Book 4, Chapter 222: Aggression Hidden In Wind And Sand
An SUV drove through the desert. Chen Chuan sat in the back and watched an endless wilderness pass by him. In the beginning, he could see some shepherds, but later, he couldn’t see any people. All he saw were a few wild horses in the distance.
Veshahan wasn’t large, but Sarland was far from Vakrahn Central City. It took around half a day to get there by car.
Of course, Chen Chuan could arrive sooner, but he was most likely going to have to fight against the martial arts master there. He didn’t know how strong the man was, and he wasn’t going to underestimate him just because he was from a smaller country. Besides, Chen Chuan was abroad, so he couldn’t tell what could go wrong, so he didn’t want to spend too much of his energy before the fight.
He had reached Vakrahn Central City in the morning. In less than two hours, he had entered the city and got his answers from Fang Zhuoying. Then, he set off for Sarland. It was now around 5:30 p.m.. The sun was about to set in Veshahan.
Just then, the wind grew stronger and lifted the sand from the ground. When the driver saw that the view before him was getting blurry, he checked the sky and turned to Chen Chuan. Once he removed his scarf, he shouted, “A storm is incoming, sir! Should we look for a place to hide?!”
“How long does a sandstorm last?” Chen Chuan asked.
The few words had made the driver swallow some sand, and he spat it out before speaking up. “They don’t last too long in this season, but it’s still going to blow for around three hours!”
“How far are we from Sarland?” Chen Chuan continued.
“No more than three hundred kilometers!”
Chen Chuan nodded. “Find a place to hide, then. I’ll continue on my own.”
The driver was stunned, but he didn’t try to dissuade Chen Chuan. He only nodded obediently.
Before he set off, his leaders had told him that he shouldn’t ask any questions about anything Chen Chuan wanted to do. He wasn’t to stick his nose into it. All he needed to do was to follow the commands, so he wrapped his scarf around his neck and got out of the car.
Chen Chuan pushed the car door open and got out, then took a look at the sky. Perhaps it was due to the incoming sandstorm, but the sky had turned a dull yellow, even though it had been turning steadily dark a moment ago. It was as if the sand had blended together with the sky.
Since they were traveling through a large wilderness, Chen Chuan brought Dawncall. Throughout the entire journey, it had been following behind him. Due to the sandstorm, however, it couldn’t fly anymore, so it needed to find a place to hide.
He made a sign at the sky. Dawncall chirped shrilly and dived down.
Chen Chuan turned his gaze forward and pushed his hat down. Light shone faintly on his body, and he vanished. A moment later, a thunderous clap rang through the desert. The sandstorm was split in half and moved to the side. The sand tumbled around and only merged together after a long while. Right at the tip of the split was something flashing like lightning. In an instant, it went into the distance.
Chen Chuan ran forward. When the sky was about to turn dark, he reached a sandstone cliff.
This should be Sarland. In the past, it was one of the places of worship for Veshahan. At the moment, Chen Chuan could see rays of light coming from within it. Even with the sandstorm trying to hide it, the light in the distance was unmistakable.
Since the Great Shun Republic’s intelligence officers didn’t know much about the place, Chen Chuan had thought that it had tight defenses. It was only now that he realized that aside from a few sentry towers on the sandstone cliff, there weren’t any forts or bunkers around the city. It was so crudely made that it didn’t look like the main base of a resistance group.
It was possible that they believed that they didn’t need such things, because they had a martial arts master protecting them.
This wasn’t entirely wrong. Considering Veshahan’s military strength, it was impossible for them to send a large number of soldiers. Even if they came here, they wouldn’t be able to stop the martial arts master from killing them out in the desert. Unless Veshahan sent another martial arts master to deal with him, normal fortifications and bunkers were completely meaningless.
The sandstorm grew stronger. Chen Chuan stopped in front of the cliff and took out a mask that seemed to be made of jade and had a red vertical line on its brow. The red scarf fluttered behind him. The sandstorm blew past his overcoat, but when the sand got a certain distance away from him, its momentum disappeared, and it got suspended in the air for a moment before starting to spin around him. From a distance, it looked like a hole had appeared in the dense sandstorm.
With the mask on his face and the Frost King Saber in his hand, Chen Chuan stepped forward.
There were quite a number of sentries wearing windproof masks and ski masks in the sentry posts. All of them were lax. They had their backs against the wall of the sandstone cliff and were drinking horse milk wine as they chatted with their companions. Laughter echoed from time to time.
Whenever a sandstorm arrived, their guard was at its lowest. After all, who in their right mind would come during a sandstorm? That was absolutely illogical. Besides, who would dare to attack a martial arts master’s base?
If the guardian god of Vakrahn Central City had wanted to come, he would have done so a long time ago. According to their own guardian god, the one in Vakrahn Central City had long since become a lap dog of the Great Shun Republic. He was like an old wolf in the desert. His teeth and claws were no longer sharp, and his fur had fallen off a long time ago. All he could do was curl up in the city and whine while looking outside with sinister eyes. He didn’t dare to fight against the wild beasts invading his home.
They believed this and that their own guardian god could break them out of foreign countries’ influence so that Veshahan could truly become independent. Then, under Damolite the War God’s protection, their country would rise to power.
A sentry who was obviously a martial artist walked about inside one of the sentry posts. His guard wasn’t down, unlike that of the others. He was wary of his surroundings and occasionally looked out with a sharp gaze. When he did it again, he suddenly tensed up and strode to the observation window. After taking a few more looks, he shouted, “Someone’s here! Get up! Grab your guns!”
When the others heard this while drinking horse milk wine, they got up in a panic, grabbed their guns, and pointed down. However, the sun had set, and a sandstorm raged outside, so visibility was low. They could only fire blindly downward. It was useless aside from giving them a boost of courage and bringing about chaos.
The martial artist ran to a spotlight and moved it around. After searching for a moment, the light finally landed on the intruder.
Chen Chuan didn’t bother to avoid it. He didn’t even look up and simply continued onward at the same pace as before. His dancing red scarf and the red, vertical line on his mask made the martial artist shiver.
For some reason, fear rose within him, and he shouted, “Right there! Fire!”
The sound of gunshots tore through the air, and sparks from muzzles lit up the darkness. However, even if they had the spotlight helping them, they were rather far away and weren’t good shots, so not a single bullet landed on Chen Chuan.
As he got closer, their accuracy improved. Then, the machine guns started firing as well. However, when their bullets were several dozen meters away from him, they slowed down and fell on loose sand.
When the martial artist saw this, his eyes flew wide open in shock, and he trembled. He gulped and took a few steps back before turning around to run away.
By then, Chen Chuan had reached the base of the cliff. He jumped up and instantly got up on a platform that was more than twenty meters tall. While his feet settled, the people were stunned, then started shouting like coyotes. They aimed their guns at him and pulled the triggers. Even when they emptied their magazines, they kept pulling at the triggers.
The next moment, it was as if something invisible had swept past them. Their eyes rolled back, and they collapsed. The area around Chen Chuan then became quiet again.
He looked forward and walked into the building carved right into the sandstone cliff. The martial artist had run inside it.
Chen Chuan seemed to be walking at a moderate pace, but after two steps, he moved in a flash and appeared in the distance. Then, he disappeared again.
There were loads of guards and armed combatants inside, but when Chen Chuan walked past them, they collapsed with loud thuds against the floor.
After two minutes, he saw the martial artist running into a spacious hall with a dome-shaped ceiling. When he was inside, he stumbled forward and cried out to the tall figure sitting in front of him. “Damolite, t-there’s—”
Halfway through, he lost consciousness and collapsed. His face hit the floor.
A moment later, footsteps appeared outside, and Chen Chuan showed up at the door. When he looked inside, he saw a half-naked, built man with his entire body covered in scars. He was currently sitting while pouring horse milk wine into his mouth. Some of it spilled down his scar-covered chest.
Martial artists usually didn’t drink wine. Of course, just a bit wasn’t going to affect them, and alcohol didn’t affect martial arts masters at all. However, there were certain deeper-level principles involved in their refusal to drink alcohol, and most people were willing to follow them. Martial arts masters could also easily get rid of any scars, so the man keeping them was an intentional act.
This martial arts master seemed to have deviated from the usual path. Chen Chuan wondered whether this was an oath he swore when he reached the Fourth Limit, or whether that was just how he was.
He plunged the Frost King Saber into the floor and walked in. “Sir, you must be Atamur of Veshahan. I came here to retrieve something from the Great Shun Republic. Please return it to us.”
After taking another mouthful of wine, Atamur crushed the wine cup and threw it away before wiping his mouth. As he stood up, he said, “I just knew that the Great Shun Republic wouldn’t be able to sit still. All your talks about wanting a negotiation were a lie. You were bound to send someone sooner or later.”
Once he straightened his back, he released his biofield and let it crash against Chen Chuan’s. The edges where they pushed against each other began to show faint cracks.
“You’ve stolen so many resources and talents from us and sucked most of our blood, but now, you’re unhappy that we took a stupid rock from you?”
He took the jade fragment from his pocket and tossed it in the air a few times before slamming it down on an armrest so hard that it sank into the wood. “If you want it, give me what I want!”
