Overpowered Resident Doctor

Chapter 520 - 519: No Time Not Going

Chapter 520: Chapter 519: No Time, Not Going

Phoenix Tail Mountain, the Wang family villa!

Wang Chuan stood on the third-floor terrace, sipping red wine and admiring the star-filled sky. From the corner of his eye, he noticed a car’s headlights pierce the treeline along the mountain road.

A moment later, he heard the clear sound of an engine, along with a few barks from Helen that were all bark and no bite.

Another minute passed, and the car pulled to a stop before the gate.

Wang Chuan glanced down at his watch. It was 10:12 PM.

He took out another wine glass, poured some red wine, and placed it on the round, woven-rattan table. He then sat down in the wicker chair beside it...

Less than ten minutes later, Zhong Xinyi, dressed in a light nightgown, walked out onto the terrace. She sat down in the wicker chair beside Wang Chuan, picked up the glass of red wine, and took a sip.

"You still know how to enjoy life, as always..."

Wang Chuan let out a soft scoff. "Just finding pleasure in the bitter moments. A way to numb myself, that’s all."

After a moment’s pause, he asked, "Are the real estate talks over?"

Zhong Xinyi shook her head. "It’s a multi-billion-dollar deal. How could it be over so quickly?"

"Both sides were just feeling each other out. We’re taking a break to regroup before the second, more intense round of talks."

Wang Chuan’s gaze fell on the ghastly, twenty-centimeter-long scar on her right arm. He sighed softly. "Yanyan can have her surgery by the end of the year. You don’t have to torture yourself like this anymore."

"You should get your own scars fixed, too."

Zhong Xinyi glanced at the scar on her arm and said nonchalantly, "It’s been so many years. I’m used to it."

She added with a self-deprecating smile, "To be honest, these scars have become a kind of talisman for me."

"They help me scare some people off, and they’ve saved me from being forced into things a few times."

Wang Chuan fell silent for a moment before saying slowly, "You’ve fought your way to success now. Why not come home in glory and build your career here?"

Zhong Xinyi shot him a look. "Easy for you to say. The foundations of my company—the real estate developments, apartment projects, all the brokerage services—are over there. I can’t just pack them up and bring them back."

After a moment of silence, she suddenly asked in a low voice, "That other line of work... are you really determined to quit for good?"

Wang Chuan grunted in agreement. "Play with fire long enough, and you’re bound to get burned. I’ve been lucky so far, but that doesn’t mean my luck will hold out forever."

"In the early years, I did it willingly to raise money for Yanyan’s medical expenses and for your business’s start-up capital."

"Later, I had no choice but to continue."

"Now is the time to make up my mind and wash my hands of it for good. Otherwise..."

Wang Chuan said with a sigh, "That kid, Feifan, is getting more and more attention from the higher-ups. I’d wager he even has state protection watching over him in secret."

"As someone close to him, I’ve probably been put on the radar of the relevant departments..."

Wang Chuan heaved a sigh and added in a solemn tone, "Xinyi, you should get out as soon as you can, too."

Zhong Xinyi let out a soft sigh. "Once you get involved in certain things, getting out isn’t so easy."

Her expression brightened. "But the good news is, the big shot I work with is also looking to make a change. That’s why he’s considering investing in this real estate project back home."

Zhong Xinyi added thoughtfully, "I’ll move the part of the operation you’re responsible for over to Latin America."

"Over in Latin America, money can solve any problem. It’s not like here, where things are so troublesome and there’s so much to worry about."

She then asked with concern, "And things at the Affiliated Hospital... have you squared everything away?"

Wang Chuan nodded. "I haven’t been a department head all these years for nothing. The misappropriated medical supplies... I’ve taken care of them in the accounts. An audit won’t turn up any problems."

"That’s good..."

Zhong Xinyi raised her glass and took a large swallow, then chuckled. "You’re not in too deep, so it’s good for you to make a clean break."

"If anything should happen to me, Yanyan will have you to look after her. She won’t be alone."

Wang Chuan sounded emotional as he said, "Xinyi, why don’t you just give up everything abroad and come back?"

"We can live a perfectly good life here!"

"And don’t tell me your hands are tied!"

Zhong Xinyi downed the rest of the wine in her glass and met Wang Chuan’s gaze. "What if I told you I don’t want to? Would you understand?"

She rose and walked to the railing of the terrace, gazing into the distance.

In the distance, the city of Binhai was shrouded in a vast, hazy glow.

"When I’m taking a huge risk, helping a wanted fugitive escape according to a plan and route I designed..."

"...that rush of adrenaline... it’s intoxicating. I find it addictive."

"Chuan, I can’t go back to my old life anymore..."

Wang Chuan came to stand beside Zhong Xinyi, joining her in gazing at the city’s distant glow.

"Xinyi, I understand."

"You’ve been a restless and daring soul ever since you were a child."

"If you’d been born in a time of war, you’d have been either a bandit queen or a female general..."

Wang Chuan couldn’t help but chuckle. "Everyone in our parents’ generation used to say that we were born in the wrong bodies..."

「Meanwhile, at Zuimo Court.」

Reclining in bed, Yu Suye was leaning against a large stuffed pug and reading a medical journal when she heard the sliding door open.

She looked up to see Yan Feifan walk in, pillow in hand.

Yu Suye quickly scooted over, asking, "Shouldn’t you be asleep right now?"

Yan Feifan snuggled up next to Yu Suye, leaning back against the plush pug doll as well.

"I pretended to be asleep. It was easy to get my sister to leave."

He added in a disgruntled tone, "All she can think about right now is that villa. She’s hardly paying any attention to me."

Yu Suye couldn’t help but chuckle. "After a fifty-million-yuan windfall just dropped into her lap, it’s a miracle your sister is still bothering to make sure you go to sleep at all."

Yan Feifan hmphed, then glanced at the medical journal in Yu Suye’s hands. "What are you reading?"

"An article on treating complex ankle injuries..."

Yu Suye placed the journal on the nightstand and gave a long stretch, limbering up.

"So, are you scared again tonight?"

Meeting her teasing gaze, Yan Feifan said defensively, "I was just worried you’d feel unsafe after finding out someone broke into our room so easily. I came over specifically to keep you company."

"If you’re not scared, I’ll go right back!"

"I am, I am! I’m terrified,"

Yu Suye quickly grabbed Yan Feifan as he made a show of getting up, then nestled against him with a look of feigned fragility.

Yan Feifan seized the opportunity to wrap an arm around her, while his other hand began to wander naughtily.

At first, Yu Suye let out a few demure murmurs, but it wasn’t long before her body began to move, actively responding to his touch.

Just then, the sound of heavy footsteps—THUMP, THUMP—came from outside the room.

Along with it came the sound of a saxophone playing "Jasmine Flower."

"Feifan, your phone has been ringing for ages."

"It’s probably the hospital..."

Yan Feifan was beyond frustrated.

But an emergency call from the hospital was one he had to take.

As he started to get up, he noticed something amiss and quickly grabbed a blanket to cover his lower body. He then shouted, "Come in, Sis! Su Ye and I are just discussing a medical case."

Yan Ziruo, dressed in her pajamas, entered the room and tossed the phone to Yan Feifan with a look of disdain.

Yan Feifan caught the phone and glanced at the screen. It was the landline from the on-call room at the plastic surgery center.

"What is it?" Yan Feifan’s tone was foul.

"Mr. Yan, this is Mr. Gao from the duty office. We have a little girl with a facial injury."

"Her family is adamant that you, Mr. Yan, as the center’s most skilled surgeon, come and treat her."

Mr. Gao then added in a hushed voice, "Mr. Yan, they say the little girl is the niece of the city’s deputy director of finance."

"The whole family has a major attitude."

"Mr. Yan..."

Hearing this only made Yan Feifan more annoyed. "Is it serious?" he asked.

"The injuries aren’t that serious! But, Mr. Yan, they’re insisting..."

"I’m busy. I’m not going!"
