Doted By The Regent King

Chapter 1955 - 1893: Admitting Defeat

Chapter 1955: Chapter 1893: Admitting Defeat

Wufu had absolutely no experience raising children. Even with her own biological younger brother, she’d only watched over him for a few months, and most of the time she’d just played with him. The rest had all been taken care of by the wet nurse or even Hua Wushuang.

And now, Empress Dowager Mo wanted her to be the wet nurse in charge of raising the Little Prince?

Seeing Wufu’s face full of astonishment, Empress Dowager Mo said, "You’re his Imperial Aunt, and someone he trusts. With you, this child will be much safer. Besides, if you raise him, no matter what happens in the future, he’ll always remember this kindness."

Wufu, however, felt a bit uneasy. She wasn’t the kind of person who coveted favors. If the first thing you think about when doing something is what favor you’ll earn, if you go into it calculating, then you might as well not do it at all, because that’s fake. Whether your sincerity is real or false—so long as the person isn’t a fool—they’ll be able to feel it.

Most importantly, she really didn’t want to end up like Empress Dowager Mo, raising a white-eyed wolf who’d turn around and bite her.

Empress Dowager Mo cast Wufu a sidelong glance and immediately knew what she was thinking. Without even pausing to think, she snatched up a little wooden puppet beside her and tapped Wufu on the head. "What kind of messy nonsense is rattling around in that brain of yours? Where are you seeing so many disasters like that? He’s only a few years old!"

"Ow," Wufu yelped, rubbing her nose. "Royal Mother, there’s a term called ’mother complex.’"

"What the hell! You’re basically saying your own teaching is no good. The child is only four in full years, still a blank sheet of paper. As long as you guide him, he’ll grow up following the personality you shape for him!" Empress Dowager Mo’s True Qi was practically flaring up in anger.

Wufu wrinkled her nose.

"Royal Mother, there are so many Concubines in the Harem..."

"I can say with absolute certainty, none of those people care for him as genuinely as you do." Empress Dowager Mo let out a cold laugh. "Just you wait. Even if the Noble Concubine and Virtuous Concubine are heartbroken to death right now, once they recover, they’ll definitely stop at nothing to snatch away Xiao Five’s right to be raised."

Their own sons were dead—yes, they were heartbroken—but they weren’t stupid. They’d know exactly whom to cling to in order to preserve their glory and riches, especially when the Emperor’s condition wasn’t looking too good!

And in this imperial palace, where are you going to find any fools?

Empress Dowager Mo herself certainly wasn’t one, which was precisely why she wanted Wufu to raise this child. First, it suited her temperament, and second, it was part of a long-term plan; one always had to think a little on behalf of future generations!

Who knew what the future would look like? Better to accumulate a bit more human sentiment; lofty detachment was the most useless thing of all!

Wufu wasn’t stupid either. She glanced at the Little Prince, only to find him looking right back at her. His big eyes were like a young deer’s, timid yet tinged with a pleading, ingratiating look.

Poor little thing with no sense of security!

"This child was born frail to begin with. If he hadn’t run into you today, I fear he might already have..." Empress Dowager Mo let out a quiet sigh. "It’s his good fortune as well."

"Royal Mother, if I say I can’t do it, will you scold me for being heartless?" Wufu gave a wry smile.

Empress Dowager Mo snorted a laugh. "Why would I waste breath scolding you? I’ll just say this: if you agree to take responsibility for him following you, then you handle it yourself. I won’t interfere!"

The little fellow sensed the odd tension in the air and had already stood up, looking at Wufu with some panic, as if terrified she might run off.

Watching Empress Dowager Mo play the rogue, Wufu thought to herself that her one moment of kindness in saving someone had turned into her digging a pit for herself to jump into.

As they say: a pit you dig yourself—you have to fill it in even if you’re crying, right?

Wufu let out a long sigh. "Fine, then you’ll follow me for now. But let’s be clear: if you turn out crooked, you can’t blame me!"

Empress Dowager Mo said, "If you don’t want to raise a snake, then you’ll naturally put your heart into it."

Wufu’s mouth twitched uncontrollably. Ginger really is spicier when it’s old—Empress Dowager Mo was using pure shamelessness to crush her!
