Chapter 415: Exhausted
Hearing Yi Chen clearly state what she wanted his help with, even before she could properly put it into words, an awkward expression formed on her face as she said, after a nod.
"Y-Yes... Will Brother Chen be willing to join my team?" she asked the very next moment, with uncertainty and hesitation evident in her voice.
"Of course I will join your team! Silly girl, you’ve been hesitating all this while just to ask something so simple of me?" Yi Chen asked the very next moment with a frown evident on his face.
The Zhou Mei he knew would have readily asked something like this if she needed his help. Therefore, he was finding it a bit difficult to make sense of her current actions.
"W-Well..." Zhou Mei answered with a pursed smile, "B-Brother Chen has already helped me so many times, and moreover, after joining the sect, you must have many plans of your own, so I was worried that you won’t be able to-"
"Stop thinking so much with that pea-sized brain of yours from now on. If you ever need my help, then ask for it. Isn’t it only natural that I’ll help you at this point?" Yi Chen rolled his eyes while replying, controlling his urge to flick her exposed forehead with his index finger.
"B-Brother Chen..." A warm feeling instantly welled up in Zhou Mei’s heart when she heard Yi Chen’s words, but her expression froze the very next moment.
’Wait... did he just say?’
Her eyes slowly widened in realisation as she repeated what she had just heard.
"P-Pea-sized brain?!" she exclaimed in dismay the very next moment and looked at Yi Chen while saying, "From what angle does it look like I have a pea-sized brain? Huh? From what angle?!"
"..."
A little taken aback by her reaction but not wanting to go down easily, Yi Chen doubled down instead of apologising.
"Isn’t that true, though? If you didn’t have it, then you would have directly asked me instead of wasting your time thinking about so much nonsense..." he muttered in an obvious tone while waving his finger as if he was lecturing her.
"Take it back!" she exclaimed the very next moment.
"Take back what? I only said what’s true, though." Yi Chen played dumb and said while observing her with amusement.
"I don’t have a pea-sized brain! I’ve gone through so many books in the last few months, so there’s no way that’s possible. So, take it back! Right now!" Zhou Mei exclaimed as her voice began to turn shaky.
’The hell... is she about to cry just because of a joke?’ Yi Chen’s expression couldn’t help but turn weird when he noticed the tiny traces of tears welling up in her eyes.
’No, I can’t let that happen. It would become too troublesome if she started crying now...’
Thinking along those lines, he immediately thought of a countermeasure and snickered loudly the very next moment while meeting Zhou Mei’s eyes.
"Oh really? If you don’t have a pea-sized brain, then why are you getting offended? The very fact that you’re denying it so profusely only proves that, in actuality, you really have a pea-sized brain, hahaha!"
"Y-You...You!" The tears which had been welling up in Zhou Mei’s eyes wavered before being submerged under the rage that took over her being.
"I hate you! I didn’t even tease you in the first place, yet you’re doing this! I hate you!" Zhou Mei raged as a flurry of light slaps soon landed on Yi Chen’s arms one after another.
Pat! Pat! Pat!
However, seeing those actions instead of anger or irritation, a trace of relief welled up in Yi Chen’s eyes.
’Indeed, the best way to tackle tears is to make the other party so angry that they completely forget about it in the first place!’ he thought with a sense of pride welling up in his heart for successfully proving his own hypothesis in real time.
’But still... these tiny strikes really sting.’ He thought, seeing that Zhou Mei was showing no signs of stopping and kept hitting him on the arm incessantly.
"Alright, alright, Little Mei, I get it that you really hate me, but if you keep on hitting me like this, then I’ll also start hating you in return..." he muttered while gesturing for her to calm down, thinking that he would now have to spend a few minutes pacifying her so that she would finally stop hitting him.
However, the moment he finished those words, her tiny fist that was just about to land on his arm again froze in mid-air as she pulled her hands back the very next moment.
"Little Mei, you..." Yi Chen couldn’t help but look surprised, not expecting her to agree to his words so easily.
Tch
Not replying to Yi Chen’s words, she clicked her tongue in annoyance and, with her hands folded, started walking ahead of him the very next moment.
Since they were already nearing the disciple’s residential area, she only needed to walk for a few more minutes, and she would be back at her quarters.
"Little Mei, where are you going? The dining hall is in the other direction." Yi Chen said from behind, seeing the direction in which she had started to walk.
"Don’t talk to me!" Zhou Mei snorted loudly, fury evident in her voice, but as she did so, she turned towards the right direction and started walking towards the dining hall.
"This girl..."
Yi Chen couldn’t help but shake his head with a helpless smile, seeing her actions.
A while later, with their plates filled with food, they soon took their seats next to Qin Yao and others who had already reserved a spot at their table for the two of them.
What followed was a hearty meal that further helped everyone bond with each other to a much deeper level. This could clearly be seen when they bid each other good night after finishing their dinner.
It was especially the case with the two women who had become a new part of their group today. Both of them were in their mid-twenties and were in the Seventh and Eighth Meridian Refinement Stages, respectively.
With facial features almost similar to each other, one would assume that they were sisters, but in fact they weren’t and had met each other for the first time only after entering the sect.
Luckily, their heights were different, so it became easier for everyone to distinguish them by their names.
The taller one, who was at the Seventh Meridian Refinement Stage, was called Chen Lin, while the shorter one was called Xin Ye.
"See you tomorrow then, Sister Lin and Sister Ye." Yi Chen nodded towards them after doing the same with Zhou Mei and the rest before leaving for his quarters.
However, the two women didn’t leave instantly but instead turned towards Dong Yun, who had yet to leave.
During the period Yi Chen and Zhou Mei were gone, Dong Yun had meshed well with the two of them, and in a way it wouldn’t be wrong to say that they had kind of become his underlings.
"Sisters, I hope you remember all the great stories about Senior Brother Chen which I’ve shared with you this evening..." As Dong Yun said those words, he saw the two of them nodding at these words and continued, "... Spread it well amongst all the other women in the women’s quarters so that they too are aware of just how great Senior Brother Chen is."
"Leave it all to us, Brother Dong Yun. We’ll do our utmost to spread Senior Brother Chen’s feats amongst them." Xin Ye nodded with assurance evident in her eyes.
"Good." Dong Yun nodded at the two of them before taking his leave.
...
By the time Yi Chen walked inside the residential quarters, it was already closing in on eight in the evening, and exhaustion had started to take over him.
As he walked upstairs towards his room, he had started massaging his head along the way, which had been aching for a while now.
It wasn’t just because of how exhausting and long his day had been, but also because of the fact that he had used almost all of his spiritual energy in the previous attack, leaving just enough in the tank to keep himself from falling unconscious.
[Spiritual Sea: 0.11 / 198.57 (Recovery: 8 hrs of Sleep)]
It was also for this reason that the moment he entered his room, instead of changing into a fresh pair of robes, he fell on top of his bed like a log, completely lifeless.
’Yeah... I just need to rest for eight hours, and all my tiredness would be gone...’ he thought to himself as he started drifting into his sleep.
However, an internal voice soon made him push himself off the bed.
He had yet to practice the three basic moves Grand Elder Jian had taught him and then cultivate, lest the cultivation buff he had received go to waste.
"...F*ck,"
He cursed, thinking about all the work he still had to do before he could fall asleep as he massaged his forehead, which was stinging from the stabbing pain.
’First, let me do something about this headache...’
With those words, he took out a clay pot from his storage ring the very next moment.
"It’s been a while since I’ve used the water from the mystical pond to replenish my spiritual energy..."
He muttered to himself before taking in a few gulps of the refreshing water that pushed his spiritual energy right above 100 points in just two small gulps.
"Yeah, this much should be enough," he muttered, feeling his headache dissipate the very next moment.
The next moment, he placed the clay pot back into his ring before getting changed into a fresh set of training robes.
A couple of seconds later, he went out.
