfu?” he asked.

“It’s a mental energy composite that can fuse into a Realm Pass and be tracked through certain domain frequencies,” Hongfu stated.

Chen Chuan narrowed his eyes. A mental energy composite? There was no doubt that it came from a martial arts master.

He immediately contacted the Fu-Mu Entity. “Please give me the records of everyone who entered this office over the past three days.”

Soon, he got a recording of the last three days. After Director Bei left, aside from the security guards and janitors, only Lu Gao had come in. Once he left, he wiped out the traces of his entry into Chen Chuan’s office using his authority.

The record he wiped off was in the passive biosentient entity in the office. There was no way he could wipe off the record from the Fu-Mu Entity, and he should know this.

It seemed like he was trying to send some kind of message.

Chen Chuan touched his Realm Pass and sent an order to the Resolution Department. “I suspect that Deputy Director Lu of the Defense Bureau was involved in an attack against me. Seize him immediately and bring him to me.”

In just an hour, Lu Gao was brought to his office. When he saw Chen Chuan, a complicated expression appeared on his face.

Chen Chuan asked everyone to leave before saying, “You know why I brought you here, Deputy Director Lu. Tell me what you know.”

“I was asked to put that thing into your office, but I don’t know what it is,” Lu Gao said languidly.

“When did it happen, and who was it?”

“On the day my son got into an accident. As for who it was, I don’t know. Both the municipal government and the Union are suspects. Anyone who wants to target you needs to have some degree of power to be able to stand against you.”

He brought a hand up and dug out a bloodied implant from his temple before throwing it on Chen Chuan’s desk. “They might have locked down the domain in the area while talking to me, but they couldn’t block everything. This implant contains my entire conversation with them. I believe you should be able to get the clues you need from it.”

Chen Chuan gave it a pointed look before saying, “I’m sure that you can tell that they’re behind what happened to your son.”

Lu Gao looked Chen Chuan in the eye and said grimly, “I do, yes, but I also know that they’re the only ones who can save my son right now. They’re strong, so if I don’t cooperate, I won’t be able to protect myself and my son. That’s why I had to do as they asked.

“While my son has done many stupid things and is generally a useless bugger, as his father, I still want him to live. I’m willing to sacrifice anything for it.

“I’ll work with you at the Defense Bureau and tell you everything I know.”

He sucked in a deep breath, and a dark, murderous look twisted his face. “But after this, I want all those who hurt Xiao Miao to pay!”
