Overpowered Resident Doctor

Chapter 566 - 565: No Miracle

Chapter 566: Chapter 565: No Miracle

After dinner, Duan Yu took Yan Feifan back to his five-star hotel in the West District to rest.

After reminding Yan Feifan not to go out for the night, Duan Yu left the hotel to handle his transfer paperwork.

Yan Feifan was exhausted from running around all day.

After washing up and taking a shower, he had a brief chat on the phone with his sister in Binhai and Su Ye before going to bed.

What Yan Feifan didn’t know was that an hour or two after he fell asleep, a desperate, world-wide search for him had begun.

Shortly after eleven that night, in the ICU at Union Medical College Hospital, the Mo family’s child’s condition began to worsen. He had to be intubated and put on a ventilator to help him breathe.

The doctor on duty told the Mo Family that the child would very likely not make it through the night and that they should prepare for the worst.

The child’s mother broke down on the spot, demanding they perform surgery.

The doctor on duty had no choice but to explain to the Mo Family that as for the surgical plan—the one involving a puncture to adjust the pins in the child’s brain—only Mr. Yan would dare attempt it, and only he could perform it.

But Mr. Yan wasn’t here.

Furthermore, the child’s condition had deteriorated due to cerebral edema. He was no longer a candidate for surgery, and all they could do was leave it to fate.

But the child’s mother, clinging to her last shred of hope, refused to give up. "That young Mr. Yan dared to do it! He can do the surgery! He must have a way to save my child! Get him here! Quick, get him here!"

The doctor on duty explained that Mr. Yan didn’t work at their hospital. He didn’t have his contact information and was powerless to help.

The mother then turned to Lu Yao, who had been patiently staying with them at the hospital.

But Lu Yao shook his head, refusing.

He bluntly told the Mo Family that Yan Feifan wasn’t some minor doctor who could be summoned at will. Every time they asked for his help, it used up some of the limited goodwill between them.

"Besides," he added, "given the child’s current condition, it’s best to let nature take its course."

"I was wrong! It was my fault!"

The child’s mother said through her tears, "I saw how young he was and just thought he was being reckless and arrogant."

"But the more I think about it, the more I understand..."

"If he didn’t have any real skill, why would someone with Dr. Hou’s status and standing treat him so warmly?"

"Lu Yao, I was wrong. Please, for Ruxuan’s sake, contact Mr. Yan again. Please ask him to come."

The mother pleaded, "Lu Yao, when you and Ruxuan get married, Xiaobao will be your nephew."

"I’m begging you!"

As the entire Mo Family turned their pleading eyes on him, Lu Yao spoke slowly. "It’s not that I’m being heartless or unwilling to help."

"Mr. Yan is in Jingcheng because he has three surgeries scheduled for tomorrow at Baining Hospital—for spinal and brain tumors."

"To ensure those surgeries go smoothly, he won’t come."

Hearing this, however, the mother’s hope suddenly soared. This was proof that Yan Feifan truly had incredible skills.

"But Xiaobao is only five and a half! Don’t they always say ’women and children first’ in a crisis?"

The mother thought of something else and quickly added, "We won’t let Mr. Yan come for nothing this time."

"Money... money..."

"Lu Yao, tell Mr. Yan that if he can save my Xiaobao, I’ll give him a million! A million!"

Lu Yao hesitated for a moment before saying, "A while ago, the Lu Family offered Mr. Yan a fee of ten million to operate."

Amid the stunned silence, Lu Yao continued, "Later, I presented him with a check for ten million."

"He refused it. Didn’t take it."

Lu Yao looked at the child’s grandfather. "Sir, this isn’t about money."

"Mr. Yan is a doctor whom our Lu Family is trying hard to build a good relationship with. Calling him over last time already used up some of that goodwill."

"I really can’t make another call."

The Mo family patriarch felt a headache coming on. This was an absolute mess.

He said with a hint of blame in his voice, "Lu Yao, if Mr. Yan is this skilled and this important... you should have told us all this before he came last time."

Mo Ruxuan spoke up in Lu Yao’s defense. "Dad, you can’t blame Lu Yao. He made it perfectly clear before that this Mr. Yan is a genius surgeon and our best hope for saving Xiaobao."

"It’s just..."

Mo Ruxuan glanced at her sister-in-law, whose eyes were brimming with tears. Her heart softened, and she changed her tune. "Let’s not make things difficult for Lu Yao."

"Let’s try to use our own connections, our friends and family, and see if we can get Mr. Yan to come back..."

And so, the nearly ten members of the Mo Family waiting at the hospital began pulling every string they had, calling everyone they knew and asking for favors.

Dr. Hou Hancheng, who had gone home to rest, was also woken by a call.

However, he tactfully explained over the phone that given the child’s current condition, it would be of little use to ask Mr. Yan to come, so it was best not to disturb him.

Yu Youhai, the vice president of Baining Hospital, was also eventually reached. The moment he heard they wanted Yan Feifan for a late-night emergency, he refused outright.

Even Liu Jin, all the way in Binhai at the Bin University Affiliated Hospital, was contacted through intermediaries, only to give a polite refusal...

Yan Feifan, of course, had no idea that people were frantically searching for him.

He slept soundly until dawn. After getting up, washing his face, and doing a light workout, he was greeted by the arrival of Duan Yu.

"Is all the paperwork done? Did your superiors approve you to carry a gun?"

Duan Yu shook his head. "No. Just as I expected, my superior said the risk level you’re facing isn’t high enough to warrant armed protection."

Yan Feifan said, a little disappointed, "Some of the more extreme attacks from disgruntled patients can be very dangerous."

"Besides, don’t they say you need to keep a gun on you to keep your hand in? If you go too long without handling one, won’t your aim get rusty?"

"It’s just like with us surgeons. If we stay out of the operating room for too long, our skills get rusty and deteriorate."

Duan Yu just smiled. "You don’t need to worry about that."

"I can go to the firing range at the armed police garrison in Binhai to practice on my own time."

Yan Feifan said eagerly, "Hey, when you do, can you take me with you? I’d love to try some live-fire target practice, just for the thrill of it."

Before the other man could respond, he caught himself.

’The recoil on a gun is too strong,’ he thought. ’It would be terrible if I injured my hands.’

Yan Feifan wiggled the fingers of both hands with incredible dexterity and said smugly, "These hands don’t just belong to me anymore. I have to take very good care of them."

’Maybe I should take out a hundred-million-dollar insurance policy on them someday?’

Duan Yu resisted the urge to roll his eyes. "It’s time for breakfast."

"From today on, my living expenses and my salary will all have to be provided by you, oh great doctor."

Yan Feifan asked curiously, "Duan Yu, you’re still officially in the military, right? Does that mean you’re collecting two salaries now?"

"So, how much does the military pay you a month?"

Duan Yu shut him down with a single word: "Classified."

As the two ate breakfast in the hotel’s buffet restaurant, Duan Yu told Yan Feifan that Yu Yuan Workshop’s event—the one where customers could "test their eye" to buy high-end jadeite at a tenth of its price—had been officially classified as illegal gambling.

He added that the owner of Yu Yuan Workshop was also found to be guilty of tax evasion, as well as the illegal possession and sale of national artifacts.

If the investigation dug any deeper, they would likely uncover even more illegal activities.

But based on these crimes alone, he was looking at a minimum of three to five years in prison.

Yan Feifan was quite satisfied with this outcome.

A short while later, Zeng Ni arrived at the buffet restaurant with Xu Yanhai, Sun Xuenong, and Shang Xiaorong.

"Feifan, I heard from Lu Yao... that child passed away a little after four this morning."

"Miracles are few and far between in this world," Yan Feifan lamented, then asked, "Have you all eaten breakfast yet?"

"If you haven’t, sit down and have something with us."
