Chapter 2013: Chapter 1951: Wufu Plays Dumb
Wufu did not go to the palace chambers of Consort Lan and Worthy Consort, but changed her mind and invited both to the Snow Melting Pavilion within the palace.
The Snow Melting Pavilion is a Warm Pavilion, with underfloor heating, facing the Imperial Garden, offering a view of the garden’s snow scene. If it weren’t for the mourning period, Wufu would indeed wish to call for some wine and music to truly enjoy this snow.
Consort Lan received Wufu’s invitation and felt quite displeased. Although she was not the Empress, Empress Song had been deposed, and the former emperor had not appointed another empress. Among the former emperor’s concubines, she held the highest position.
A First-Class Consort going to an appointment with a Princess Consort — a great humiliation. But considering her current predicament and the other’s identity and stature, Consort Lan could only grit her teeth and come.
What of being a First-Class Consort? How does that compare to someone who holds real power?
Being invited by the other, she thought she must have been favored. However, upon arriving before the Warm Pavilion, she saw her nemesis, Worthy Consort.
Upon seeing each other, both faces looked a bit unsightly, brows furrowed. What’s the meaning behind Princess Consort’s invitation?
"Hmph!" Consort Lan took a step ahead, entering the Warm Pavilion first.
Worthy Consort frowned but, thinking of her father’s words, quickly followed inside.
Inside the Warm Pavilion, Princess Consort of Jin was sitting by the window, resting her chin, looking out. Beside her, two maidservants were preparing tea, its fragrance mingling with a light floral aroma.
They looked over and saw the Small Red Furnace with a pot of plum blossoms beside it. Under the heat of the charcoal, the plum blossoms bloomed brightly, their scent penetrating.
The maidservants gave a reminder, and the Princess Consort of Jin looked over, beckoning them: "You’ve come, have a seat."
No intention of standing to greet them.
The two walked over, deliberated for a moment, then bent their knees in a salute: "Princess Consort of Jin."
"No need for formalities, we’re all young people here, let’s relax, sit." She received the salute while sitting, yet had no intention of rising to return it.
How disrespectful!
Suppressing their displeasure, Consort Lan and the others moved to sit down.
"You’ve invited me over; it’s cold and I’ve just finished a month of mourning. I didn’t feel like going back and forth, so I invited you here to sit and talk." Wufu gestured to the tea in front of them: "Try some, it’s said to be tribute Da Hong Pao."
Worthy Consort curled her lips, took a sip, and said: "Good tea!"
Consort Lan listened, sneering disdainfully.
"I also think it’s good." Wufu smiled at the two: "Well, what did you want to talk to me about?"
The corners of their mouths twitched involuntarily. Who’s this direct?
Worthy Consort was still deliberating what to say, while Consort Lan already took out her handkerchief and started to cry, "The former emperor departed too early; my heart is bitter..."
The heart aches bitterly, yearning to follow my lord—yet my parents are alive, and I cannot be selfish. But I think day and night of the former emperor, and also miss the departed Eldest Imperial Son. These thoughts make my liver and heart ache, sleepless at night, with no appetite—it’s all because there’s no refuge, living alone holds no meaning...
Consort Lan’s intentions were more or less this—as she looked at Wufu, she said: "Princess Consort, you are still young. You do not understand, do not know the feeling of a mother losing her child. I truly wish I could follow them or exchange my life for theirs."
After quite a ramble, she glanced at Wufu, seeing her simply watching without blinking. Her heart somewhat panicked, but her face remained forcedly calm.
"Princess Consort?"
"So are you trying to complain to me?" Wufu feigned ignorance.
Worthy Consort burst into laughter, quickly covered her mouth with the handkerchief, but it was already too late, earning a fierce glare from Consort Lan.
